There is no established, independent head-to-head test showing that IPS or OLED is universally better for a Game Boy Color. The choice depends on the exact kit: the listed 2.45-inch Hispeedido IPS kit is aimed at an original-size display and a simpler installation, while Hispeedido’s laminated AMOLED kit offers a larger display and more visual effects but requires soldering and has stricter shell-fit guidance. Here, “OLED” refers to that specific AMOLED offering; the labels IPS and OLED do not describe one standard kit each.

Which upgrade should you choose?
Choose the listed IPS kit for original-size framing and a less involved install
If keeping the original display size matters most, the 2.45-inch Hispeedido IPS listing explicitly describes its screen as matching the original size. Its stated no-solder, no-shell-trim installation is attractive if you want to avoid those steps, but do not assume it is guaranteed to fit without any modification: the listing warns that cartridge pins may need trimming. Check its current product details and warnings before buying.

Choose the listed AMOLED kit for a larger image and more effects
If you want a larger display area and options such as frame blending or retro pixel effects, the laminated Hispeedido AMOLED kit lists those features. Its stated 25% increase in display area is the vendor’s specification for this kit, not proof that all AMOLED upgrades are larger. This option makes more sense if you are comfortable soldering one wire and can use a recommended laminated shell or accept that a different shell may need modification. See the AMOLED listing’s shell guidance.

Does IPS or OLED drain more battery?
The available listings do not provide comparable runtime measurements for these two kits, so there is no supported battery-life winner. A 2024 Retrolize comparison says IPS is more power-efficient, but that general editorial claim is not a test of these current GBC kits. It should not be used to predict how long either one will run in your console. Battery drain can only be compared responsibly with measurements for the specific kits under comparable conditions.
#1 Best Overall
- 2.45" IPS LCD screen (original sized) with 9:1 pixel ratio. The display is brighter, clearer, and has a better viewing angle than the original screen.
- Soldering is optional with integrated touch sensor controls and On Screen Display (OSD). Soldering option for button controls
- 15 Brightness Levels. 8 Color Palette Opions. 4 Retro Pixel Effects. Frame Blending Option
- The installation process takes less than 20 minutes. No trimming required for your shell and the new screen will work seamlessly with your original Game Boy Color.
Does OLED look better than IPS?
There is no independent, attributable comparison here establishing which named kit has more accurate colors, better contrast in actual GBC use, or longer panel life. Color modes, brightness steps and retro effects are listed features; they do not establish color accuracy or overall image quality. Choose based on the size and image options you prefer rather than treating the technology label as a guarantee of a particular look.
The same caution applies to lifespan claims. Retrolize’s 2024 article gives approximate IPS and OLED panel-life figures, but the product listings do not corroborate those numbers for the kits discussed here. They are not a sound basis for predicting either kit’s service life.

Check fit and installation before ordering
- Identify the exact kit and revision. Confirm whether the listing is for the 2.45-inch IPS LCD or laminated AMOLED model; “IPS” and “OLED” alone do not specify dimensions, controls or installation requirements.
- Check the shell and clearance. For the AMOLED kit, follow its recommendation for Hispeedido or FunnyPlaying laminated shells; other shells may need modification. For the IPS kit, account for the warning that cartridge-pin trimming may be needed, even though the listing says shell trimming is not required.
- Read the guide for that exact kit. Installation steps vary. For example, the ConsoleMods FunnyPlaying IPS guide covers a different kit and includes steps that should not be generalized to every IPS installation.
- Test before final assembly. Follow the seller’s instructions to check the display before committing to adhesive or completing the build. Handle the panel and ribbon gently; the IPS listing warns that pressure or dropping can break the LCD.
