AI image generators can begin with what looks like television static because a diffusion model learns how to reverse noise. During training, it sees examples gradually corrupted with noise and learns to predict how to undo that corruption. During generation, it starts with a noise sample and repeatedly refines it into an image. The model is not painting with a physical material: it is using statistical structure learned from data to steer a noisy signal toward a plausible picture.
How does a diffusion model turn noise into an image?
Think of the process in two directions. Training moves from an image toward noise; generation runs the learned process in reverse. A forward process gradually adds noise to training images, commonly Gaussian noise. A neural network learns to estimate the noise or otherwise predict the denoising step needed to recover structure.

At generation time, the system samples an initial state from a simple noise distribution. The model then makes a sequence of predictions, each nudging the current state toward image-like structure. Early updates can establish broad shapes and composition; later ones can resolve finer details. The precise implementation varies, but the essential idea is learned iterative denoising. A technical overview of the field describes this family of methods as learning a reverse process for data gradually corrupted by noise (ACM Computing Surveys, 2023).

Why did diffusion become a practical image-generation approach?
DDPM established an influential modern formulation
Diffusion research predates the best-known 2020 formulation. Jonathan Ho, Ajay Jain, and Pieter Abbeel’s Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Models (DDPM) became a widely influential approach to high-quality image synthesis. The authors described their contribution as: “We present high quality image synthesis results using diffusion probabilistic models, a class of latent variable models inspired by considerations from nonequilibrium thermodynamics.” That is their description of the paper, not a claim that they invented every diffusion idea (DDPM paper, 2020).
The basic reverse process is sequential: each denoising update depends on the state produced by the previous update. That makes sampling an engineering concern as well as a modeling one. A method can generate good images yet require many rounds of computation before one is ready.
DDIM changed the sampling route
Denoising Diffusion Implicit Models (DDIM) proposed a non-Markovian sampling process that can use the DDPM training objective while following a different path at generation time. In their experiments, Song, Meng, and Ermon reported high-quality sampling “10× to 50× faster” in wall-clock time than the comparison they studied. That range is a result reported in their paper, not a universal speed guarantee for every model, sampler, device, or image (DDIM paper, 2020).
This distinction matters: a diffusion model’s learned denoising behavior and the sampler used to traverse it are related but not identical choices. Faster sampling did not mean that the underlying DDPM setup had simply been discarded.

How did text prompts begin guiding the image?
Noise reduction alone does not specify which image a user wants. Text-to-image generation also needs conditioning: a way for language to influence the successive predictions. Research explored both how to represent the prompt and how strongly to guide denoising toward it.
GLIDE studied text guidance and editing
GLIDE examined text-conditional diffusion and compared CLIP guidance with classifier-free guidance. In its human evaluations, the authors reported that participants preferred classifier-free guidance in the comparisons they ran. The paper also demonstrated fine-tuning for text-driven inpainting, where a prompt guides edits to part of an existing image. These findings describe GLIDE’s experiments; they do not establish that one guidance method wins across all systems and tasks (GLIDE paper, 2021).

Imagen paired diffusion with language understanding
Imagen, published in 2022, paired a diffusion model with a large language model for text understanding. Its authors reported an FID score of 7.27 on COCO without training on COCO and introduced DrawBench for more challenging text-to-image comparisons. The FID figure belongs to Imagen’s paper and its stated COCO evaluation context; it is not a current leaderboard result or a direct ranking against every later system (Imagen paper, 2022).

Benchmark numbers depend on the dataset, metric, training setup, and evaluation design. Human preference results likewise apply to the specific comparisons made in a study. They should not be treated as interchangeable measures of universal image quality or prompt-following ability.

What changed when diffusion moved into latent space?
Pixel-space diffusion processes a representation tied directly to image pixels, which can be computationally demanding, especially at high resolution. Latent diffusion first encodes an image into a compressed representation, performs much of the denoising there, and then decodes the result back into image space. The compression reduces the spatial burden of the diffusion process without making computation disappear.
Rombach and colleagues’ latent diffusion work also used cross-attention to connect the image-generation process with conditions such as text. That offers a flexible way to inject prompt information into denoising. The authors reported substantially lower computational requirements than pixel-based diffusion while maintaining strong results on the tasks they evaluated. This is an architectural efficiency strategy, not a promise that every latent diffusion model is inexpensive to run (Latent diffusion paper, 2021/2022).
| Approach | Where or how it works | What it contributed |
|---|---|---|
| DDPM | Learned reverse denoising process; iterative sampling | Influential modern formulation for high-quality image synthesis |
| DDIM | Alternative non-Markovian sampling path using the DDPM objective | Sampling acceleration in the authors’ experiments |
| GLIDE | Text-conditioned diffusion with studied guidance methods | Explored prompt guidance and text-driven inpainting |
| Latent diffusion | Denoising in a compressed representation, with cross-attention for conditions | Reduced computational demands relative to pixel-space diffusion in evaluated tasks |
What the history does—and does not—say
These developments solved different problems rather than forming a simple chain in which each new system replaced the last. DDPM helped establish an influential training and generation formulation; DDIM explored a different sampling route; GLIDE and Imagen advanced text conditioning and understanding; latent diffusion reduced the spatial cost of running much of the process. There is no single ranking that follows from these papers because they evaluate different systems, tasks, and measures.

In a 2023 study, Carlini and colleagues used a generate-and-filter pipeline to recover more than a thousand training examples from diffusion models, including personal photographs and company logos. Their result is evidence that memorization can occur; it does not mean every generated image is a copy, nor does it resolve questions of copyright, consent, or legal responsibility (Extracting Training Data from Diffusion Models, 2023).
