Funimation is closed. Its website and streaming apps stopped operating on April 2, 2024, as Sony consolidated the service with Crunchyroll. Former subscribers generally moved to Crunchyroll, but account data, billing arrangements, catalog availability and Funimation Digital Copies did not carry over identically for everyone.
When did Funimation shut down?
Funimation’s website and apps officially ended service on April 2, 2024. This was a completed closure, not a future phase-out. The Funimation app for Nintendo Switch was also discontinued that day and became unavailable for new downloads, redownloads and use by existing users, according to Nintendo Support.

Why did Funimation close?
Sony’s Funimation Global Group completed its acquisition of Crunchyroll on August 9, 2021, as documented in Sony’s announcement. On March 1, 2022, Crunchyroll announced that Funimation, Wakanim and VRV content and services would be unified under the Crunchyroll brand.
#1 Best Overall
The business goal was a single anime subscription rather than two overlapping services. During the initial migration, Sony said more than 1,600 hours and 50 newly added titles had become available on Crunchyroll. That migration continued over time and culminated in Funimation’s platform closure.

What happened to Funimation subscribers?
Most Funimation subscriptions were transferred to Crunchyroll, and many former customers can sign in with the credentials associated with their Funimation account. The exact result depended on the country, subscription type, payment method and whether billing was handled directly or through a third party.
Check the Crunchyroll account first
- Go to Crunchyroll’s Premium page and sign in using the email and password linked to Funimation.
- Open the account or membership settings and verify the active plan, renewal date and payment method.
- If you used Apple, Google Play, Roku, Amazon or another intermediary, inspect that provider’s subscription screen as well. Cancellation and payment changes may need to be made there.
- Review your bank or app-store statements for duplicate Crunchyroll charges, especially if you already had a separate Crunchyroll account.
- If the account will not sign in or the billing history is wrong, contact Crunchyroll support rather than trying to recreate a Funimation subscription.
Some legacy plans were mapped to current Crunchyroll plans, potentially increasing the price. Roku Pay subscribers, for example, were moved to the Crunchyroll Fan plan under Crunchyroll’s transition guidance. Annual subscribers should ask support about cancellation or a refund for any remaining premium period; eligibility depends on the payment method and circumstances.
Can Funimation watch history and queues still be transferred?
Crunchyroll’s current support guidance says watch-history migration is no longer available. People who migrated or used their accounts during the transition may see different results from users attempting it after the shutdown. Do not assume an old Funimation queue or viewing history can still be recovered.

Former Funimation credentials may continue to work for some people who previously used them to access Crunchyroll. Crunchyroll says access for users who never used that sign-in method could eventually be discontinued, so create or confirm a working Crunchyroll login rather than relying on an old app.
The major exception: Funimation Digital Copies
Streaming access and purchased digital ownership were separate products. Crunchyroll’s official Funimation end-of-services guidance says it does not currently support Funimation Digital Copies.
As a result, digital copies associated with eligible Funimation DVD or Blu-ray purchases were not made available through Crunchyroll after the shutdown. A movie or series appearing in Crunchyroll’s streaming catalog does not restore a personal Funimation Digital Copy entitlement. This policy does not by itself decide broader legal ownership questions; it describes what the successor service supports.
Did the entire Funimation catalog move to Crunchyroll?
No complete, permanent transfer should be assumed. Crunchyroll and Sony described most content as migrating, but availability can differ by country and can change when licensing agreements expire or are renegotiated.

Rank #3
- Elfen Lied Complete Collection [Blu-Ray]
- A title may be available with subtitles but not a particular dub.
- One season may be present while another is missing.
- Audio, subtitle, censored or uncut versions can differ from the Funimation release.
- Home-video editions are not automatically represented by the streaming version.
Search for the specific show on Crunchyroll and inspect its season, audio and subtitle options. The presence of a series on Crunchyroll is not proof that every Funimation-era version migrated.
What happened to Funimation’s English dubs?
Bringing Funimation’s dubbed and subtitled anime into one service was a stated reason for the consolidation. Many dubs are available on Crunchyroll, but a show’s listing does not guarantee every Funimation-era dub, uncut edit, subtitle track or territory. Check the individual title page for available languages and seasons before subscribing for one particular series.
Crunchyroll prices: historical transition versus current U.S. plans
During the initial 2022 migration, Crunchyroll said U.S. ad-free prices remained $7.99 per month for Fan, $9.99 for Mega Fan and $14.99 for Ultimate Fan. Those are historical figures, not current prices.
Crunchyroll announced U.S. price increases in February 2026. For existing monthly subscribers, the new amount applied on the first billing date after March 4, 2026. The current U.S. Premium page listed the following prices when checked on August 18, 2026:
Rank #4
| Plan | Monthly price | Notable features |
|---|---|---|
| Fan | $9.99 | Ad-free library, one simultaneous stream and offline viewing. |
| Mega Fan | $13.99 | Four simultaneous streams, offline viewing, Game Vault and additional store benefits. |
| Ultimate Fan | $17.99 | Six simultaneous streams, offline viewing, Game Vault, Crunchyroll Manga, enhanced store benefits and annual swag-bag eligibility. |
Prices and benefits can vary by region, tax, billing platform, promotion and eligibility. The Premium page advertises a seven-day trial for eligible new subscribers; it renews automatically unless canceled.

Choose Crunchyroll Fan for basic single-viewer streaming
Fan is the straightforward option for one viewer who wants the consolidated ad-free anime library, simulcasts and offline viewing on supported devices.
Choose Mega Fan for households or frequent offline viewing
Mega Fan adds four simultaneous streams, offline viewing and Game Vault access, making it more suitable when several people watch at once.

Choose Ultimate Fan only for its specific extras
Ultimate Fan is aimed at viewers who value six streams, Crunchyroll Manga and the plan’s additional store and swag-bag benefits. It is not required to access the core service.
Other services, including Hulu and Netflix, may carry particular anime titles or exclusives, but their current prices and catalogs vary by country and should be checked separately. Individual digital purchases or physical discs remain options for title-specific ownership concerns; they do not recreate Funimation’s former Digital Copy system.
What former Funimation users should do now
- Sign in to Crunchyroll and confirm that the email, plan and renewal date are correct.
- Check Apple, Google Play, Roku, Amazon or another billing provider if that is where Funimation charged you.
- Look for duplicate recurring charges if you held both services.
- Search Crunchyroll for each essential series and verify seasons, dubs and subtitles.
- Do not expect watch-history migration to remain available.
- Do not treat a Crunchyroll stream as a replacement for a Funimation Digital Copy.
- Use Crunchyroll support for account access, billing, cancellation or annual-plan refund questions.
The Bottom Line
Funimation shut down on April 2, 2024. Crunchyroll is its direct streaming successor, but migration was not complete for every title or account feature: watch-history transfer is no longer available, and Funimation Digital Copies are not supported.
