Identify what “frozen” means on your device
Before pressing buttons or changing settings, note whether the display is lit, whether you can see a cursor or error message, and whether physical buttons still respond. These clues help distinguish an unresponsive interface from a display problem or a Windows crash.

- Screen is on but touch or controls do not respond: Use the phone restart instructions below.
- Display is black or blank: On a Windows PC, check power, connections, graphics state, and display output.
- Windows shows a blue screen or stop code and restarts: Record the error text and follow the stop-code steps.

Restart a frozen phone
iPhone
Force-restart steps differ by iPhone model. For an iPhone with Face ID, press and quickly release the volume-up button, press and quickly release the volume-down button, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. Do not release the side button just because the screen goes dark.

For iPhone 7 or 7 Plus, Apple specifies holding the side button and volume-down button together. For iPhone 6s and earlier, hold the Home button and the side or top button together. Check Apple’s force-restart instructions for the exact model sequence.
If the iPhone still will not turn on, charge it and try again. If it remains unresponsive, Apple says service may be needed.

Android
If the screen is on but the phone is frozen, Google Android Help says to hold the power button for about 30 seconds to restart. Button behavior can vary on customized Android versions and between manufacturers; consult the maker’s instructions if the phone does not restart. If the phone restarts but freezes again, restart after each troubleshooting change. Check for Android updates in the phone’s normal settings and consider whether the issue began after installing or updating an app. Google cautions that reinstalling an app that caused a problem may bring the problem back. Fix a blank Windows screen
These checks apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11 blank-screen problems. Start with the checks that fit what is connected and visible; a blank display is not the same as a Windows stop-code crash.
- Check power and display connections. Confirm that the PC is on and that the monitor is powered. Reseat display cables and check the connection at both ends.
- Reset the graphics driver. Press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B. If Windows responds, you may hear a beep or see the display flicker.
- Check display output. Press Windows+P, then use the arrow keys and Enter to select an output mode. This is useful when Windows may be sending the picture to another display.
- Force a restart only if the display remains blank. Hold the power button for 20 seconds, then turn the PC back on.

Choose the path that matches whether the blank screen has a cursor, appears at sign-in, started after an update, or shows a blinking cursor: Troubleshoot black or blank screen errors in Windows.

Respond to recurring Windows stop-code restarts
A Windows stop code appears when the PC encounters an unexpected restart error. Microsoft says causes may include hardware, a driver, or software. Write down the full stop-code text before it disappears; it is useful diagnostic information rather than a generic blank-screen symptom.
- Think about whether the problem began after adding hardware or installing a driver or program.
- If you recently added hardware, disconnect or remove it and check whether the restart error returns.
- Use Safe Mode as an initial troubleshooting option if Windows can start there.
Follow Microsoft’s steps for Windows stop-code and blue-screen errors. Some recovery choices can result in data loss. Back up important files before using reset or other recovery options, and begin with the least disruptive step that fits the problem.

Reduce the chance of another freeze
No single maintenance routine is established here as a way to prevent freezes across every phone and computer. Keep prevention practical and tied to what changed:
- Install operating-system updates through the device’s normal settings.
- Note whether freezes started after a particular app, update, driver, or hardware change.
- On Android, investigate a recently installed or updated app if freezes recur; avoid reinstalling an app known to trigger the problem unless you are prepared for the issue to return.
- For model-specific button combinations or settings, use the device maker’s support instructions.
When to stop troubleshooting
Seek help from the manufacturer or an appropriate repair service if the phone will not turn on after charging and the model-specific restart steps, or if Windows continues to fail after the relevant basic checks and Safe Mode troubleshooting. A compatible charger and cable may help when a phone battery is depleted, but compatibility depends on the device; charging will not fix a software or display fault. Do not choose a reset casually: first protect files that matter, since some recovery options can erase data.
