Start by mapping dependencies, choose a provisioning route for each device cohort, and validate that route with representative users before expanding it. Microsoft’s Microsoft Entra join planning guidance frames the work around identity infrastructure, device management, applications and resources, and provisioning.
What changes in a migration to Microsoft Entra join?
A Windows device’s join state is only one part of the transition. You also need to decide how the device will be provisioned, how it will enroll in management, how users will receive policies and apps, and how they will reach the resources they need. A successful join alone does not establish that a legacy application, network resource, certificate, or policy will work as expected in the target setup.

Plan those areas as separate readiness checks, with named owners and a way to record unresolved dependencies. Microsoft’s deployment plan provides the broad categories; the exact compatibility and remediation decisions depend on your organization’s environment.
1. Inventory dependencies and define migration cohorts
Build an inventory before selecting a rollout route. Capture the details that can affect whether a user can sign in, receive management, or do their work after the change:
#1 Best Overall
- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- Device and user: device owner, location, connectivity constraints, Windows support state, and the support or recovery contact.
- Current identity and management: domain and OU, current management enrollment, and any device-specific configuration that must be recreated or replaced.
- Work applications and resources: critical apps, file and print services, and any other resources users must access.
- Connectivity and security dependencies: certificates, Wi-Fi and VPN access, authentication methods, policies, and security controls.
- Data and recovery: local user data or profiles that need handling, backup requirements, and the recovery path if provisioning fails.
Group computers by technical dependencies and user impact rather than department alone. A cohort might consist of devices that share a critical app or connectivity requirement. Keep an exception register for dependencies that are not yet validated, and assign each item an owner and a decision: remediate before migration, accept the risk, or defer the cohort.
Set up a representative pilot and define the recovery approach before changing production devices. There is no universal pilot size or rollback sequence in the cited Microsoft planning material; choose these based on the size, risk, and support capacity of your environment.
2. Confirm identity and management readiness
Check who can join and enroll devices
Before user-driven provisioning, confirm that the intended users are permitted to join devices. If automatic Intune enrollment is part of the target, confirm that those users are included in the configured MDM user scope. Microsoft’s automatic enrollment setup guidance describes enrollment configuration as part of the user-driven workflow.

Prepare the target experience
Define the policies, application delivery, compliance evaluation, and support process users should encounter after the transition. Do not treat registration, join state, and management enrollment as interchangeable milestones: track each separately in operational reporting so the team can tell whether a device is merely known to Autopilot, joined to Microsoft Entra, or enrolled in MDM.
For Autopilot specifically, registering a device makes it available to the Autopilot service; registration itself does not enroll it in Intune. Intune enrollment occurs as the device proceeds through the Autopilot process when enrollment is configured.
3. Choose the provisioning route for each cohort
Microsoft documents self-service setup, user-driven Windows Autopilot, and bulk enrollment as provisioning approaches. The right fit depends on the required user interaction, the device’s current state, data handling, and how much control IT needs over setup. For existing devices that need a fresh installation, Autopilot for existing devices is a separate route.

| Route | Setup and user interaction | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Self-service join | User interaction during OOBE or from Settings, as described in Microsoft’s planning comparison. | The planning comparison says the joining user is a local administrator by default. Check that this matches local policy; the cited comparison does not state a user-data migration method. |
| User-driven Windows Autopilot | A guided OOBE process. The user is prompted for organizational credentials; the device can join the configured directory, enroll in MDM when configured, and apply the Enrollment Status Page experience. See user-driven mode. | Prepare enrollment configuration, device registration, group and profile assignment, and user readiness. The workflow does not by itself establish that existing local profiles or data are preserved. |
| Bulk enrollment | Administrator-driven setup without user interaction during setup, according to Microsoft’s planning comparison. | Validate whether the approach fits your required user assignment and management workflow. The cited comparison does not state a user-data handling method. |
| Autopilot for existing devices | A Configuration Manager task sequence can perform a fresh Windows installation on an existing domain-joined device, followed by Autopilot provisioning. See Windows Autopilot for existing devices. | Plan backup and restoration separately: the documented route uses a fresh installation and does not establish automatic preservation of local profiles or user data. |
Do not mistake registration or profile assignment for migration
Autopilot registration prepares a device for the service; it is not the join or MDM-enrollment event. Likewise, Microsoft notes that enabling “Convert all targeted devices to Autopilot” registers targeted devices for Autopilot; it does not, by itself, turn an existing hybrid-joined device into a Microsoft Entra joined one. The existing-device guidance describes the separate provisioning workflow.
Answering the in-place conversion question
Can an existing domain-joined PC be converted without reimaging? The route documented here for Windows Autopilot for existing devices uses a fresh Windows installation, so it should not be presented as an in-place conversion or as a guarantee that the existing profile and data remain intact. The cited material does not establish a universal no-reimage method for every existing domain-joined setup; validate any alternative against the organization’s environment and recovery requirements.

Use the pilot to exercise the actual route and target configuration—not just to confirm that a device reaches a joined state. Include users and devices that represent the dependencies in the inventory, then validate:

Track outcomes by device identity state, Autopilot registration where applicable, MDM enrollment, user readiness, and unresolved dependencies. Expand only when pilot issues have an owner and a documented remediation or accepted-exception decision. This staged approach is an operational way to apply Microsoft’s planning and enrollment distinctions; it is not a Microsoft-mandated pilot procedure.
5. Make cloud-native join the target for new devices
For net-new Windows deployments, Microsoft recommends cloud-native Microsoft Entra join and says it does not recommend deploying new hybrid-joined devices, including through Autopilot. Existing hybrid-joined devices may remain part of a transition while cohorts are assessed and moved, but a new hybrid deployment should not be treated as the strategic endpoint. See Microsoft’s guidance on hybrid-joined Autopilot deployments.
Quick Recap
Practical readiness checklist
- Dependencies and recovery needs are inventoried by device cohort.
- Join permissions and, where needed, MDM user scope are confirmed.
- The target policies, apps, compliance checks, and support process are defined.
- A provisioning route is selected for each cohort, with data handling made explicit.
- Autopilot registration, directory join, and MDM enrollment are tracked as distinct states.
- A representative pilot has tested the real user journey and recorded decisions for unresolved issues.
