What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Hiding a button or guarding a route in the browser does not stop someone from calling the underlying API. Frontend visibility controls what a user sees; authorization decides what that user may do. Enforce that decision on the backend for every protected request, against the specific action and resource involved.
Why a hidden control cannot protect an operation
The browser runs code and displays data on a user’s device, where its logic can be inspected or changed. A user can reveal a hidden button, alter a client-side role check, bypass a route guard, or send a request directly to an endpoint. A feature flag or a screen that is absent from navigation changes presentation, not the server’s permission decision.

That distinction applies whether the request comes from a conventional web page, an AJAX call, a mobile client, or a micro-frontend. Separate frontend teams, repositories, or deployments do not turn browser components into security boundaries. Each request that reaches a protected operation must be authorized by a trusted backend boundary. OWASP ASVS 5.0 requirement 8.3.1 says: “Verify that the application enforces authorization rules at a trusted service layer and doesn’t rely on controls that an untrusted consumer could manipulate, such as client-side JavaScript.” OWASP ASVS 5.0

Authentication establishes who is making a request. Authorization determines whether that identity may perform a particular action on a particular resource. A signed-in user is not automatically entitled to every feature, record, or administrative function.

For example, the backend should not approve an update merely because the caller has a valid session. It must decide whether that caller may update the requested record under the applicable policy. Where an application separates customers or organizations into tenants, the decision must also account for the relevant tenant rather than trusting a tenant identifier supplied by the browser. OWASP’s authorization guidance emphasizes checks for each request and resource. OWASP Authorization Cheat Sheet
What the backend must enforce
Check every protected request
Make the authorization decision at a trusted service layer or equivalent backend boundary whenever a protected operation is requested. Do not infer permission from the screen, route, or client component that initiated it. The same endpoint may be called by different screens or clients, and the server must treat each request as its own decision.

Use trusted identity and policy data
Base the decision on identity established and verified by the backend and on server-side policy data. Do not treat a role, permission, or tenant flag sent by the frontend as proof of entitlement. The client can communicate what it is trying to access; it cannot grant itself access.
Authorize the action and the resource
Permission to view one resource does not necessarily imply permission to edit it, delete it, or view another user’s resource. Evaluate the requested operation against the specific resource and, when applicable, its tenant. This prevents a broad check such as “user is signed in” from standing in for a meaningful policy decision.

- Adjustable Depth: 23-40'' adjustable depth is used for servers and network equipment, ensuring enough space for AV equipment, components, and cabling, while allowing you to access ports and equipment from multiple sides.
- Strong Load Capacity: Ground-Mounted Load Capacity: 500 lbs, Wall-Mounted Load Capacity: 150 lbs. The av rack is made of carbon steel for better weldability performance and can help save space while meeting your need to place multiple devices.
- User-friendly Design: Ergonomic design makes the open frame av rack easier to use. The additional top panel is able to place other items with more available space. Roller design moves anywhere and anytime, is convenient, and is more energy-saving.
- Complete Accessories: We provide the accessories you need, including 2 x Pallets, 145 x M5*10 Cross Head Screws, 4 x Casters, 4 x M10*50 Expansion Screws,10 x M6*12 Cage Nuts, 1 x Grounding Wire, 1 x User Manual.
- Wide Application: The server rack wall mount maximizes the use of available space, suitable for retail venues, classrooms, offices, and other places where space is limited.
Return only authorized data
Do not send a privileged response containing records or fields the caller is not allowed to see and rely on the frontend to filter it. A hidden table column or omitted screen does not make data already delivered to the browser secret. Apply least privilege to response data as well as to available actions. OWASP’s guidance covers both access decisions and limiting exposure. OWASP Cornucopia
What frontend checks are still good for
Client-side checks remain useful for usability. They can hide unavailable controls, avoid inviting an action a user cannot take, or explain an access restriction before the user submits a request. They may also keep navigation consistent with the interface’s intended experience.

Treat those checks as a convenience, not a security control. A user who bypasses them must still encounter a backend authorization decision, and the backend response—not the visual state of the page—is authoritative. OWASP’s Developer Guide provides implementation guidance for building application security into the service. OWASP Developer Guide
How to verify authorization instead of appearance
Testing only whether a button is visible proves that the interface renders as expected; it does not prove that the operation is protected. Document the rules for both functions and data, then test the backend behavior directly.

- Write down the policy. Specify which identities may perform each action on which resources, including tenant boundaries where relevant.
- Test allowed and denied cases. Include users without the required permission, attempts to access another user’s resource, and requests involving the wrong tenant.
- Call protected endpoints directly. Exercise the API without relying on the relevant screen or route, and verify that unauthorized requests are rejected.
- Inspect response contents. Confirm that denied or limited users do not receive protected records or fields that the interface merely hides.
- Use unit and integration tests. Test policy decisions and the service paths that apply them; do not make interface visibility the sole evidence of enforcement.
- Handle and log failures appropriately. Return a secure authorization failure and record relevant events so they can be reviewed.
Default-deny and least privilege provide a sound baseline: grant only the actions and data a user needs, and deny access unless the policy permits it.
