If your Samsung Galaxy fingerprint recognition has suddenly become unreliable, check the screen protector, case, sensor and fingertip condition, charging setup, and temperature before deleting saved fingerprints. Those changes can affect recognition, and re-registering will not fix a physical obstruction or a finger that the sensor cannot read clearly.
Start with the sensor your Galaxy actually uses
Fingerprint sensor location and settings vary by Galaxy model and software version. Some phones have an in-display sensor; others use a side-mounted sensor. Follow guidance for the sensor on your device rather than assuming that every model has the same placement or menu. Samsung’s general fingerprint troubleshooting guidance covers these differences.

Check what changed just before recognition got worse
Screen protector or case
A newly installed, replaced, scratched, thick, textured, or uncertified screen protector can interfere with fingerprint recognition. A second protector layered over a preinstalled film is another thing to check. For a test, remove an add-on protector if you can do so safely, and take off the case if it touches or covers the sensor. If recognition improves, verify that any replacement protector is compatible with your exact Galaxy model and fingerprint sensor; compatibility is not universal. Samsung’s protective-film guidance warns that touch or fingerprint recognition may not work properly with some films. Samsung also recommends a compatible protector designed for the device in its Galaxy S26 guidance.

Sensor and fingertip condition
Wipe the sensor area gently with a clean, soft cloth, then make sure your fingertip is clean and dry. Samsung says very dry or chapped skin may not be recognized; if your finger is unusually dry, moisturizer may help. A wet finger can also be missed, so wait until it is dry before retrying. Dirt, scratches, scars, or wrinkles on the finger or around the sensing area may affect recognition.

Charging and temperature
Try again after moving the phone away from a wireless charger. Samsung notes that fingerprints may not be recognized while a device is charging wirelessly. Also test in a moderate-temperature environment: very hot or cold conditions can affect recognition.
Check whether the phone is scanning too often
If your device offers a Fingerprint always on setting and the problem involves unintended scans or repeated prompts, check whether it is enabled. Samsung includes this as a consideration in current US troubleshooting guidance, but it is not necessarily the cause of failed recognition. The setting and its location may differ by model and software.

When to improve accuracy or re-register
Try the physical and environmental checks first. If the sensor still misses your finger, use the fingerprint settings on your phone to follow its current on-screen instructions. Menu names and enrollment behavior vary by model and software, so use Samsung’s instructions for your version rather than relying on a menu path that may not match your device.

Improve accuracy is not available on every Galaxy. On Galaxy S26, Samsung’s instructions say to scan an already registered finger ten times using the feature. A separate Samsung support page limits availability to devices running Android 16 with One UI 8.5 or higher. Check your phone’s software and settings to see whether the option is present; do not assume the S26 procedure applies to another model.

Delete and add fingerprints again
If re-enrollment is needed, remove the saved fingerprint in your device’s fingerprint settings and register it again using the prompts shown on screen. During enrollment, vary the angle and position of your finger, cover the sensor as instructed, and avoid lifting or shifting too quickly. Adding another finger can be useful if you regularly unlock the phone with either hand. Samsung’s Android 16 and One UI 8 troubleshooting instructions describe a gentle, swipe-style enrollment process, so follow the guidance displayed for your specific software.

Contact Samsung support or arrange service if the display or sensor area is physically damaged, or if recognition remains unreliable after checking accessories, cleanliness, charging, and temperature and following the device’s enrollment steps. Samsung warns that damage or malfunction caused by uncertified accessories may require repair; whether a repair is covered depends on the circumstances.
