The Galaxy S26 Ultra launched in the US at $1,299.99, $100 above the S22 Ultra’s $1,199.99 US launch price. That is a comparison of launch prices from 2026 and 2022—not a measure of what either phone costs today. The S26 Ultra brings a lighter build, a slightly larger display, updated camera hardware, faster advertised charging and a built-in Privacy Display; whether those changes justify an upgrade depends on current offers and what you value.
How do the Galaxy S22 Ultra and S26 Ultra compare?
The figures below come from Samsung’s US launch materials and March 2026 MSRP sheet. They describe listed specifications, not independent comparative testing. Prices are launch or published MSRP figures rather than current street prices.

Samsung measures display size diagonally across the full rectangle; rounded corners and the camera opening reduce the usable screen area. Peak-brightness figures are manufacturer specifications, not a matched test under identical conditions. Samsung’s S26 launch pages describe its 100x zoom as digital, with potential image deterioration beyond 10x; that label is not directly equivalent to the S22 Ultra’s 10x optical telephoto.

How much more does the S26 Ultra cost?
Using Samsung’s US launch starting prices, the difference is $100: $1,299.99 for the S26 Ultra versus $1,199.99 for the S22 Ultra. These figures span four product generations and do not show a present-day price gap. Samsung’s March 2026 MSRP sheet lists the unlocked S26 Ultra at $1,299.99 for 256GB and $1,499.99 for 512GB; the reviewed sheet does not state a verified 1TB price and notes that prices may change without notice.

To decide what you would pay now, compare current S26 offers with a specific S22 Ultra’s resale value or replacement cost. Match storage, condition, unlocked or carrier-locked status and warranty. A used or refurbished S22 price is not comparable to a new S26 price unless you account for condition and seller protections. Samsung’s initial S26 preorder offers and trade-in promotions were launch-era terms, not evidence of active offers today.
What changed most in the display and design?
The S26 Ultra is listed with a 6.9-inch display, compared with 6.8 inches on the S22 Ultra, while both support adaptive refresh rates from 1Hz to 120Hz. Samsung lists peak brightness of 2,600 nits for the S26 and up to 1,750 nits for the S22; these manufacturer figures do not establish how much brighter one looks in every setting.

In Samsung’s US specifications, the S26 Ultra is 15g lighter and 1mm thinner, while its listed width and height are slightly greater. That could matter if the S22 feels heavy in daily use, but listed dimensions alone cannot predict how either phone feels in an individual’s hand or case.
The S26 Ultra also adds a built-in Privacy Display. Samsung says visibility depends on viewing conditions and that image quality can change outside the intended viewing angle. It may be useful when checking sensitive content in public, but it does not replace sensible privacy practices.

Is the S26 Ultra camera better than the S22 Ultra camera?
The hardware changes are substantial on paper. The S26 Ultra has a 200MP main camera and 50MP ultrawide, against the S22 Ultra’s 108MP main camera and 12MP ultrawide. Both specifications list a 10MP 3x telephoto; the S22 adds a 10MP 10x optical telephoto, while the S26 has a 50MP 5x telephoto.
More megapixels do not by themselves prove that a camera takes better photos. Samsung attributes improved low-light capture on the S26 Ultra to wider apertures, but the cited material does not establish a matched independent photo test. Consider the kind of shots you take: the S22’s 10x optical telephoto is a distinct hardware advantage for its specified focal range, while the S26’s higher-resolution ultrawide and 5x telephoto represent newer camera hardware. Samsung describes zoom beyond 10x on the S26 as digital processing, so do not treat its 100x figure as 100x optical zoom.

What do battery and charging figures tell you?
Samsung lists a 5,000mAh battery for both phones. The S22 Ultra supports up to 45W wired charging and has 15W wireless charging listed. For the S26 Ultra, Samsung advertises up to 75% charge in 30 minutes with Super-Fast Charging 3.0. These are manufacturer figures; actual charging speed depends on conditions and accessories, and the cited specifications do not establish which phone lasts longer in a matched real-world battery test.

The S26 Ultra is the more compelling choice if its newer camera hardware, 15g-lighter listed weight, Privacy Display or advertised charging improvement addresses a real need—and the current price works for you. The S22 Ultra may remain the sensible choice if it meets your needs and replacing it would cost more than the benefits are worth. The launch-price difference alone cannot settle a current purchase decision.
Best Value
- 6.8" Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with 1–120 Hz adaptive refresh rate, up to ~1750 nits brightness, HDR10+ support, and ultra-smooth responsiveness for gaming and scrolling.
- Consider upgrading if the S22’s weight, camera capabilities or charging experience is a recurring frustration, or if you would use the S26’s Privacy Display.
- Consider keeping the S22 if it still does what you need and you have no specific reason to change. The cited launch sources do not establish its current software patch status or remaining support period, so check current official device-support information before making software longevity a deciding factor.
- Before buying, compare current prices for matching storage and verify condition, warranty and carrier status for any older or refurbished phone.
