Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →FreshRSS is free, self-hosted software for collecting RSS and Atom feeds on a server you control. You do not pay for the reader itself, but you do need a compatible server environment and must take responsibility for updates, storage, backups, and security. You can read through its web interface or connect a compatible app using one of its APIs.
What FreshRSS does
FreshRSS gathers posts from RSS and Atom feeds into one place. The project describes it as lightweight and customizable, with multiple-user support, anonymous reading mode, custom tags, a command-line interface, and APIs for native clients. The software is licensed under GNU AGPL 3 and is free to self-host; an official demo is available to try before installation. See the FreshRSS project repository and its documentation.
It also offers several ways to handle sources beyond ordinary feeds: WebSub push notifications from compatible publishers, XPath-based scraping for some websites without RSS or Atom feeds, JSON input, and ways to reshare selected articles as HTML, RSS, or OPML. These are options, not guarantees: scraping depends on a site’s structure, and individual apps may not expose every FreshRSS feature.
What you need to host FreshRSS
FreshRSS runs as a web application, so you need more than a computer with a browser. The project lists a recent browser, a Linux or Windows server, a web server, PHP 8.1 or later, required PHP extensions, and a supported database. Apache 2.4 or later is recommended; nginx and lighttpd are also listed. Database options include PostgreSQL, SQLite, MariaDB, and MySQL, with minimum versions specified by the project. Requirements can change, so consult the current repository before choosing an environment or installing.
#1 Best Overall
- Preloaded with relevant feeds
- Easy to set-up and manage feeds
- Organize Feeds by Categories
- Lots of Options
- Widget
A Raspberry Pi is one possible small home-server platform, but it is optional; FreshRSS does not require a particular device. The project reports running FreshRSS on a Raspberry Pi 1 with 150 feeds and 22,000 articles at under a second response time. That is a project-reported example, with no date stated in the current README, not an independent benchmark or a promise of similar performance on other hardware, versions, or workloads.
Installation options
Manual installation
The project documents a manual setup for a server environment that meets its requirements. Its installation notes say to expose only the ./p/ folder to the web and to give the web server write access to ./data/. Follow the current project instructions for the complete process and permissions.

Docker deployment
FreshRSS also publishes official Docker images and a Compose-oriented deployment guide. Docker can make deployment more convenient for people already running containers, but it does not remove the need to manage persistent data, upgrades, access, and backups. Use the official Docker guide rather than assuming a generic container setup is sufficient.
Reading FreshRSS on a phone or another app
You can use FreshRSS through its web interface or connect compatible native clients. The project documents a Google Reader-compatible API and a Fever API; it describes the Google Reader API as the better option and the Fever API as more limited, less efficient, and less safe. App compatibility and feature support vary, so check the current status of a client and confirm which API it supports before relying on it.
Rank #3
- Fetches news using standard RSS feeds
- Beautiful card-style layout for each article
- Built-in WebView to read full articles without leaving the app
- Supports multiple news categories: World, Technology, Business, and more
The project’s repository includes a client comparison covering platforms and capabilities such as offline reading, syncing, favorites, labels, podcasts, and feed management. Those details can change as apps are updated or abandoned, so treat the list as a starting point rather than a guarantee.
Customization and extensions
FreshRSS supports custom tags and extensions, which can add or adapt functionality. The project distinguishes extensions supported and published by the FreshRSS development team and community from extensions published independently by third-party developers. Do not assume an independently published extension is officially supported; review the extension documentation and the status of an extension before depending on it.

Security and ongoing maintenance
Self-hosting means you are responsible for operating the server as well as using the reader. FreshRSS fetches feeds using server-side HTTP requests. Its access-control guidance identifies a potential Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) risk when users can submit feed URLs on multi-user or public-facing instances. This is a consequence of how feed fetching works, not simply a matter of careless configuration. Administrators should read the project’s access-control guidance and make deployment choices appropriate to who can add feeds and access the instance.
Updates also require attention. The project describes its rolling edge branch as receiving newer features and security fixes. Its latest branch favors fewer updates but has a trade-off: fixes are not backported to older versions. Branch and release recommendations may change; check the current repository for the project’s guidance before selecting an update strategy.

Is FreshRSS right for you?
FreshRSS is a good fit if you want control over where your feed data is stored, prefer self-hosting, and are prepared to maintain a web application. Its free software license means there is no required purchase of the reader, though hosting or hardware may cost money depending on how you deploy it.
If you do not want to manage a server, updates, backups, and security, self-hosted software may not suit your needs. Compare alternatives by asking who operates the service, who handles upgrades and backups, which apps and APIs are supported, whether scraping or extensions matter to you, how multi-user access works, and what the total cost is. The available project information does not establish a current feature-by-feature comparison with named alternatives.
