If a Windows 11 game keeps losing focus, first check whether you’re seeing a notification banner or the game is actually being pushed out of the foreground. Quieting notifications can stop banners, but it will not identify another app that takes keyboard input. Work through the checks below one at a time so you can connect the interruption to the app or setting active when it happens.
Is it a notification, or is the game really losing focus?
A banner can appear over a game without the game window losing keyboard focus. True focus loss means the game stops receiving your keyboard input; it may also minimize, reveal the desktop or taskbar, or be replaced by another window.
Microsoft Learn explains the distinction: “Only one window at a time can receive keyboard input. The window that receives input is said to have the keyboard focus.” Microsoft Learn: About Keyboard Input
- Likely notification: a banner or alert appears, but the game remains visible and continues responding to input.
- Likely focus change: input stops going to the game, the game minimizes, or another window appears in front.
At the next interruption, note exactly what appeared or changed. If another window flashes, record its name if you can. This observation determines which troubleshooting branch to follow.

If banners are interrupting play, adjust notification settings
Windows Focus and Do Not Disturb can quiet notifications, sounds, and alerts. Microsoft describes Focus this way: “Focus works by temporarily blocking notifications, sounds, and alerts from apps and contacts.” Microsoft Support: Stay focused with Focus in Windows
- Open Settings > System > Notifications.
- Review notification settings and the Do Not Disturb automatic rules. Enable the rules for playing a game or using a full-screen app if they suit your needs.
- Adjust notifications for the specific app, and review which notifications are allowed as priority notifications.
- Return to the game and check whether the interruption still occurs.
Windows labels can vary by build. These settings suppress notification interruptions; if the game still stops receiving input or another window takes over, continue with the focus-loss checks.

If the game truly loses focus, isolate background apps and overlays
There is no single confirmed cause for every case of games randomly losing focus or apparently alt-tabbing. A background utility or overlay is worth checking, but its presence alone does not prove it caused the interruption. Close likely candidates one at a time, then play until you can tell whether the symptom returns.
- Close one recently active app, launcher, chat app, utility, or overlay that could appear over the game.
- Reopen or return to the game and try to reproduce the interruption.
- If the problem stops, reopen that app and repeat the check to see whether the symptom returns. If it continues, leave that app closed for now and test the next candidate.
- Record which app was open or active when the game lost focus. Avoid disabling many unrelated settings at once; changing one variable at a time makes the result more useful.
Windows has background-permission controls for supported apps, but Microsoft notes that desktop apps manage background behavior through their own settings. Turning off a Windows background permission does not necessarily disable every desktop utility, launcher, or overlay. Microsoft Support: Manage background activity for apps in Windows

Use a clean boot as a diagnostic test
A Microsoft Q&A community discussion suggests a clean boot as a way to test whether background software is involved. This is community troubleshooting advice, not a guaranteed fix. If you try it, use Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions and restore normal startup settings afterward; the goal is to narrow down which background service or app matters, not to leave the system permanently stripped of its usual startup items. Treat registry advice as an advanced, unconfirmed lead
A reply in a Microsoft Q&A thread dated September 8, 2025, suggests checking the current user’s ForegroundLockTimeout registry value and restoring it to 200000 if it is zero. This is an independent advisor’s suggestion, not an official Microsoft fix, and the thread does not establish that the value caused the reported issue. Microsoft Q&A thread, September 8, 2025

Do not change the registry just because a game loses focus. Registry edits can affect Windows behavior; before making one, back up the relevant data and make sure you understand how to restore it. Prefer the notification and app-isolation checks first.

If the problem is limited to one windowed or borderless game
Windows provides per-app graphics options for windowed games. Microsoft documents these as graphics and presentation settings, not as a fix for a game losing foreground focus. If you test them, change only one option at a time and restart the game as directed so you can tell whether it changes the behavior. Microsoft Support: Optimizations for windowed games in Windows 11
