Frost is a free, MIT-licensed Linux icon theme by Sayantan, designed around vivid frosted-glass colors and crisp white symbols. Its creator says it covers 134 file types and includes artwork drawn specifically for small icon sizes. Frost’s documentation lists GNOME, KDE Plasma 6, and COSMIC support; installing it does not automatically make it your active theme.
What makes Frost different?
Sayantan describes Frost as a response to icon collections that felt incomplete or inconsistent in real file lists. That is the creator’s personal motivation, not a measured comparison of Linux themes.

The visual approach combines colored, glass-like backgrounds with white symbols. In the project’s design, colors suggest broad categories and symbols distinguish file families. The creator says Frost draws 134 file types, a project-published count rather than an independently audited total. Icons at 48 px and above receive small labels, according to the author.

Rather than simply shrinking larger images, the theme includes individually drawn 16, 22, and 24 px artwork, according to its author. That matters most in file managers or other views where icons are displayed at small sizes, though legibility will still depend on the desktop, display scaling, and chosen icon size.

More than file icons
The project README also describes folder and application icons, top-bar status icons, HiDPI assets, customizable color presets, and project-folder marks intended to indicate detected technology stacks. Frost says icons it has not redrawn fall back first to Papirus and then to Adwaita; the project says brand icons are left unchanged.
Does Frost support your Linux desktop?
The project documentation names GNOME, KDE Plasma, and COSMIC, and the author’s September 21, 2026 update specifically says Frost works with KDE Plasma 6 and COSMIC. These are the project’s compatibility claims; no independent compatibility testing is established here.
On GNOME, the project’s instructions direct users to select Frost in appearance settings. KDE Plasma and COSMIC also provide appearance settings for choosing an icon theme. Exact labels and locations can vary with desktop and release, so consult the project README for its current environment-specific paths.
Install Frost and select it
The project provides a shell installer, an optional --mime flag for developer-file type fixes, and an uninstall command. Review the script and project instructions before running a command from a project; the installer has not been independently executed or security-reviewed here.

Open Frost’s GitHub repository and review its installation instructions and installer script: Frost project on GitHub.
-
Use the installation command supplied by the project README. Its documentation says the theme is installed in your user-local icon directory and does not switch the active icon theme automatically.

If you want Frost’s optional per-user developer-file MIME fixes, follow the README’s instructions for the
--mimeoption. This add-on is optional; the project says it can be reversed.
The README also documents manual installation from an archive for users who prefer not to use the installer. Frost is distributed through GitHub, and the project points to a gnome-look.org listing. The current state and details of that listing have not been verified.
What the optional MIME fix is for
Linux file managers rely on file-type associations to decide how to identify and display files. Sayantan says that developer files can sometimes receive misleading types and icons. The article gives examples including .ts, .tsx, go.mod, .tf, go.sum, .key, bun.lock, .env, and Dockerfile.
The optional fix is intended to improve classification for such files in the user’s own environment. These examples do not mean every Linux distribution or configuration misclassifies them: behavior depends on the system’s existing file-type associations. Leave the add-on off if you do not need it, and use the project’s documented reversal instructions if you later want to undo it.

How to decide whether Frost fits
Frost is worth considering if you want a more colorful, coordinated icon set and its documented desktop support matches your setup. Before switching, check the factors that will determine how it behaves on your machine:
-
Desktop environment: Confirm your GNOME, KDE Plasma, or COSMIC setup is covered by the project’s current documentation.
-
Small-icon appearance: The project says it supplies custom 16, 22, and 24 px artwork, but visual quality and readability are subjective and have not been independently tested here.
-
File coverage and fallback: The creator’s 134-file-type count and the Papirus-then-Adwaita fallback describe the project’s stated coverage, not a guarantee that every file on your system has a bespoke Frost icon.

Customization: The README describes color presets and project-folder technology marks; consult it to see whether those options suit your preferences.
-
Installation and license: Choose between the project’s installer and documented archive method. The project identifies Frost as MIT-licensed and includes the artwork.
