Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf your Galaxy SmartTag3 will not connect, register it through the SmartThings app—not your phone’s ordinary Bluetooth settings. First confirm your phone meets Samsung’s compatibility requirements, bring the tag close, and check whether its button responds. If it remains unresponsive, check its replaceable CR2032 battery before moving on to model-specific reset guidance or Samsung Support.
Why SmartTag3 may not appear in Bluetooth settings
SmartTag3 setup is handled through SmartThings. Samsung’s support guidance addresses the common case where a Galaxy SmartTag cannot be seen in a phone’s Bluetooth connection settings: use the SmartThings add-device prompts and follow any request to press the tag button, rather than trying to pair it like a headset. Menu wording can vary by app version and region. Samsung’s connection guidance and its Canadian SmartThings setup instructions describe this app-based approach.

Check compatibility before troubleshooting further
Samsung Canada lists SmartTag3 compatibility with Galaxy phones and tablets running Android 12 or later, and iOS devices running iOS 17 or later. The SmartThings app is required. Samsung also notes that feature availability differs by platform and that some functions require particular Galaxy hardware; a device meeting the basic OS requirement does not necessarily support every SmartTag3 feature. See the SmartTag3 specifications for the qualifications.

Work through the connection checks in order
- Update and open SmartThings. Make sure the app is installed and current, then use its add-device flow and follow the prompts shown on your screen.
- Bring the tag next to the phone. Press the SmartTag3 button and note whether it responds. Pairing nearby removes distance as an avoidable obstacle; a published maximum radio distance is not a reliable pairing distance indoors.
- Check the battery if the tag does not respond. SmartTag3 uses one replaceable CR2032. If SmartThings displays a battery level for the tag, check it there. An unresponsive tag makes a fresh, correctly installed battery a reasonable check, but replacement is not a guaranteed fix for every connection problem.
- Retry registration in SmartThings. Keep the phone and tag close, initiate the add-device prompts again, and press the button if the app asks.
- Use reset instructions cautiously. Samsung’s reset steps for SmartTag and SmartTag+ are not confirmed here as SmartTag3-specific. Check Samsung’s current SmartTag3 guidance before applying a procedure intended for those earlier models.
- Contact Samsung Support if it still fails. Persistent failure after these checks needs model-specific assistance; the available guidance does not establish a hardware diagnosis or repair threshold.
Replace the CR2032 safely
Samsung’s general SmartTag instructions say to open the cover at its notch with a finger or a flat object such as a credit card or guitar pick, remove the depleted cell, insert the new battery, and close the cover. Avoid forcing the housing or using a sharp metal tool. Samsung’s battery-replacement directions are for its SmartTag support guidance; consult the SmartTag3 instructions if the cover or procedure differs. Samsung’s SmartTag and SmartTag+ guide includes the general replacement steps.
#1 Best Overall
- Find your things with ease: The SmartThings Find app uses Bluetooth and ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to locate and keep track of your stuff
- Water and Dust Resistant: IP67 rating offers protection against dust and water immersion between 15 cm and 1 meter for up to 30 minutes
- Compatible with Galaxy Devices Only
Keep range specifications in perspective
Samsung Canada lists SmartTag3 maximum distances of up to 120 m for Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), 60 m for Bluetooth Channel Sounding, and 20 m for UWB. These refer to different capabilities, and Samsung’s product page does not make them guarantees of successful setup at those distances. They should not be used as a reason to troubleshoot pairing far from the phone; keep the tag close while registering it.
Samsung’s Canada page also lists battery life of up to 550 days, or up to 790 days in Power Saving Mode. Samsung qualifies these as tests using a pre-release device and the included CR2032; actual results vary with usage, environment, replacement-battery manufacturer, and other factors. These are not promised runtimes for every tag.

When a reset or handoff may be relevant
If you are moving a tag to another phone, Samsung’s general SmartTag/SmartTag+ guide advises removing it from SmartThings before connecting it to the new phone. That same guide describes a reset by removing the battery, holding the center button while reinserting the battery, and continuing to hold for five seconds. Because Samsung’s cited instructions are not SmartTag3-specific, confirm the current SmartTag3 procedure before trying that exact sequence. Samsung’s guide provides the generic directions; its applicability to SmartTag3 is not established here.

After confirming compatibility, trying the SmartThings flow nearby, and checking power, use Samsung’s current SmartTag3 support instructions or contact Samsung Support. The cited generic support guidance recommends contacting Samsung when troubleshooting does not resolve the issue, but it does not specify SmartTag3 repair eligibility, warranty outcomes, or a definitive cause for continued connection failure.
