Gaffer is a free, open-source node-based application for VFX scene assembly, look development, lighting, rendering, compositing, and production automation. It connects scene data, shaders, renderers, and image operations in a graph; it is not intended to replace every stage of 3D production.
What Gaffer does
The Gaffer project describes the software as “a free, open-source, node-based VFX application that enables look developers, lighters, and compositors to easily build, tweak, iterate, and render scenes.” Its node graph lets artists assemble and adjust scenes non-destructively while a scene hierarchy presents the resulting scene data.

Gaffer supports shader authoring through renderer integrations and Open Shading Language (OSL), as well as extensible Python and C++ APIs. Where it fits in a VFX workflow
Gaffer is focused on look development, lighting, rendering, and VFX process automation. Modeling and animation can be created in another application and brought in as geometry or animation caches; Gaffer is therefore best understood as a scene and production workflow environment, not a general-purpose modeling and animation package.

A practical starter scene follows this pattern: load geometry, import textures, build and assign a shader, add a light, view the scene with an interactive renderer, and render an image. Platforms, requirements, and renderer integrations
At the time represented by the official download information, Gaffer offers Linux builds—most tested on AlmaLinux 9—and 64-bit Windows 10 and 11 builds. Linux requires glibc 2.28 or higher; CentOS 7 is not compatible. Windows installation requires the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable, and an Nvidia GPU is recommended. These are versions listed by the download page at the time of the cited information, not a guarantee of compatibility with every current release. Before choosing a setup, check that the renderer version already used by your studio appears on Gaffer’s current compatibility list. Third-party tools may also need environment configuration; for example, Arnold requires ARNOLD_ROOT to point to its installation. Who is likely to find it approachable
The Gaffer 1.5.1.0 guide assumes intermediate knowledge of VFX terminology and methods, plus at least basic familiarity with Linux and programming concepts. It is aimed at both enthusiasts and studios and includes user instructions, API information, architecture notes, and reference material. That makes Gaffer a more natural fit for people comfortable with technical production workflows than for someone seeking an all-in-one beginner 3D package.

The official material does not establish objective renderer speed rankings or benchmark results, so compatibility and pipeline needs are more defensible decision criteria than claims that one integration is universally faster or better.
