Free Web Scraping APIs for Structured Data Extraction: What You Can Test for Free

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a first test, compare ScrapingBee, ScraperAPI, and Apify on the same small set of public pages and the same expected fields. Their free offers use different meters: API credits for ScrapingBee and ScraperAPI, and Actor or compute-based spending for Apify. Those allowances are not interchangeable page counts, and none establishes which service extracts data most accurately. Validate the returned values against the source pages before choosing one for a larger job.

What these free offers do—and what they do not tell you

A web scraping API can retrieve a page on your behalf and, depending on the service and configuration, help you turn its contents into fields such as a title, date, or price. A free plan or trial is useful for testing access, configuration, response handling, and a small extraction workflow. It is not an unlimited collection allowance, a guarantee that every page is accessible, or proof that extracted values are correct.

The vendors meter use differently. A request may cost more when a target domain or requested feature requires extra work, and Apify’s free allowance is expressed as spend on Actors rather than a stated number of API requests. Check each vendor’s current terms and pricing before estimating a job. The amounts below are vendor-published figures retrieved on September 29, 2026; offers can change.

Compare the free options on their own terms

Service Vendor-published free access Structured extraction and metering Best first question
ScrapingBee 1,000 free credits; no credit card required, according to its pricing page. Supports extraction rules that return structured JSON and natural-language AI extraction. AI extraction adds five credits to the request’s base cost; the base varies with configuration. Do the rules return the exact fields and types needed, and what does this configuration cost per successful result?
ScraperAPI Its pricing page advertises a free plan with 1,000 credits and up to five concurrent connections. It separately advertises a seven-day trial with 5,000 credits. Documented examples charge one credit for a standard request, five for Amazon, and 25 for Google or Bing. Does the target domain change the credit cost, and is the concurrency limit enough for the test?
Apify The official pricing page lists a $0 Free plan with $5 to spend on Store Actors or user-built Actors. The page lists $0.20 per compute unit. Total use depends on the Actor run and resources consumed, rather than a directly comparable request-credit count. Would a ready-made Actor or managed platform help enough to justify compute-based accounting?

These are vendor claims, not a standardized comparison. Do not divide a plan’s allowance by one assumed request cost and call the result a guaranteed number of pages: target domains, rendering choices, Actors, and other configuration can change consumption.

How to test extraction quality before committing

Run a controlled trial that measures whether the values you need are actually present and usable. A successful HTTP response is not the same as a successful extraction, and neither proves that collecting or reusing the page’s contents is authorized.

  1. Choose a small, permitted sample. Use a handful of public pages representative of the workflow, including any page layouts or domains that matter to your use case. Check site terms and applicable rules before collecting or reusing data.
  2. Write down the schema first. Define a short list of fields and expected types, such as title (string), date (date-formatted string), and price (number or a consistently formatted string). Record the expected value and source page for each field.
  3. Use the same inputs for every candidate. Submit the same pages and request the same fields using each service’s current official setup instructions. Save the raw response, structured result, HTTP status, and the usage or credit cost the service reports.
  4. Check values, not just response shape. Compare each field with the source page. Count missing values, incorrect values, inconsistent types, and failures caused by changed layouts. Add application-level checks such as a permitted date range or a price that parses as expected.
  5. Repeat a small sample and estimate from observed use. Calculate credits or compute consumed per successful result in your own test. Then estimate a larger job with headroom for failures and layout changes; do not assume the trial’s initial cost will apply unchanged to every target.

This process is especially important because the available vendor materials do not establish an independent, apples-to-apples accuracy winner. Keep vendor descriptions separate from your measured results.

Structured extraction choices in ScrapingBee

ScrapingBee describes two ways to request structured output: natural-language instructions with ai_query, or defined JSON extraction rules with ai_extract_rules. Rules are a direct fit when the fields and desired structure are known; a natural-language query may be convenient when describing the task is easier than defining rules. Neither approach removes the need to verify output against the page and your expected types.

ScrapingBee says its AI extraction feature adds five credits to the base request cost. The documentation says request costs can range from one to 75 credits depending on configuration, and that rendering and proxy settings affect the base cost. The product page does not provide a fixed accuracy rate; it says quality depends on page structure, content, and instructions. Treat that as the vendor’s characterization, not an independent benchmark.

For implementation, consult the official HTML API documentation for current endpoint, authentication, parameters, and response details. It documents bearer-token authentication, extraction rules, JavaScript rendering, and a 2 MB per-request limit. Do not put API keys in public repositories, client-side code, or shared examples. The documentation advises disabling JavaScript rendering when downloading non-HTML files.

Credit and compute costs: what can change the estimate

ScrapingBee

Its documented range is one to 75 credits per request, depending on configuration; AI extraction adds five credits over the base request cost. Rendering and proxy settings are among the factors that affect the base. Estimate using the configuration you actually tested rather than the cheapest advertised request.

ScraperAPI

ScraperAPI’s documentation illustrates target-dependent costs: one credit for a standard request, five for Amazon, and 25 for Google or Bing. These are documented examples, so check the current credits documentation for the domain and configuration you intend to use before projecting volume.

Apify

Apify’s Free plan uses a $5 spend allowance for Store Actors or your own Actors, while its pricing page lists $0.20 per compute unit. Because the run’s Actor and resource use affect total spend, count a measured run as your comparison unit rather than translating the allowance into a presumed page total.

Limits, reliability, and responsible use

  • A free allowance is finite. Trial or free-plan access gives you room to evaluate a service; it does not mean collection is unlimited or every request is free.
  • Responses need validation. Pages can change, fields can be absent, and a syntactically valid JSON response can still contain the wrong value. Retain checks for missing fields, type mismatches, and business-specific ranges.
  • Access is not permission. A technically successful request does not establish that collection or reuse is allowed. ScrapingBee notes that applicable law, site terms, copyright, privacy requirements, and data-use rights matter. Consider those restrictions before collecting, especially for personal or restricted information. This is not legal advice.
  • Do not extrapolate from one page. A small test can expose basic fit and cost, but it cannot establish broad accuracy across domains, layouts, or time.

ScreenshotNeo is an adjacent tool, not a structured scraper

If your actual need is a visual record of a page rather than extracted fields, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for a structured-data scraper. Its capture can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; it does not make a screenshot into validated title, date, or price fields. It may fit a separate capture step or a workflow where a visual artifact is the deliverable.

Or skip the browser setup

One GET request can capture a page. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and setup.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for the free plan.

Which option should you try first?

  • Try ScrapingBee if you want to evaluate documented JSON extraction rules or natural-language AI extraction and can measure the resulting credit cost.
  • Try ScraperAPI if its free-plan concurrency and target-specific credit examples match the scale and domains of your first test.
  • Try Apify if a Store Actor or user-built Actor and a managed platform suit the job better than comparing per-request credit allowances.

Choose based on your own test’s correct-field rate, failure modes, and cost per successful result—not a universal accuracy ranking that the available evidence does not support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a free scraping API plan mean I can scrape any website?

No. A free allowance describes a vendor’s billing offer, not permission to collect or reuse a particular site’s content. Review relevant site terms and applicable rules for your use case.

Can I compare these services by counting credits alone?

No. ScrapingBee and ScraperAPI use credits, while Apify’s cited Free plan is spend on Actors and compute units. Even credit costs vary by configuration or target.

Is a screenshot API a substitute for structured extraction?

No. A screenshot is a visual capture; extracting and validating fields such as dates or prices requires a separate structured-data workflow.
