Yes, a Galaxy Tab S12 may replace a Windows laptop for browser-centered work, notes, ordinary documents and video calls—but only if the Android versions of your essential apps and your employer’s tools meet your needs. It is not a Windows PC in tablet form. Check your software, peripherals and preferred multitasking setup before relying on it for work. Samsung announced the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra and Tab S12+ on September 30, 2026; the reviewed Samsung DeX compatibility list does not yet name either S12 model.
What the Galaxy Tab S12 models offer for work
Samsung announced the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra and Galaxy Tab S12+ on September 30, 2026. The Ultra has a 14.6-inch display, and Samsung says both models include an S Pen. The company also identifies the Pro Keyboard and Book Cover Keyboard Slim as accessories. Those features make the S12 relevant to people who want a large screen, handwritten notes or a keyboard-based tablet setup; they do not establish that it can run a Windows workflow.

A Galaxy Tab S12 is a more plausible laptop substitute when most work happens in a browser or familiar Android apps. Typical examples include email, web research, video calls, note-taking, annotation and ordinary documents. Tom’s Guide identifies these as potential laptop-replacement tasks, while emphasizing that app versions and DeX or keyboard limitations matter.

- Notes and markup: The included S Pen is relevant if handwriting, annotation or precise editing is part of your work.
- Documents: Basic document creation and editing may be practical when the Android app supports the features and file formats you actually use.
These are conditional use cases, not a guarantee that every app, file or employer process will work. Tom’s Guide’s Samsung tablet guide likewise advises checking the Android app versions and accepting tablet-style productivity trade-offs.
What DeX changes—and what it does not
Samsung describes DeX as a desktop-like environment for compatible Galaxy devices. It can present apps in a more desktop-style interface, including on an external display, while the device continues to run apps. That can make windowed work feel more familiar, but it does not turn Android into Windows or provide compatibility with Windows-only desktop applications.

There is an important model-specific caveat: Samsung’s reviewed US DeX FAQ lists Galaxy Tab S4 through Tab S11 families, but not the newly announced Tab S12 models. That means S12 support is unconfirmed in that list, not proven absent. Check Samsung’s current DeX support FAQ and DeX overview for an updated answer before purchase or deployment.
When a Windows laptop is the safer choice
A Windows laptop is the more dependable choice if your job depends on desktop programs or tools that are not available or sufficiently capable on Android. The same applies when your employer requires Windows management or security tools, a specialized plugin, or peripherals that assume a Windows computer. DeX’s desktop-like presentation does not remove those compatibility constraints.

Multitasking is another practical dividing line. A tablet can be suitable for a few concurrent browser, communication and document tasks, but a workflow built around complex desktop window management or specialized software may be awkward or unsupported. The right test is not whether the interface looks like a desktop; it is whether your required apps and daily process work on the device.

| Decision point | A Tab S12 setup is more plausible when… | A Windows laptop is more plausible when… |
|---|---|---|
| Required apps | The Android versions provide the features you need. | Your work requires Windows-only desktop apps or specific plugins. |
| Multitasking | Your work centers on relatively light browser, communication and document tasks. | You rely on complex desktop window management or specialized tools. |
| Typing and input | You are comfortable using a separate keyboard accessory when needed. | An integrated laptop keyboard and trackpad are important to your routine. |
| Handwritten work | Taking notes, annotating or using a stylus adds value to your work. | Pen input is unimportant and conventional laptop input is preferable. |
| Work environment | Mobile, touch and tablet use suit your day. | Your employer’s tools or required peripherals assume Windows. |
| Total setup cost | The tablet plus a suitable keyboard and any necessary services remains competitive for you. | Adding accessories and services would erase the tablet’s cost or portability advantage. |
These are practical decision criteria based on the announced configuration and the distinction between Android/DeX and Windows; they are not a claim that one device wins for every worker.
Quick Recap
Check your actual work before switching
- List the apps you must use. For each one, confirm that its Android version supports the features your work depends on; do not assume that an app with the same name behaves like its Windows desktop version.
- Check file formats and handoffs. Test the documents you receive and send, including any features or formatting your colleagues require.
- Ask about employer requirements. Confirm whether company management, security or access tools require Windows, and whether your employer supports Android devices for your role.
- Map your peripherals. Identify any required keyboard, pointing device, external display or other work equipment, and verify compatibility for the exact S12 model and accessory.
- Try the real workflow. Recreate a typical work session with the apps, files and number of open tasks you use. If DeX is important, first confirm S12 compatibility in Samsung’s current support information.
- Compare the complete setup. Include the tablet, keyboard and any services you need, rather than comparing tablet-only and laptop-only prices.
