Review Cleanup recommendations before removing anything
Go to Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations. Review the items and any space estimate shown. Select Clean up only for categories or files you have decided you no longer need; a recommendation is a prompt to review, not a reason to delete blindly. Microsoft’s free-up-space guidance describes these options.
Take particular care with Previous Windows installation(s). Those files may be needed to return to the earlier Windows version. If you remove them, the rollback option is no longer available.

Understand what happens to OneDrive files
Microsoft’s current guidance says that on Windows 11 version 22H2 and later, the default is to make OneDrive files online-only when they have not been opened for more than 30 days. This frees local disk space without permanently deleting those cloud files. You need an internet connection to retrieve an online-only file, and downloading it again also requires available local space. Files marked Always keep on this device are excluded from Storage Sense management.

Empty the Recycle Bin when you are sure you do not need the deleted files. Until it is emptied, deleted items can continue to occupy disk space.
Moving files preserves them, but accessing them later may require connecting the external device. Deleting is appropriate only for files you do not need; removal from the Recycle Bin makes recovery less straightforward.

Update space needs vary. Microsoft gives typical estimates of 6 GB–11 GB or more for feature updates and 2 GB–3 GB or more for quality updates; these are not fixed requirements. The update path and optional content can change the amount needed. See Microsoft’s guidance for freeing space for Windows updates for the applicable workflow.

If the Temp folder fills again soon after cleanup
Rapidly recurring space use in the Temp folder is not necessarily a sign that routine cleanup failed. Microsoft’s free-up-space guidance describes a possible Microsoft Store app package issue and provides troubleshooting steps. Use that guidance for this specific symptom rather than repeatedly deleting files without identifying why they return.
