Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf your Galaxy SmartTag will not pair, first add it through the SmartThings app—not your phone’s general Bluetooth menu. Update SmartThings and your phone, enable Bluetooth, check the tag’s battery, keep it close to the phone, and retry setup. If the tag is already listed but its location is stale, troubleshoot location updates separately: that can happen when the tag is out of Bluetooth range and no nearby Galaxy Find Network devices can relay its location.
First identify what is failing
The next step depends on whether the tag is missing during setup, listed but unresponsive, or paired but not showing a recent location.

| What you see | What to try first |
|---|---|
| The tag never appears in SmartThings | Use SmartThings’ add-device flow, enable Bluetooth, and keep the tag close to the phone. |
| Setup starts but will not finish | Update the app and phone, restart them, check the tag’s battery, and retry the in-app prompts. |
| The tag appears but does not respond | Check the battery; if needed, follow the reset instructions for your model and region. |
| The tag is paired but its map location is old | Check battery status and distinguish a stale network-assisted location from a pairing failure. |
Pair or add the tag through SmartThings
Samsung’s setup route is through SmartThings. If a detected-device prompt appears, follow it. Otherwise, open SmartThings and use its add-device flow, choose Samsung, then Galaxy SmartTag, and follow the prompts. When asked, press the tag’s center button; Samsung UK says the tag sounds to confirm pairing mode. Finish the app steps and check that the tag appears in SmartThings and SmartThings Find. See Samsung’s SmartTag setup and support instructions and Samsung UK’s SmartTag guide.
Do not make the phone’s generic Bluetooth settings your primary pairing route. Samsung’s SmartTag instructions specify SmartThings. Keep the tag near the phone while adding it, and remove obstacles where practical.
#1 Best Overall
- Find your things with ease: The SmartThings Find app uses Bluetooth and ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to locate and keep track of your stuff
- Water and Dust Resistant: IP67 rating offers protection against dust and water immersion between 15 cm and 1 meter for up to 30 minutes
- Compatible with Galaxy Devices Only
Clear common connection blockers
- Update the phone and app. Install available phone software updates and update SmartThings.
- Check Bluetooth and power. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled and the tag has power. If the button gets no response, check the battery before repeating setup.
- Bring the devices close together. Samsung’s general Bluetooth guide gives 30 feet as a broad guide, not a guaranteed SmartTag operating distance; actual range varies with the environment and device.
- Restart and retry. Close and reopen SmartThings, restart the phone, then retry the add-device flow.
Samsung notes that settings and menus can vary by device and software version. Its general troubleshooting steps are at Samsung’s Bluetooth connection troubleshooting page.
Check the battery before resetting
If SmartThings can communicate with the tag, check its battery level in the app. Samsung’s US instructions also explain how to open the cover and replace the battery. Samsung Gulf identifies a CR2032 coin cell in its SmartTag guidance, but confirm the requirement and polarity for your exact model before replacing it. A new battery is a reasonable remedy for a depleted or unresponsive tag, not a guaranteed fix for every pairing problem. See Samsung US battery instructions and Samsung Gulf’s setup guide.

Samsung says a flat object such as a guitar pick can be used at the cover notch. A special opening tool is not required by those instructions. Samsung Gulf’s 2026 guide estimates battery life of up to 300 days; that is Samsung’s estimate, not a promise for every tag or pattern of use. The estimate appears in its SmartTag finding guide.
Reset or move the tag to another phone
Try a reset only after checking the app, phone, Bluetooth, proximity, and battery. Procedures are not necessarily interchangeable across regions or models.

Samsung US manual reset
- Remove the cover and battery.
- Press and hold the tag’s center button.
- While continuing to hold the button, reinsert the battery.
- Keep holding for five seconds, then release.
Samsung cautions that if the tag sounds immediately after the battery is reinserted, repeat the reset steps. Follow Samsung US’s instructions for your model.
Before connecting the tag to another phone
Samsung US says to remove the tag from SmartThings before adding it to another phone. In SmartThings, find the tag in its location and room, touch and hold it, choose Edit, then Delete device and confirm. Add it again through SmartThings. Menu names may vary.

Samsung Canada’s regional procedure for an unresponsive tag
Samsung Canada gives a different procedure: remove the battery, wait about 20 minutes, install a new CR2032 battery, close the case, and allow two to three minutes for activation. Do not combine this with the US button-hold sequence as if they were one universal reset. Use the instructions for your model and region in Samsung Canada’s connection guide.

When pairing works but location does not update
A successful setup and a fresh map location are different things. Samsung says SmartTags can be found over Bluetooth Low Energy; outside direct range, location updates may depend on nearby Galaxy Find Network devices. A completely discharged battery or a lack of nearby participating devices can prevent a location update. A stale map location, by itself, does not prove the tag has become unpaired.
If SmartThings recognizes the tag, use SmartThings Find controls such as map view, Search Nearby, or Ring when available for your model and app version. Network-assisted finding is not guaranteed when no nearby Galaxy devices can relay the tag’s location. Samsung describes these limits in its SmartTag finding guide.
