“This application failed to start because fuusd.dll was not found.”
The fuusd.dll missing error points to a legacy Windows imaging component, not normally to Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET. The file is associated with Microsoft’s Still Image Architecture for scanners, digital cameras, and related imaging software.
The safest fix is to identify the program requesting fuusd.dll, repair Windows if its protected files are damaged, and reinstall the old camera, scanner, or imaging application if that software is the real requester.

Use this checklist before changing anything:
- The error appears when Windows starts: inspect the startup entry or old imaging software that launches with Windows.
- It appears when opening a scanner or camera program: repair or reinstall that program and its device driver.
- It began after antivirus quarantine or disk cleanup: check quarantine and repair Windows rather than downloading the DLL.
- It started after Windows Update: restart, check for more updates, and use Windows recovery options if the problem remains.
- The message names a path inside an application folder: the application may contain an outdated dependency. Reinstall that application.
- The message names
System32or another Windows folder: run DISM and SFC. - The error occurs on Windows 10 or Windows 11 with old software: compatibility trouble, an old driver, a migration issue, or a mistyped filename is more likely than a missing modern Windows package.
- The file exists in a temporary folder or an unexpected application directory: treat it cautiously and scan the file before attempting restoration.
Do not begin by copying fuusd.dll from another computer. The available evidence associates this file with Windows Me and Windows XP-era components, but there is no verified Microsoft standalone download package or confirmed current Windows 10/11 shipping status for it.
What is fuusd.dll
fuusd.dll is described as Still Image Devices DLL and is attributed to Microsoft Windows. Still Image Architecture, or STI, and Windows Image Acquisition, or WIA, are Windows technologies used by scanners, digital cameras, and other still-image devices.

Microsoft introduced WIA in the Windows Me and Windows XP era, building on STI. Microsoft’s WIA documentation describes Windows components such as sti.dll and wiaservc.dll, along with vendor-supplied user-mode device drivers. That means the Windows imaging framework and the device manufacturer’s driver are related, but they are not always the same thing.
Historical Windows file inventories list fuusd.dll among other imaging-related files. A secondary Windows XP system-file listing also records it under the dllcache folder and identifies Microsoft as the publisher. Those records establish its legacy Windows association, but they do not prove that every current Windows installation should contain the file.
The filename could also be wrong. Old software sometimes reports a dependency name incorrectly, or a message may have been copied by hand with a transcription error. Confirm the exact spelling and full path before attempting a targeted repair.
First: identify the program requesting the file
The program named in the error is usually more useful than the DLL name itself.
- Write down the complete error text.
- Record whether it appears during startup or only after opening a particular application.
- Note the application name and version if shown.
- Check whether a camera, scanner, multifunction printer, or older phone-imaging device is connected.
- Look for a full file path in the message.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the application associated with the error.
- If available, select its menu and choose Advanced options, then try Repair. Use Reset only if repair does not work and you are prepared to lose that app’s local settings.
If the error disappears when the application is uninstalled, you have identified the requester. Reinstall the program only from its original manufacturer or a trusted installation source. If the application is obsolete, replacing it with software that supports your current Windows version may be safer than forcing an old DLL into the system.
Fix 1: install Windows updates and restart
A pending update can leave Windows components in an incomplete state.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart when Windows asks.
- Test the program or device again.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart.
If Windows Update reports an error, do not repeatedly retry the same installation without checking the update troubleshooter and recovery options. A failed update can be relevant if fuusd.dll disappeared immediately afterward.

Fix 2: repair Windows with DISM and SFC

Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies when a valid source is available.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application or imaging device again.
A successful SFC result may say that Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and repaired them. If SFC repaired files, restart before testing.
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, install pending Windows updates and try again. If SFC cannot complete, restart and run it again. Repeated failures can point to component-store damage, filesystem problems, or a failing drive rather than to fuusd.dll alone.

Fix 3: repair or reinstall the application that requests the file
If only one old program reports the error, repairing Windows globally may not restore the program’s own files or dependencies.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for the application named in the error.
- Open its menu and select Uninstall, or use Advanced options > Repair when available.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the application again from its original vendor-provided installer.
- Launch it without connecting the camera or scanner first.
- Connect the device and test the imaging function.
If the application is no longer maintained, reinstalling it may reproduce the same error. In that case, use Windows compatibility settings:
- Right-click the application’s shortcut or executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version only if the program’s documentation requires it.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Test the program.
Compatibility mode cannot create missing Windows components. If the program still requests fuusd.dll, look for a newer version of the program or a replacement that supports your Windows release.

