You can combine YOLOv8 object detection and optical character recognition (OCR) to build a prototype that finds a pill or package in a photo and extracts candidate text from medication packaging. That output is only a draft: neither detection nor OCR establishes the medicine’s identity, dose, safety, or clinical accuracy. The app should require a person to check and confirm every field before it saves a record.
What the prototype does—and does not do
The two model stages answer different questions. Object detection identifies where a target appears in an image; OCR recognizes visible characters. Ultralytics documents a medical-pills detection dataset and example training and prediction workflows, while Google’s Android ML Kit reference documents text recognition from an image input. Together, these can support an image-assisted tracking workflow, not a system that verifies a medication or interprets a prescription.

Keep the product claim narrow: “find a pill or package and suggest text for a person to review.” Do not present a detected pill as an identified drug, or extracted packaging text as verified instructions. A photo may be incomplete or unclear, and recognition can be wrong.

Capture an image
Let the user photograph a medication package or pill with a camera-equipped Android phone. The sources do not establish a required phone model or accessory. For a first prototype, make clear which kind of image the detector is intended to handle; package photographs and close-up pill photographs are different inputs.

Locate the relevant region
Use an object-detection model to return a bounding box around the target region. Ultralytics’ medical-pills dataset documentation provides a single-class dataset and example calls to
model.train(...)andmodel.predict(...). Treat this as a tutorial starting point, not proof that a model can identify arbitrary pills or packaging in real-world photos. -
Recognize text from packaging
Pass a suitable package image to OCR and display the result as candidate text. Google’s Android
TextRecognizerAPI accepts an image input and returns recognized Latin-based text; Google’s broader ML Kit text-recognition documentation describes support for Latin, Chinese, Devanagari, Japanese, and Korean scripts. Check the platform and API version you choose, and do not assume a script or language is supported by every implementation.Rank #2

Ask the user to inspect proposed fields
Show recognized text and any proposed record fields in an editable review screen. Require explicit confirmation before saving; do not silently convert OCR output into a medication identity, dose, or instruction. Preserve the distinction between what the app extracted and what the user confirmed.

Save only what the feature needs
Choose an explicit retention policy for both medication records and camera images. If images are not needed after the user confirms a record, avoid keeping them by default. Explain what is stored, where it is stored, and how the user can remove it.
Train and evaluate detection for the images you expect
The Ultralytics medical-pills dataset is a useful hands-on starting point for learning detection, but its documentation does not establish robust detection across arbitrary photos, packaging, imprints, shapes, or colors. A prototype intended for a particular setting needs representative images and evaluation on examples that reflect that setting. Include variation in lighting, background, distance, orientation, and occlusion where relevant, and check whether the detector finds the intended region rather than treating a successful box as proof of drug identity.

- AM/PM COMPARTMENTS: Plan doses for morning and evening with separate AM/PM compartments
- LARGE CAPACITY: Each compartment can hold 12 aspirin sized tablets
- CONTOURED BOTTOMS: Planner compartments have contoured bottoms so retrieving your medication out of the planner is simple
- CLEAR LIDS: Clear planner lids keep your medication visable to help prevent missed doses
- HEALTHY LIVING: Amazon Basic Care products make living healthier simply easier
Do not invent or imply an accuracy figure from the existence of a dataset or training example. Detection performance must be measured for the particular data and task, and even strong localization would not validate a medicine, dose, or safety decision.

Google states in its ML Kit Terms & Privacy, last modified May 14, 2025, that “When you use ML Kit APIs, processing of the input data (e.g. images, video, text) fully happens on-device, and ML Kit does not send that data and the resultant outputs to Google servers.” The same terms say ML Kit may contact Google servers for bug fixes, model updates, and hardware compatibility information, and sends performance and utilization metrics. On-device input processing therefore does not mean an app has no network activity or no privacy obligations.

Your own app still determines whether photos, extracted text, or confirmed records are logged, synchronized, backed up, or shared. Make those choices explicit, minimize retained data, and avoid sending sensitive images or text to a separate service unless that processing is necessary and clearly disclosed. The sources here do not evaluate cloud OCR alternatives.
Review licensing and intended use before release
Check the model license for your deployment
Ultralytics lists AGPL-3.0 and Enterprise licensing options, with Enterprise intended for certain commercial product and service deployments. The appropriate terms depend on how you use and deploy the software; review the current Ultralytics documentation and licensing material for your exact case rather than assuming a prototype license automatically covers a product.
Assess the app’s actual functions and claims
The FDA’s September 2022 guidance describes a function- and risk-focused policy for device software functions and mobile medical applications. Its policy navigator includes simple prompting for predetermined medication dosing schedules as an example, but that is not a blanket exemption for every app with reminders. Intended use, claims, and what the software does matter. If the product moves beyond personal or educational tracking—especially if it interprets information or directs medical decisions—review the current FDA guidance and seek appropriate regulatory advice for the functions being offered.
