You can guide an image generator toward a font style with a prompt, but a prompt alone is not a dependable way to reproduce an exact typeface. For brand-accurate lettering, prepare the text in your licensed font and either use it as a composition reference or add it over the generated image afterward. For automated Photoshop documents, use a font the rendering service can resolve and configure what happens if it cannot.

Choose the workflow based on how exact the lettering must be

There are three practical ways to handle custom typography. Prompting is quickest when the text is short and an approximate style is acceptable. A prepared lettering image can give a generator a layout to follow. For exact spelling and font fidelity, generate the background first and typeset the text afterward in an editor that has access to the font. Automated Photoshop workflows can resolve a font by its PostScript name or use a supported hosted font resource.

Workflow Lettering accuracy Control Font access and repeatability
Prompt only Variable; most suitable for short text Fast, but limited The OpenAI guidance cited here does not establish direct font-file use; repeatability is low to medium.
Structure reference Can preserve prepared lettering layout more closely Stronger composition control; a style reference can add visual treatment Requires a reference image and rights to use it; repeatability is medium.
Typeset after generation Highest control over exact font and spelling Generate the background separately, then position text in an editor Requires the font to be installed or available in the editor; repeatability is high for templates.
Adobe Photoshop API or PSD workflow High when the requested font resolves Designed for editable production files Requires an Adobe Fonts entitlement or a supported hosted custom font resource; repeatability is high.

How to prompt for better-looking text

When experimenting with an image generator, keep the requested wording short and make the typography instructions explicit. OpenAI Academy’s guidance recommends putting the text in quotation marks or using ALL CAPS, and specifying font style, size, color, and placement. For uncommon words, spell them letter by letter. For dense layouts, request “sharp text rendering,” but plan to polish the result in a design tool if the lettering must be exact.

  1. Write the exact headline or label you want. Remove copy that is not essential to the image.
  2. Put the wording in quotation marks, or use ALL CAPS if that suits the design.
  3. Name the font characteristics in ordinary terms—for example, serif or sans serif, bold or light—and state the size, color, and location.
  4. Generate several variations. Check both spelling and letter shapes rather than assuming the prompt was followed exactly.
  5. If the wording or brand typeface is wrong, do not keep adding more text to the prompt. Switch to a reference image or typeset the lettering after generation.

Prompting communicates a visual request; it does not establish that the generator has loaded your font file. Treat a named font in a prompt as direction, not as proof of exact font rendering.

Use a prepared text image as a structure reference

If placement and line breaks matter, first render the lettering or logo in the real font using an editor you are licensed to use. Export it as an image and upload it as a Structure reference in Adobe Firefly. Increase the reference Strength when you want the generated composition to follow that prepared layout more closely. A Style reference serves a different purpose: it guides the visual treatment. Using Structure and Style references together can provide more control over layout and appearance.

  1. Set the final wording, line breaks, and approximate arrangement in the licensed font.
  2. Export a clean reference image of the lettering or logo. Use only text and artwork you have the right to submit.
  3. In Firefly, add the image as a Structure reference and adjust Strength to tune how closely the composition follows it.
  4. If you also want a particular visual treatment, add a Style reference rather than expecting the Structure reference to control both jobs.
  5. Inspect the generated lettering. If exact glyph shapes or spelling are mandatory, use the generated image as a background and put the original text on top in an editor.

A structure reference is a way to guide layout, not a guarantee that every generated letter will be an exact copy of the supplied typeface. For logos, legal marks, product names, and other high-stakes text, final typesetting is the safer finishing step.

Typeset the final text after generating the background

For exact brand typography, separate the image-making task from the text-making task. Generate the background without relying on the generator to reproduce the final copy, then add the real text in a design editor with the licensed font available. This gives you direct control over spelling, kerning, line breaks, size, and placement. It also makes revisions easier: changing a headline does not require regenerating the entire image.

  1. Generate a background with enough clear space for the intended text.
  2. Open it in an editor where the correct font is installed or available to your account.
  3. Add the text as editable type rather than baking it into an intermediate image, when the editor supports that workflow.
  4. Check contrast, legibility at the final output size, and the font’s license for the intended use.
  5. Export the finished artwork in the format and dimensions required by your destination.

This is usually the most reliable approach for repeatable campaign graphics and templates. It does require a separate editing step and access to the font in that editor.

