Sleeping Dogs follows undercover detective Wei Shen through Hong Kong’s criminal world. Its open-world crime setup, vehicles and street races make it a natural choice if you want a city-based action story; its martial-arts combat gives it a different rhythm from GTA’s emphasis on gunplay. Watch Dogs 2: a modern city with hacking at the center
Choose Watch Dogs 2 if the appeal is driving around a contemporary city, taking on missions and using the environment in a new way. Mafia: Definitive Edition: a gangster story over freeform mayhem

When you want a different kind of open-world freedom
Cyberpunk 2077: crime in a science-fiction RPG city
Cyberpunk 2077 suits players who want a crime-saturated metropolis but are happy to trade contemporary realism for science fiction and role-playing. GameGeeker describes Night City, a mercenary story, choices, gunplay and cybernetic upgrades. Yakuza 0: smaller districts with plenty to do
Yakuza 0 trades a vast, free-roaming city for dense districts in Tokyo and Osaka, brawling, substories and minigames. It is worth considering if you want a crime story and a lot of side activities in a compact setting. What is known about Dan Houser’s A Better Paradise game?
Smilegate announced on August 7, 2025, that it would globally publish an AAA open-world science-fiction action-adventure set in A Better Paradise, with development in its early stages. The announcement says Houser would write and creatively direct the game alongside Lazlow and Michael Unsworth. It does not give a release date or establish that the game is available to play. The announcement also described an A Better Paradise novelization as due in October 2025; its current availability is not established here. See Smilegate’s announcement.

That project is separate from Grand Theft Auto VI. Rockstar’s official page describes Jason and Lucia in Vice City and a criminal conspiracy across Leonida. Its news feed included 2026 updates, but that description alone is not a release-date confirmation: Rockstar’s GTA VI page.

- Start with Sleeping Dogs if you want the strongest mix here of crime story, city driving and physical action.
- Pick Watch Dogs 2 for contemporary-city missions built around hacking, or Mafia: Definitive Edition for a more directed gangster narrative.
- Choose Cyberpunk 2077 for an RPG city, Saints Row IV for comic-book excess, or Just Cause 4 Reloaded for traversal and destruction.
