The project currently lists Apple silicon and macOS 27 as requirements, so check its live documentation before making changes.
How much Mac storage can Apple Intelligence use?
Apple says Apple Intelligence can require up to 14 GB on Macs with M3 or later and at least 12 GB of unified memory, and up to 8 GB on other compatible Mac models. Those figures are maximum requirements, not a measurement of what is installed on your Mac or how much you will recover. See Apple’s current storage requirements.

MacRumors reported that RemoveMacAI could reclaim roughly 12 GB, depending on which models are present. That is a reported estimate, not an Apple guarantee or a controlled result for every Mac. Storage accounting can also lag: macOS may take time to remove files, and the Storage settings total may not immediately match the change in available disk space. MacRumors’ report describes the utility and its claimed recovery.

What RemoveMacAI does—and which Macs it supports
RemoveMacAI is a third-party project, not an Apple utility. Its README says it turns off Apple Intelligence settings, removes downloaded models through Apple’s asset service, and uses a configuration profile to block future downloads. The project says System Integrity Protection stays enabled and it does not modify files under /System. Read the RemoveMacAI project README for current instructions and compatibility details.
The README currently lists Apple silicon and macOS 27 as requirements. For macOS 27.0.1, it specifies RemoveMacAI version 0.2.3 or later; macOS 26 and earlier are listed as unsupported. These are version-specific project claims, and support may change as the project or macOS changes. Verify the live README before proceeding.

What you lose when the models are removed
Removing the models is not simply a way to turn off a background download. It disables Apple Intelligence capabilities that depend on them. The project lists effects including:
- Siri-related AI features, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, and the ChatGPT extension.
- Summaries, smart replies, and inline text predictions.
- Photos Clean Up, Spatial Photos, Visual Intelligence, and natural-language editing in Calendar.
- Xcode predictive completion and use of Apple’s Foundation Models framework.
The project says dictation remains available because its speech models are separate. A recent 9to5Mac report also outlines the feature tradeoffs. If you rely on any of these capabilities, the storage gain may not be worth the loss.

RemoveMacAI or manual deletion?
AppleInsider has also described manually deleting Apple Intelligence models from macOS Recovery. That method is not documented by Apple, and the available account covers one Mac rather than a repeatable outcome across models. The practical differences are:

For most readers considering removal, a documented project workflow is easier to evaluate than manual file deletion, but it still means trusting an evolving third-party method. Neither approach guarantees a particular increase in free space. macOS services and restrictions can change, so do not assume future compatibility or behavior.

How to reclaim storage with RemoveMacAI
- Check compatibility and instructions. Open the project README and confirm the current macOS version requirement, the required tool version, and the project’s installation and usage steps for your Mac.
- Decide whether the feature loss is acceptable. Review the dependent features above before removing models; do not proceed if you need one of them.
- Follow the project’s current removal instructions. The README describes disabling Apple Intelligence settings, removing models through Apple’s asset service, and installing a profile that blocks downloads. Use the live instructions rather than relying on a remembered command or an older guide.
- Allow macOS time to update storage accounting. The project notes that removal may take time and that Storage settings may continue to count files in the interim. Check available disk space again later rather than treating an immediate Storage-pane reading as the final result.
Can you get Apple Intelligence back?
The project says changes can be reversed with removemacai revert or the app’s “Undo Everything” option. Its documentation also says the profile persists across OS updates, while other settings may need to be reapplied if an update resets them. Reversal does not guarantee that every model or feature will return immediately; follow the current project guidance and allow macOS to restore what it needs.
