“From Data Mining to Knowledge Discovery in Databases”: The 1996 AI Magazine Overview

The 1996 AI Magazine overview defines data mining as a pattern-discovery step within the broader KDD process, connecting the field to statistics, machine learning, databases, and practical applications.

Usama Fayyad, Gregory Piatetsky-Shapiro, and Padhraic Smyth’s 1996 AI Magazine article explains the key distinction: knowledge discovery in databases (KDD) is the broader process of turning large, low-level data into useful knowledge, while data mining is the step that applies algorithms to find patterns. The overview also places KDD in context with machine learning, statistics, databases, and the practical demands of real-world analysis.

What is the difference between data mining and KDD?

KDD, or knowledge discovery in databases, describes the end-to-end process of finding useful knowledge in data. Data mining is one part of that process: the application of methods for discovering and extracting patterns. Fayyad, Piatetsky-Shapiro, and Smyth put it plainly: “At the core of the process is the application of specific data-mining methods for pattern discovery and extraction.” The article, published in AI Magazine in 1996, treats mining as central, but not as a synonym for the whole KDD process.

The distinction matters because useful results depend on more than choosing an algorithm. A discovery process must also address the data and the purpose of the analysis, judge whether the patterns are relevant and useful, and communicate findings in a form people can use. The article frames possible outcomes broadly: compact reports, abstract models, or predictive models.

What does the 1996 overview cover?

The article connects KDD with machine learning, statistics, and database research, then considers how those areas meet in applications. It discusses the motivation for KDD—digital data growing beyond what people can examine manually—and examples across health care, science, finance, retail, marketing, and other fields.

Its scope extends beyond definitions and history. The authors cover the general multistep process, algorithmic methods, practical challenges in applying KDD, and future opportunities for AI technology in KDD systems. That makes the article useful as an introduction to both the intellectual boundaries of the field and the work involved in putting discovery methods into practice.

How did KDD become a research community?

The 1996 overview appeared as the field was establishing recurring conferences and a dedicated research community. The official KDD-96 call for papers says that KDD-95, held in Montreal in August 1995, attracted more than 340 participants. It scheduled KDD-96 for August 2–4, 1996, in Portland, Oregon, sponsored by AAAI and held alongside AAAI-96 and UAI-96.

The call’s subject areas show how broad the agenda already was: process models, relevance and utility evaluation, visualization, interactive exploration, privacy and security, data-mining systems, and applications in business, science, medicine, and engineering. These concerns help explain why KDD meant more than running pattern-finding algorithms on a dataset.

Where can you read more about the origins of data mining?

For a related book-length resource, Fayyad’s publication page identifies Advances in Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (AAAI Press, 1996) as a book coedited by Fayyad, Piatetsky-Shapiro, Smyth, and R. Uthurusamy. Fayyad’s publication page is the source for that identification.

A separate archival volume is Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (KDD-96), a 405-page illustrated book edited by Evangelos Simoudis, Jiawei Han, and Usama Fayyad (ISBN 978-1-57735-004-0). The AAAI library record provides its publication details.
