Your first winter in Frostpunk is a balancing act: keep people warm, keep the generator supplied with coal, keep food coming, and build enough capacity to respond when conditions change. There is no universal opening sequence—scenario, difficulty, and your decisions affect what the city needs—so use the game’s status information to guide each choice rather than following fixed resource targets.
One availability caveat: Nintendo’s Brazil store listing gives 19 October 2026 as the Switch version’s release date, which is still in the future as of 7 October 2026. Check your own regional store for the current release date and availability. Nintendo’s Brazil listing describes a digital version compatible with Nintendo Switch 2 and playable in TV, tabletop, and handheld modes; it does not establish that a physical cartridge is available.

What should you prioritize when starting?
Think in terms of linked systems, not isolated buildings. The generator needs fuel to provide heat; people need food; workers and buildings affect production and consumption; and research can open up better options. A fix that helps one area may leave another short. The game’s premise is to build a city that can survive in a frozen world, using resources, laws, technology, and expeditions while making difficult decisions about the community. Nintendo’s game description outlines those core pressures.
- First, check what is failing now. Use the in-game heat information and building status to spot urgent problems.
- Then check what will run out next. Look at coal and food reserves alongside ongoing production and consumption.
- Build options for later. When your opening economy permits, establish research so you can respond to the shortage you actually face.
These are priorities, not a guaranteed build order. A difficult start or a different scenario can change which need deserves attention first.

How should you manage heat?
Heat is a survival need, not merely a comfort bonus. The generator is central to keeping the city functioning, but fuel and coverage both matter: a working generator does not help a building that is not adequately heated, and expanding heat without watching fuel can put pressure on your coal supply.
Check the game’s heat information and the status of important buildings as conditions change. Prioritize essential homes and workplaces, then expand coverage deliberately. A beginner guide recommends planning heat zones and avoiding waste from overlapping coverage, but that is advice—not a universal optimal layout. Verify the result in your own city’s interface rather than assuming that a visually close building is warm enough. The guide’s heat and layout advice is a useful prompt for what to inspect.
How do you keep coal and food from becoming emergencies?
Coal and food solve different problems, and a reserve alone is not a lasting plan. The generator consumes fuel while people need food, so monitor both stored amounts and the rate at which the city is making and using them. If a stockpile is rising, check whether production can keep up as more people or buildings put demands on it; if it is falling, identify the cause before spending resources elsewhere.

A beginner guide flags early coal management and food conversion as practical concerns, but the available advice does not establish a quantity that every player should hold or a fixed number of workers to assign. Use the in-game figures and your current shortage to decide what to adjust. The guide’s resource advice supports keeping both needs in view, not following a universal numerical target.
When should you establish a Workshop and research?
When your opening economy can support it, make a Workshop and begin research early enough to improve your choices. In the beginner guide’s account, the Workshop enables research, which can improve gathering or unlock buildings and upgrades. That makes research a way to address the needs you are seeing—not a reason to pursue a single technology regardless of the city’s condition.
Before choosing what to research, look at the constraint that is actually slowing you down. Consider what the technology may improve or unlock, what else its cost competes with, and whether the city can meet immediate survival needs while you wait for the benefit. The guide identifies research as useful but does not establish a mandatory first technology. Its research and Workshop guidance is best treated as a starting point for that decision.

How should you place buildings and check roads?
Plan placement around both connection and heat. The beginner guide notes that buildings need road connections, and recommends thinking ahead about heat coverage. After placing a building, inspect its connectivity and heat status in the interface instead of relying on how close it looks to a road or the generator. The guide’s layout advice is secondary guidance, not proof that one city plan is best.

But do not sacrifice an urgent need simply to preserve a tidy plan: check the actual status of the buildings and adapt the layout to the current scenario.

Learn the radial menus and city information panels instead of importing PC instructions by habit. In a 2019 article about the Console Edition, lead designer Kuba described a city arranged around a radial layout and an interface adapted to circular menus and building-category submenus. That supports learning the console menu structure, but it does not verify specific Nintendo Switch button names or inputs.

As Kuba put it, “Heat means survival so the generator is the life-saving heart of our society.” The 2019 Xbox Wire article discusses the Console Edition’s design; it should not be read as a Switch control guide. Use the controls and prompts shown in your own game rather than relying on keyboard shortcuts from PC guides.
How do decisions beyond the resource loop fit in?
Survival is not only a matter of production. Nintendo’s description also points to laws, expeditions, and the moral consequences of decisions. When weighing an option, ask what immediate need it addresses, what ongoing cost it creates, who benefits, whether it competes with a research opportunity, and how it may affect hope, discontent, or other social pressures. Those trade-offs are part of managing the city, not separate from keeping it alive.
