Game Server Location: What Matters for Multiplayer Responsiveness

A nearby game server is often faster, but the best region is the one with the lowest stable in-game latency—not necessarily the shortest distance.

Usually, a nearer game server means lower latency, but distance alone does not determine how responsive a multiplayer match feels. Internet routing, congestion, packet loss, jitter, server workload and a game’s networking design all matter. Choose the region that delivers the lowest stable in-game latency—not simply the one closest on a map.

What server location changes

Latency, often shown as ping, is the round-trip time for data to travel between your device and the game server. Riot Games Support defines it as the time for packets to go from your computer to Riot’s servers and back, measured in milliseconds. Because packets must travel both ways, a shorter physical distance often helps. Riot says distance is the largest contributor to latency when a connection is working normally. Riot’s connection guide explains those terms for League of Legends.

But internet traffic does not travel in a straight line. Packets pass through your home network, your ISP, other network providers and the game operator’s network. The actual path depends on routing and on how those networks connect to one another, including through peering. Riot’s account of its own network describes how its backbone and peering can influence routes, while noting that ISP participation affects the result. Riot’s network engineering article describes that arrangement.

So a server that looks farther away may have a cleaner or less congested route than a geographically closer one. A 2022 network-measurement study found examples where a closer route had substantially higher latency, and measured differences among ISPs connecting to game servers. One comparison in its sample associated a closer prefix with about 100 ms more latency; another showed a 120 ms difference. Those are results for particular routes and sampled networks, not universal predictions for players elsewhere. The PAM 2022 study provides the measurement context.

Why low average ping can still feel bad

A low average ping is only part of connection quality. Jitter is variation in latency over time; packet loss means packets fail to reach the player or server. Either can make play feel uneven, even if the average ping looks acceptable. Riot’s support guide also flags packet buffering as a potential connection issue. These measures describe stability, not just how long a typical round trip takes.

Other causes can sit outside server distance: a busy server, a congested ISP route, an unstable Wi-Fi link, or software and equipment on your side. Riot groups possible connection trouble into its service, the player’s ISP, and the player’s software, environment or equipment. A server’s location cannot by itself identify which part is responsible.

How much latency a game can tolerate

There is no single ping threshold that makes every multiplayer game feel good or bad. Timing-sensitive games can expose delay more readily than slower games, and the game’s netcode changes how delayed information is handled.

Riot’s 2021 engineering comparison described League of Legends as still playable around 60 ms average latency, while saying more than 60 ms in VALORANT would be rough. Those are Riot’s examples for two different games, not a general rule or a promise about every player’s experience. Riot’s VALORANT netcode article also explains that the world players see is slightly out of date and that server-side rewind helps evaluate hit registration. Such techniques can mitigate some effects of delay; they do not remove network travel time.

In a 2020 article, Riot stated a development goal of achieving 35 ms ping for 70% of the VALORANT player base. That was a goal, not evidence that it was later achieved or a current service guarantee. Riot’s 128-tick server article gives the original context.

How to choose between available regions

When a game lets you select a region, compare the connection from your own setup to the actual game service. A generic speed test or ping to a nearby website does not establish the route or latency to that game’s server.

  • In-game ping: Compare the value shown by the game for each available region.
  • Stability: Look for latency spikes, jitter or packet loss, not only the average.
  • Match access: Consider whether another region affects matchmaking availability or who you can play with.
  • Game type: Give more weight to responsiveness in timing-heavy games; do not assume another game has the same tolerance.

Keep the comparison consistent: use the same device, local connection and measurement conditions, and compare across more than one match. A single result may reflect temporary congestion or a service issue rather than a region’s usual performance.

How to tell whether location is the problem

  1. Check the game’s own network indicators. Compare in-game ping across regions and note whether it is consistently high or fluctuates during matches.
  2. Look for loss or jitter indicators. If the game exposes them, check whether they coincide with the lag you notice. A stable average ping does not rule out either problem.
  3. Check service status. For League of Legends, Riot’s support guide points players to regional service status and a Lag Report based on recent matches. The report can help distinguish a recurring connection pattern from a one-off impression; it is specific to League.
  4. Test the local connection. If Wi-Fi instability is suspected, try a wired connection. Riot lists switching to wired as one possible troubleshooting step. An Ethernet cable can improve the device-to-router link, but it cannot shorten the route from your home to a distant server.

Do not assume that a VPN, DNS change or network utility will lower game ping. The sources cited here do not establish a general benefit from those interventions; compare measured in-game results rather than relying on a product’s promise.
