The shortcut depends on your laptop’s operating system. On Windows, press PrtScn to copy the whole screen, or Windows+PrtScn to save it as an image. On a Mac, press Shift-Command-3. On a Chromebook, press Ctrl+Show windows. Ubuntu with GNOME commonly uses PrtScn, although KDE and other Linux desktops can assign different keys.
The destination matters: some shortcuts put the image on the clipboard, while others save a file automatically or open a capture toolbar.

There is no single laptop-wide key. The operating system, Linux desktop environment and the keyboard’s Fn layer determine the result.
How to take a full-screen screenshot on Windows
Copy the whole screen with PrtScn
Press PrtScn (also labeled PrtSc, Print Screen or a similar abbreviation). Windows captures the whole visible screen and copies the image to the clipboard. It does not necessarily create a file, so open Paint, an email, a document or a chat and press Ctrl+V to paste it. You can then save the pasted image in the format and folder you choose.

Save a file immediately with Windows+PrtScn
Press Windows+PrtScn to capture the full screen and save the image automatically. The usual location is PicturesScreenshots. Open File Explorer and choose Pictures, then Screenshots, if you need to find it.
Use Snipping Tool when you need a choice
Press Windows+Shift+S. The Snipping Tool capture bar lets you choose a rectangular area, freeform shape, specific window or full screen. After selecting a mode, follow the on-screen pointer instructions. This is preferable when “full screen” means one window or a precisely selected region rather than everything currently displayed.
Windows keyboard and multi-key problems
- On compact laptops, the Print Screen function may share a key with another command. Hold Fn while pressing the printed key, or try the manufacturer’s alternate Print Screen label.
- If PrtScn appears to do nothing, paste with Ctrl+V before pressing another key; the capture may be waiting in the clipboard.
- If you require a file without opening an editor, use Windows+PrtScn rather than plain PrtScn.
How to take a full-screen screenshot on a Mac
Capture the entire display
Press and release Shift-Command-3 together. macOS captures the entire screen. A thumbnail normally appears briefly in a corner; the image is then saved to the desktop unless you have changed the screenshot destination.
Choose a region or open controls
- Shift-Command-4: drag over the area you want to capture.
- Shift-Command-5: opens the screenshot and screen-recording controls, including full-screen, window and selected-area capture.
Use the thumbnail if you need to mark up or share the image immediately. If no thumbnail is visible, check the desktop after the shortcut and verify that the screenshot destination has not been changed in the screenshot controls.

Mac keyboards without the expected labels
Command is the key marked with the ⌘ symbol. On an external PC-style keyboard, the key mapped to Command can have a different label, so use the macOS keyboard mapping shown in System Settings when a three-key shortcut is not recognized.
How to take a full-screen screenshot on a Chromebook
Use the direct shortcut
Press Ctrl+Show windows. The Show windows key is usually marked by a rectangle with two vertical lines and sits along the top row. ChromeOS captures the screen and saves screenshots to Downloads by default.
Open the capture toolbar
Press Ctrl+Shift+Show windows. The capture toolbar offers full-screen, window and partial-area modes, plus screen recording controls on supported ChromeOS versions. Choose the full-screen icon when you want the whole display but still want the toolbar’s confirmation and destination options.
External-keyboard fallback
If an external keyboard has no Show windows key, Google documents Ctrl+Shift+F5 as the fallback. If the file is not in Downloads, open the Files app and check the screenshot location or the destination selected in the capture toolbar; ChromeOS allows the default location to be redirected.

How to take a full-screen screenshot on Linux
Ubuntu with GNOME
On Ubuntu’s GNOME desktop, PrtScn commonly captures the whole screen. Alt+PrtScn captures the active window, and Shift+PrtScn captures an area. The exact prompt, file location and editing options can vary with the Ubuntu release and screenshot utility.
KDE Plasma and other desktops
Linux does not have one universal shortcut because the desktop environment controls the Print Screen action. KDE Plasma commonly routes captures through Spectacle, while other environments can use a different utility or a custom binding. Search Keyboard Shortcuts or Screenshot in your desktop’s Settings when PrtScn does not produce the expected result.

When the Print Screen or Show windows key is missing
- Look for a shared key: manufacturers may print PrtScn in a smaller color or secondary legend. Hold Fn while pressing that key.
- Check Fn Lock: some laptops reverse whether the top-row key or the media command is primary. Toggle Fn Lock using the laptop’s documented key combination, then retry.
- Use the operating-system menu: Windows Snipping Tool, macOS screenshot controls and the ChromeOS capture toolbar avoid depending on a printed key.
- External keyboards differ: Chromebook users should use the documented Ctrl+Shift+F5 fallback when Show windows is absent. Linux users should assign a shortcut in the desktop’s keyboard settings.
Troubleshooting common screenshot failures
Windows screenshot disappeared
Plain PrtScn is clipboard-oriented. Paste immediately with Ctrl+V. If you need a persistent image, press Windows+PrtScn and inspect PicturesScreenshots.
Mac screenshot is not visible
Wait for the corner thumbnail to finish, then check the desktop. If your Mac uses a different destination, open Shift-Command-5 and inspect the screenshot options. Confirm that you released all three keys together rather than holding them while pressing another command.

Chromebook capture went to the wrong folder
Open the Files app and check Downloads, the ChromeOS default. The capture toolbar can redirect the save location, so review its destination setting if Downloads is empty.
Linux keys perform another action
Your desktop environment may have reassigned Print Screen. Open Settings, search for Keyboard Shortcuts or Screenshot, and inspect the binding. KDE users should also check Spectacle’s shortcut configuration.
The image shows a blank page or blocked web content
A local shortcut records exactly what is rendered on your display. A page that has not loaded, is covered by a consent dialog or is protected by a bot check will appear that way in the capture. For repeatable webpage images, an automated capture service can handle page preparation before rendering.

Does a full-screen shortcut capture the browser window only?
No. The whole-screen shortcuts capture the display as rendered, including other visible applications, desktop elements and any dialogs on top. Use a window or region mode when you need only the browser content.
Can I change where screenshots are saved?
The operating system or desktop utility controls the destination. ChromeOS exposes a location choice in its capture workflow; macOS and Windows provide destination behavior through their screenshot tools and settings.
