G-SYNC vs. FreeSync: Which Is Better for Gaming?

G-SYNC and FreeSync both support variable refresh rate, but neither is universally better. Choose by checking your GPU, monitor model, input, VRR range, and display features.

Neither G-SYNC nor FreeSync is universally better. Both use variable refresh rate (VRR) to coordinate a monitor’s refresh with the frames produced by a graphics card, helping reduce screen tearing and uneven motion. The better choice depends on your exact GPU, monitor, connection, and the display’s supported refresh range—not the badge by itself.

What G-SYNC and FreeSync do

A conventional display refreshes at a fixed rate, while a game may produce frames at changing rates. VRR lets a supported monitor adjust its refresh timing to the GPU’s frame output, which can make motion look more consistent and reduce tearing. NVIDIA and AMD both describe their technologies as VRR solutions; neither description establishes a universal performance advantage over the other. NVIDIA’s G-SYNC overview and AMD’s FreeSync overview explain their respective systems.

How the labels differ

NVIDIA G-SYNC

NVIDIA distinguishes G-SYNC monitors that incorporate G-SYNC processors from G-SYNC Compatible displays, which use VRR and have been validated by NVIDIA for use with G-SYNC. NVIDIA also lists G-SYNC ULTIMATE; features vary by model, so the label alone does not tell you every specification. Its product page describes the categories, while its support information explains compatibility distinctions.

AMD FreeSync

AMD describes FreeSync as an open ecosystem using industry-standard VRR protocols, including DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync and supported HDMI implementations. Its tiers are FreeSync, FreeSync Premium, and FreeSync Premium Pro. AMD requires low framerate compensation (LFC) for Premium and Premium Pro; LFC can duplicate frames when a game’s frame rate falls below the display’s minimum VRR rate. AMD also says FreeSync does not require licensing fees for display makers or a proprietary hardware module. Those are AMD’s descriptions of its ecosystem, not an independent cost or performance comparison. See AMD’s FreeSync information.

Does FreeSync work with NVIDIA graphics cards?

Sometimes. AMD says certain NVIDIA GeForce GPUs that support DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync are expected to work with FreeSync, but compatibility depends on the specific graphics card, monitor, connection, and configuration. Confirm support for the exact GPU and display with their manufacturers rather than assuming every GeForce card works with every FreeSync monitor. NVIDIA’s G-SYNC information and AMD’s FreeSync guidance are useful starting points.

How to choose a monitor for your setup

  1. Identify your GPU and output. Check the exact graphics card model and its VRR support, including which output you plan to use.
  2. Check the monitor’s exact model. Confirm its VRR certification or compatibility, resolution, refresh-rate range, HDR features, and any model-specific requirements. NVIDIA’s G-SYNC monitor directory provides model-level details, including input and VRR range for listed displays.
  3. Verify the connection. FreeSync can work over HDMI as well as DisplayPort, according to AMD, but the monitor and GPU must support the relevant mode over that particular input. Do not assume a feature available through one connection will also work through another.
  4. Compare the display as a whole. Consider resolution, refresh range, panel behavior, HDR implementation, and how the GPU performs in the games you play. The VRR brand does not settle those trade-offs.
  5. Enable and verify VRR after setup. For NVIDIA, open NVIDIA Control Panel and use Display > Set up G-SYNC when that option is available; confirm the intended display is enabled and configured. NVIDIA notes that options can vary by system configuration. See its setup guidance.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you

Vendor documentation establishes how AMD and NVIDIA describe their own technologies and compatibility guidance. It does not provide an independent side-by-side test proving that one is better for every gaming setup. AMD reported approximately 4,000 FreeSync-enabled displays as of November 2023; that is a dated AMD ecosystem figure, not a current count or a directly comparable market-share statistic. Check current product specifications and compatibility information for the models you are considering.
