SpaceX’s CRS-31 was a NASA cargo mission, not a single-purpose science flight. A Falcon 9 launched its Dragon spacecraft from Kennedy Space Center on November 4, 2024, carrying more than 6,000 pounds of supplies, equipment, and research to the International Space Station (ISS). The investigations highlighted by NASA and the ISS National Laboratory ranged from solar-wind measurements and Antarctic moss to materials aging and a possible method for repairing spacecraft hulls.

The mission’s launch and cargo delivery were reported by NASA. The experiment descriptions below are objectives and technology demonstrations; NASA and ISS National Laboratory descriptions do not report final results for every investigation.

What CRS-31 was

CRS-31 was SpaceX’s 31st commercial resupply mission for NASA and the 11th SpaceX flight under the agency’s CRS-2 contract. The first 20 SpaceX cargo missions flew under NASA’s original CRS contract. A Falcon 9 launched Dragon from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center, Florida, at 9:29 p.m. EST on November 4, 2024.

NASA planned autonomous arrival at the station’s Harmony module at about 10:15 a.m. EST on November 5, followed by an approximately month-long stay before Dragon’s scheduled return in December. CRS-31 combined ordinary station logistics with biological, physical-science, materials, Earth-science, and technology payloads.

NASA’s mission overview and its mission page identify the broad cargo portfolio.

Why put these experiments on the ISS?

The station supplies a combination that laboratories on Earth cannot reproduce simultaneously: microgravity, cosmic radiation, unfiltered ultraviolet exposure, and the wider space environment. Investigators can also bring samples and hardware back for detailed post-flight analysis.

That matters for questions such as how materials embrittle or discolor, how organisms respond to radiation while gravity is reduced, and how physical processes behave without normal convection or atmospheric contamination. A single Dragon flight can therefore support unrelated projects while sharing launch, station, and return infrastructure.

The four headline investigations

CODEX: measuring the solar wind

The Coronal Diagnostic Experiment (CODEX) is a solar coronagraph. It blocks the Sun’s intense direct light so instruments can observe the much fainter corona, the outer solar atmosphere that is far hotter than the visible surface.

The experiment is designed to measure the solar wind’s temperature, speed, and density. That wind is a stream of charged particles moving away from the Sun at speeds approaching one million miles per hour. The measurements can test theories about how the wind is heated and accelerated and provide scientific context for interpreting solar storms and other space-weather conditions.

CODEX is not, by itself, a complete operational storm-warning system. NASA materials describe a broader international effort involving NASA, South Korean astronomy and space-science organizations, and Italy’s National Institute for Astrophysics; they do not assign every partner the same operational role. Details appear in NASA’s overview.

ARTEMOSS: Antarctic moss under radiation and microgravity

ARTEMOSS used the Antarctic moss Ceratodon purpureus to study the combined effects of cosmic radiation and microgravity. Mosses are compact, relatively easy to maintain, and capable of surviving harsh environments, making them useful subjects for basic space-biology research.

Antarctic moss is often described as radiation-tolerant, but ARTEMOSS was intended to examine biological and genetic responses—not to prove that moss can independently sustain a spacecraft ecosystem. Results could help researchers choose organisms for future bioregenerative life-support studies and inform work on plant growth, environmental cleanup, and space agriculture.

Those applications remain possibilities. Moss is not a substitute for a food crop or a complete life-support subsystem.

Euro Material Ageing: predicting long-term degradation

The European Space Agency-backed Euro Material Ageing investigation contained two experiments. One exposed materials selected from 15 European entities through a competitive process. The other examined organic samples under ultraviolet radiation that Earth’s atmosphere normally filters out. The samples were intended to return to Earth for analysis.

Spacecraft designers need to anticipate embrittlement, discoloration, thermal changes, surface damage, and other forms of aging over years in orbit. Flight exposure can inform the design of spacecraft structures, thermal-control surfaces, sensors, and materials relevant to planetary or small-body missions.

Exposure data can reveal degradation mechanisms, but it does not automatically qualify every material for every mission or constitute a particular materials breakthrough. NASA describes the investigation’s objectives in its science preview.

ASTROBEAT: testing cold welding for internal repairs

Cold welding joins clean metal surfaces through pressure rather than conventional heat. In space, the lack of atmospheric contamination can make intimate metal-to-metal contact possible under controlled conditions, although the process is neither automatic nor universally reliable.

ASTROBEAT tested the forces required to produce cold welding between metal samples in microgravity. The proposed use is an internal repair method for a perforation in a spacecraft’s outer hull, potentially addressing damage from micrometeoroids or orbital debris.

This was a technology demonstration, not a flight-ready repair system. A practical tool would still need inspection and surface preparation, dependable leak sealing, structural validation, crew-safety procedures, automation, and compatibility with different spacecraft materials. NASA’s experiment description is in the CRS-31 science preview.

What the NASA–ISS National Laboratory webinar added

An October 25, 2024 EE Times account of the NASA and ISS National Laboratory webinar described presentations on ARTEMOSS by SETI Institute researcher Agata Zupanska, ASTROBEAT by Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology researcher Leonardo Barilaro, and CODEX by NASA Goddard’s Jeffrey Newmark.

The account also discussed two additional commercial investigations: Sachi Bio’s Nanoligome Technology project, involving brain organoids and RNA therapeutics, and ExesaLibero Pharma’s ELP-004 drug-crystallization project. They should be treated as webinar-reported project descriptions, not as evidence that a therapy or product had been demonstrated. ELP-004 was described as a candidate addressing bone loss associated with disease, not an approved arthritis treatment.

The webinar’s central message was that the ISS offers commercial and academic investigators access to microgravity, radiation, and thermal conditions alongside NASA and international research expertise. Access to that environment creates an experiment opportunity; it does not guarantee a medical product, a crop system, or a deployable spacecraft technology.

What is known—and what is not

  • Confirmed: CRS-31 launched on November 4, 2024, and carried more than 6,000 pounds of cargo to the ISS.
  • Established objectives: CODEX, ARTEMOSS, Euro Material Ageing, and ASTROBEAT had defined measurement or demonstration goals.
  • Not established here: final scientific results for those projects, the Sachi Bio organoid study, or ELP-004.
  • Not claimed: a completed spacecraft repair, an immediate space-weather forecasting breakthrough, or an operational food-production system.

CRS-31’s significance is therefore best measured by the range of questions it enabled: solar-wind physics, biological stress responses, material durability, and repair concepts all shared one commercial cargo route to orbit.
