It can handle routine steps or coordinate work across applications, but people remain involved where a customer needs attention or a decision requires judgment.
What is front office automation?
Front office automation applies software and workflows to work involving current or prospective customers. It may automate a discrete task, such as capturing customer information, or coordinate a broader process spanning applications and teams.

The term describes which business work is being automated, not necessarily whether a person is present while it runs. Front-office processes may also overlap organizational boundaries with middle- and back-office operations.

Tasks with repeatable steps and clear rules are natural candidates. Automation can reduce manual handling of routine work while leaving exceptions and judgment calls to staff.
#1 Best Overall
- Customer-data capture: collect or transfer information between forms and business systems.
- Routine questions: assist with common service inquiries, routing less routine cases to a person.
- Lead handling: qualify prospects against defined criteria and support lead nurturing.
- Complaint workflows: organize information and route cases for appropriate human follow-up.
- Sales operations: support call-center tasks or process sales orders through connected systems.
A workflow may combine software actions with human steps. For example, a bot can gather and organize information while a staff member handles the customer conversation or decides how to resolve an exception.
How does front office automation differ from back-office automation?
The distinction is mainly the business function involved. Front-office automation supports customer-facing work; back-office automation applies to internal operations that do not primarily involve direct customer interaction. A single customer process can cross both areas—for instance, a sales order may begin with a customer-facing team and continue through internal processing.
Is front office automation the same as attended RPA?
No. “Front office” describes the work’s business function, while “attended” describes how an automation runs. UiPath describes attended automations as operating under human supervision and as suitable for smaller, fragmented tasks; the terms attended and unattended have also historically been called front-office and back-office automation. Those labels are related, but they are not interchangeable: a customer-facing process can include different execution contexts, and human-supervised automation is not inherently customer-facing. UiPath explains attended automation.
Where do people fit in an automated customer workflow?
Automation is not a claim that the whole customer interaction can or should be handed to software. Fortra notes that front-office robots can take over selected tasks while people interact with customers and make decisions requiring human judgment. Automation Anywhere likewise describes processes that connect bots, forms for human interaction, and human tasks. Fortra’s RPA guide and Automation Anywhere’s process documentation illustrate this combination.
What should an organization consider before automating?
- Customer impact: identify whether the task is customer-facing and what the customer experiences when it is automated.
- Human supervision: decide which steps need a person present and how staff will take over when needed.
- Judgment and exceptions: keep decisions that depend on context, discretion, or sensitive customer circumstances with appropriate people.
- Process boundaries: map where the work crosses teams, systems, or front- and back-office functions.
- Coordination needs: determine whether the task is a standalone action or a workflow that must connect applications and human steps.
These are decision criteria, not a guarantee of savings or improved performance. The cited vendor-authored material explains terminology and examples; it does not establish a universal platform choice or independently measured outcomes for front office automation.

Some automations do more than operate within one application. Workato describes event-triggered workflows that connect applications, which can be useful when customer-facing steps depend on information or actions elsewhere in an organization. Workato’s overview of workflow automation provides an example of this broader workflow approach.