Resolve fonts in Photoshop API and PSD production

For automated Photoshop document rendering, Adobe documents two routes: Adobe Fonts can be selected at render time by PostScript name when the account has the required Fonts entitlement and product profile, or a custom font can be referenced through the text API using its correct PostScript name and an href to a supported cloud-storage resource. Adobe marks the Adobe Fonts API capability as beta.

Use the font’s PostScript name, not just the name displayed in a design brief or a guessed filename. A font that is installed on your own workstation is not automatically available to a remote rendering service. Confirm that the account or API workflow can access the font resource before relying on it in production.

Set missing-font handling explicitly. The documented choices are fail and useDefault; the documented default font is ArialMT. Choose fail when a silent substitution would make an asset unacceptable. Use useDefault only when a fallback is an intentional and reviewed outcome. Otherwise, a job may complete with typography that differs from the design.

Canva and account-specific font availability

Canva supports adding or generating images and editing them in designs, but its app documentation says apps cannot upload or define custom fonts, use Canva Pro fonts, or download underlying font files. That restriction is specifically about Canva apps; it does not establish that every Canva editor or account context has identical font availability. Check the font options available in your own account and editor, and do not assume an app integration can supply an arbitrary font file.

A practical end-to-end workflow

  1. Prepare the copy and rights. Finalize the short text and confirm that your license permits the font’s intended use and submission to the chosen service.
  2. Choose the accuracy level. Use a prompt for exploration, a Structure reference for stronger layout guidance, or post-generation typesetting for exact brand lettering.
  3. Generate the visual. Keep prompt text concise; leave clear space if you intend to add final type later.
  4. Finish the typography. Apply the licensed font in an editor, or resolve it explicitly in the Photoshop API workflow.
  5. Validate the output. Check spelling, font identity, line breaks, legibility at actual display size, and whether any automated job substituted a fallback.
  6. Save a repeatable source. Keep the editable design, reference image, font identification, and relevant settings together so future revisions can use the same layout.

Troubleshooting common font problems

The generator changes or misspells the wording

Image generators can render text inconsistently, particularly when the wording is long or unusual. Shorten it, quote it or use ALL CAPS, and spell uncommon words letter by letter. If the copy must be exact, add it afterward in an editor.

The style is close, but the font is not the real brand font

A style description is not the same as loading a font file. Create a reference image using the licensed typeface and try it as a Structure reference, or typeset the final copy after image generation.

The reference affects style but not placement

Check that the prepared lettering image is assigned as a Structure reference. A Style reference guides appearance; it does not serve the same layout-control role. Adjust Structure Strength if the generated composition is not following the reference closely enough.

Photoshop renders a substitute font

Verify the exact PostScript name, confirm the Adobe Fonts entitlement and product profile or the availability of the hosted custom font resource, and inspect the missing-font setting. Set it to fail when substitution is unacceptable. The documented default fallback is ArialMT.

A font works locally but not in an API job

Local installation does not prove that a remote service can access the font. Use a documented API font route: an eligible Adobe Fonts selection or a supported cloud-storage resource referenced with the correct PostScript name and href.

A Canva app does not offer the font I need

Canva’s app documentation says apps cannot upload or define custom fonts, use Canva Pro fonts, or download font files. Check availability in the editor and account you are using, or finish the typography in an editor that provides the licensed font.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API, not an image generator or a custom-font renderer. If you have already published the finished image on a webpage and need a screenshot of that page, one GET request can capture it. The API supports PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

For webpage captures, ScreenshotNeo removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Font licensing and repeatability checks

Custom-font access is both a technical and a rights question. Confirm that your font license covers the way you will use it, including any use in a hosted rendering service or submitted reference image. Then make the workflow reproducible: record the PostScript name for API use, keep the reference art or editable source, and decide in advance whether missing fonts should fail the job or use a fallback.

  • Exact brand lettering: prefer post-generation typesetting or a verified API font route.
  • Layout exploration: use a prepared Structure reference and treat the output as a draft until checked.
  • Fast concepting: prompt with short quoted copy and explicit style, size, color, and placement.
  • Automated rendering: verify entitlement or font-resource access and make missing-font behavior explicit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I upload a font file directly to every AI image generator?

No general upload capability is established here. The documented options vary by product: use a reference image where supported, apply text in an editor, or use the documented font-resolution route for a production API.

What is a PostScript font name?

It is the font identifier required by the documented Photoshop text API workflow. Use the font’s correct PostScript name rather than assuming its display name or file name will work.
