Quick answer: The Fremantle Traffic Bridge has been closed in both directions since 1 February 2026. Main Roads WA currently lists the closure through January 2027, with construction expected to take up to 12 months and the program subject to review. Drivers between Fremantle and North Fremantle should use Stirling Highway, while Live Traffic WA can provide location-based audio warnings about unusual congestion, incidents, roadworks and travel times.
Why the Fremantle Traffic Bridge is closed
The 1939 bridge is being replaced as part of the Swan River Crossings project. Main Roads says deterioration continued despite strengthening and maintenance, so the old structure must be removed while the replacement bridge deck and connecting roads are built. The new bridge is described as an extradosed design with cantilevers and cable support on the existing alignment.
The closure applies to all vehicle traffic in both directions. The bridge’s shared path for pedestrians and cyclists is also closed during construction. Official project information is available from Main Roads WA and the project road-closure summary.
How long will it stay closed?
The shutdown began on 1 February 2026. Main Roads currently lists the road closure through January 2027 and elsewhere describes it as lasting up to 12 months. That is a planning window, not a guaranteed reopening day; the agency says the construction program may be reviewed and expedited where possible.

In a 11 June 2026 update, Main Roads reported that all 46 bridge beams had been installed and concrete pours for the deck were 80% complete. Road barriers, surfacing and remaining works still had to be finished.
Where motorists should go
Use Stirling Highway as the principal detour
For trips between Fremantle and North Fremantle, the signed vehicle detour is Stirling Highway. Main Roads says the highway normally carries about 38,000 vehicles a day, while traffic modelling anticipates roughly 24,000 vehicles from Queen Victoria Street being redirected there. Those figures describe traffic volumes and modelling, not a guaranteed delay for every journey.
Expect heavier traffic on Stirling Highway and at nearby intersections, particularly on weekday peaks. Allow extra time, check conditions before leaving and follow variable-message signs rather than improvising through residential streets. Stirling Highway is also a strategic freight route serving the port, so incidents can affect commercial vehicles and local businesses quickly.

Temporary network changes
- There is no right turn onto the closed Fremantle Traffic Bridge.
- The left-turn slip lane from the bridge onto Canning Highway is closed.
- Queen Victoria Street’s southbound arrangement has been modified.
- Beach Street access and several nearby walking and cycling links have restrictions or signed detours.
- Electronic message signs, CCTV and traffic-monitoring equipment are being used to manage conditions.
- Incident-response teams are positioned around Stirling Bridge to clear problems as quickly as possible.
These measures are intended to manage diverted traffic, but they cannot guarantee free-flowing conditions. Check the Main Roads project information and the City of Fremantle road-works page for current restrictions.

Live Traffic WA is Main Roads WA’s traffic-information app for Android and iPhone. It can issue audio alerts through a phone or connected car speakers for:
- travel times;
- unusual congestion, meaning conditions worse than typical peak delays;
- crashes, breakdowns, spills, flooding and storms;
- roadworks and other hazards.
You do not need to enter a destination to receive alerts. Notifications are tailored to your location and direction of travel, and the app can run in the foreground or background. The FAQ says travel-time information can cover up to three destinations.

It is best understood as a traffic-alert service that complements a navigation app. It is not documented as a full replacement for Google Maps, Apple Maps or Waze with comprehensive turn-by-turn route optimisation.

The app-store listing identifies SkedGo as the developer, while Main Roads WA supplies the government traffic-information service described in the project material.
How to use the app safely
- Install Live Traffic WA from the appropriate app store before travelling.
- Allow location access and enable notification or audio permissions when prompted.
- Start the app before you leave and connect audio to the vehicle only when parked.
- Keep the phone securely mounted; never handle a handheld phone while driving.
- Treat an alert as a warning. Do not make a sudden lane change or turn because of an announcement.
- When an incident is reported, cross-check the Main Roads travel map or official closure information before choosing a different route.
Alerts rely on location services, mobile connectivity, permissions and available Main Roads data. “Real-time” does not mean every minor delay or local-street closure will appear immediately, and an alert may not suggest the best alternative route.

Public-transport alternatives
Closure measures include four additional Fremantle Line services—two in the morning peak and two in the afternoon peak—plus extra bus capacity and three dedicated school-bus services. Around 100 additional parking bays were planned at Fremantle Station.
The closure-era official fact sheet lists a one-zone fare from 1 January 2026 of $2.80 for SmartRider users and $3.50 for other users. It also describes free parking for qualifying train users who tag on with a valid SmartRider. Fares, concessions and eligibility can change, so check current details with Transperth’s Fremantle Traffic Bridge closure page before travelling.
Transperth’s journey planner is more useful than Live Traffic WA when the main question is which train or bus to take, whether a service is running and how to make a first- or last-mile connection.

Walking and cycling around the closure
The bridge shared path is closed. Follow signed path detours rather than the vehicle route, which is not automatically suitable for walking or cycling. Main Roads identifies Transperth routes 998, 999 and 107 as alternatives for crossing the river safely; check current bike-carriage rules, service conditions and accessibility before boarding.
Transport WA provides a free Fremantle community map for walking, wheeling and cycling. It shows quieter streets, bike routes, on-road lanes and shared paths and can be saved for offline use through Avenza Maps: consider your travel options to and around Fremantle. Allow extra time at Queen Victoria Street, Beach Street and other changed intersections.

If Stirling Highway is blocked or the app fails
When an incident blocks the detour
- Do not create an improvised shortcut through local streets.
- Check the Main Roads travel map and official incident information.
- Follow police, traffic-controller and variable-message-sign directions.
- Delay the trip or switch to Transperth if that is practical.
When Live Traffic WA gives no alerts
- Check location permission and notification or audio access.
- Confirm mobile-data connectivity and the phone’s speaker or Bluetooth connection.
- Check whether battery-saving settings have suspended background activity.
- Make sure the app is running before departure.
These are standard phone checks; menu names vary by Android and iOS version.