Fix 4: reinstall the camera or scanner driver
A WIA application can depend on a vendor driver even though WIA itself is a Windows technology. This is especially important when the error appears only after connecting a scanner, camera, or multifunction printer.
Remove the old device entry
- Disconnect the device.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Cameras, Imaging devices, Printers, Universal Serial Bus controllers, and Other devices as applicable.
- Find the device or an entry with a warning icon.
- Right-click it and select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you plan to install a fresh driver from the manufacturer.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
Install the correct driver
Obtain the driver from the camera, scanner, or printer manufacturer. Match the driver to your Windows version and system architecture. Do not assume that a 32-bit application needs a 32-bit Windows driver or that copying a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit Windows folder will solve the problem. The application, driver, and Windows imaging components must be compatible with one another.

Install the driver with the device disconnected unless the manufacturer’s instructions say otherwise. Restart after installation, reconnect the device, and test a scan or image transfer.
If Device Manager reinstalls a generic device but the old program still fails, the vendor’s full software package may be required. Reinstalling only a basic USB driver may not restore the old STI or WIA integration.

Finding the correct driver manually can involve checking the exact model, architecture, operating system, and release package. Fix 5: check antivirus quarantine and security history
If the problem began after a security scan, the file may have been quarantined. Do not disable antivirus protection to install a replacement DLL.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
fuusd.dll. - Check the original path, detection name, and action taken.
- Restore the file only if the original location and Windows installation are trustworthy and the security product identifies it as a false positive.
- Run DISM and SFC after restoration.
A file with the right name but an unexpected path, missing Microsoft signature, or altered metadata should not be restored blindly. Run a full scan. If malware is suspected, use Microsoft Defender Offline and then repair Windows.
Fix 6: inspect the file path and signature
The path determines whether you are dealing with a Windows component or an application file.

- A copy in an application folder may belong to old software.
- A copy in a temporary directory, download folder, or user profile is suspicious.
- Multiple copies in unrelated folders can indicate a bundled application, stale installation, or unauthorized replacement.
To inspect a file:
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Check the General tab for its location.
- Open Details and record the description and publisher information.
- Open Digital Signatures, when present, and inspect the signer.
- Do not replace or execute the file solely because its filename matches the error.
The known historical file records do not establish a current official version, supported 32-bit/64-bit pair, or verified hash for fuusd.dll. Treat version numbers and file sizes found on third-party download pages as unconfirmed.
Fix 7: use Windows recovery or a repair installation
If the error began immediately after an update, failed cleanup, or a system migration, use Windows recovery instead of manually replacing the DLL.
For Windows 11, when the option is available:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart and test the affected program.
This option reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings when supported by the installation.

You can also open Settings > System > Recovery and review System Restore or other recovery options. System Restore can roll back system files and settings without normally changing personal files. If Windows cannot repair itself, an in-place repair installation using original Windows installation media may be necessary. Back up important files first.

Windows may schedule the check for the next restart because the system drive is in use.
Do not use regsvr32 unless the vendor requires it
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It is used for registering certain COM or ActiveX components, but not every DLL is a registration target.
No authoritative Microsoft source confirms that fuusd.dll should be registered with regsvr32. Running it blindly can produce another error and distract from the real issue. WIA includes different component types, including drivers that are not necessarily COM registration targets.
Use regsvr32 only when the original application or device manufacturer explicitly documents that exact command for that exact component.
Why downloading fuusd.dll is unsafe
Avoid DLL download sites and random file-sharing pages. A downloaded DLL may be:
- the wrong Windows generation;
- the wrong architecture;
- incomplete or modified;
- unsigned;
- bundled with malware;
- incompatible with nearby system components;
- unable to fix the application or driver that actually caused the error.
Copying it into System32 can also create version conflicts and side-by-side dependency problems. Microsoft does not provide a verified standalone fuusd.dll download package in the available documentation. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows recovery, the original application installer, or the device manufacturer’s driver package instead.

Run DISM and SFC. If the error remains, identify the application that requested the file and repair or reinstall that application. Do not restore an unknown copy from a download site.
