Yes, you can host a Squad server without paying a hosting company, but “free” usually means self-hosting. You supply the computer, bandwidth, electricity, maintenance and moderation. An unlicensed self-hosted server can be listed in Squad’s Custom Servers browser. A server in the primary browser requires an Offworld Industries license and must meet its public-access, hardware and administration rules. Provider trials can remove the first invoice, but they are temporary offers with their own limits and renewal terms.

What free Squad hosting actually means
There are three different arrangements that are often described as free:

There is no recurring hosting bill, but the machine, connection, power and your time still have a cost.
- A provider trial: A commercial host temporarily waives its charge. The service remains hosted, and the trial can expire, impose resource limits or convert to a paid plan.
- A free community server: Someone else pays for the infrastructure and gives you access. You depend on that operator’s rules and continued funding; it is not a generally available free tier.
For a private test, training session or occasional clan event, self-hosting is often sufficient. A public community that wants reliable uptime and visibility in the main browser should budget for licensed hosting or operate the required licensed infrastructure itself.
Where an unlicensed server appears
The installation reference for Squad documents that servers without a license are shown in the Custom Browser. They do not receive the visibility of the primary Server Browser tab. Offworld Industries’ license policy states that licensed servers appear in the primary Server Browser tab.

This distinction affects discoverability rather than whether players can connect. You can share the server’s name, address and password with a group, but public players searching the main browser will not see an unlicensed instance there. Do not advertise a self-hosted server as having primary-browser placement unless its licensing status has been approved.
Requirements for a licensed public server
Offworld Industries’ 2026 license policy sets requirements that are easy to miss when comparing “free” offers:

- Administration: A ratio of 10 administrators per Squad server is specified by the policy. This is a staffing obligation, not merely a suggestion to install an admin plugin.
- Public access: The server must be publicly available rather than restricted to a private machine or closed invitation-only operation.
- Hardware type: The policy disallows VPS and virtual-machine hardware for licensed servers. A virtual server that looks inexpensive may therefore be unsuitable for licensing.
These are policy requirements, not a guarantee of a particular player count or frame rate. CPU performance, storage, network quality, map, mods and concurrent players still determine how smoothly an instance runs. Adding another instance also increases the stated RAM requirement by 4 GB each.

Self-hosting a Squad server step by step
The official installation material describes a conventional SteamCMD deployment. The exact menu names can vary by operating system, but the sequence is consistent.
- Choose a suitable machine. Use a computer that can remain powered on for the intended play window. Reserve memory for the operating system and other services; the policy’s 8 GB figure applies to a licensed server, not to all of your machine’s workloads.
- Install SteamCMD. Download and install the Steam command-line client for your operating system. Create a separate directory for the Squad server files so updates and logs are easy to manage.
- Download the dedicated-server application. Sign in as required by SteamCMD and install AppID
403240. A typical SteamCMD sequence usesapp_update 403240 validate; run it again when you need to apply an update. - Locate the configuration directory. Squad stores server configuration under
SquadGame/ServerConfig/. The installation guide identifies files such asServer.cfg,Admins.cfgand layer-rotation settings. Edit a copy, keep backups and use the syntax expected by the current release. - Set identity and gameplay options. Give the server a clear name, define map and layer rotations, set passwords if the event is private, and add administrator entries. Keep a record of which account has each administrative role.
- Forward the network ports. Create router port-forwarding rules from the internet-facing interface to the server’s local address. A secondary 2026 setup guide commonly cites UDP ports
7787and27165; treat those numbers as starting guidance and confirm the current port list in the installation documentation before opening your firewall. - Allow the server through the host firewall. Permit the dedicated-server executable and the same ports you forwarded on the router. Forwarding a port while blocking it locally will still prevent outside players from joining.
- Start and test locally. Launch the server, watch the log for configuration or binding errors, and connect from the same network first. Then test from an external connection, such as a phone hotspot, to verify that the router and firewall are reachable from the internet.
- Monitor and maintain it. Apply game updates, review logs, rotate maps, remove stale administrator entries and restart after operating-system maintenance. A self-hosted server has no provider team to perform these tasks for you.
Linux installations in the cited guide require GLIBC 2.17 or higher. Check the distribution’s GLIBC version before troubleshooting the game binary; an older library can prevent the server from starting even when SteamCMD completed successfully.
What self-hosting costs when the host is “free”
A zero hosting invoice does not make the operation costless. The recurring costs move from a provider to you:

- Electricity: An always-on desktop or spare server consumes power throughout the month, including when nobody is playing.
- Hardware wear: Fans, disks and power supplies run continuously and eventually need replacement.
- Internet service: Your connection must tolerate sustained upload traffic and should have an address or forwarding arrangement that players can reach. Data caps and carrier-grade NAT can make inbound hosting difficult.
- Time: Updates, backups, configuration changes, crash recovery and player support are ongoing work.
- Moderation: A public community needs active administrators, incident handling and rule enforcement. The licensed policy’s 10-admin ratio makes the staffing expectation explicit.
Calculate total monthly cost by adding electricity, any incremental bandwidth charge, replacement hardware reserve and the value of your administration time. Compare that figure with a hosted plan rather than comparing only the advertised server price.
Provider trials and paid hosting
A provider trial can be the quickest way to run a 24/7 instance without configuring a home router. FadeHost advertises a seven-day Squad trial with no card required. That is a provider-reported offer, not a permanent free tier. Confirm the allowed player slots, CPU and memory allocation, location, mod support, cancellation process and what happens when the seven days end.
For long-running communities, paid hosting is usually the practical route because the host supplies datacenter connectivity, power, monitoring and often DDoS protection. How to choose between free and paid
Choose self-hosting when control matters most
Self-hosting gives you direct access to configuration files, logs, rotations and mods. It is useful when you already have an idle physical machine, a routable connection and someone available to restart the service. Accept that an outage at home, a router reboot or a power cut takes the server offline.

Choose a trial when you need a quick proof of concept
A trial removes installation and port-forwarding work. Use the trial period to test latency from your target region, mod installation, save persistence, player capacity and administrative tools. Set a reminder several days before expiry so the server does not silently renew or shut down.
Choose paid hosting for a public 24/7 community
Compare the complete offer, not just the monthly headline:
- Guaranteed or included RAM and CPU headroom for your expected player count.
- Datacenter location and measured latency for your community.
- DDoS and network protection, backup policy and recovery time.
- Control-panel access, file management, mod support and scheduled restarts.
- Whether the plan supports the licensing and physical-hardware rules that apply to your server.
- Trial length, renewal price, cancellation window and data-export procedure.
Troubleshooting a free server
The server starts but nobody outside your network can join
Check the server’s local address has not changed, then verify the router forwards the required ports to that address. Confirm the host firewall allows the executable and test from a different internet connection. If your ISP uses carrier-grade NAT, inbound forwarding may not work without a public address or an alternative hosted machine.
The server is missing from the browser
An unlicensed instance is expected in Custom Servers rather than the primary tab. If it is absent there, verify that the process is running, the query/game ports match the current documentation, the firewall is open and the server has finished loading its configuration.
SteamCMD downloads but the executable will not launch
On Linux, check that GLIBC is at least version 2.17 as required by the cited installation guide. Re-run the application update with validation, inspect the log for missing libraries and avoid deleting configuration files until you have copied them.
Players report lag or crashes
Watch CPU, RAM, disk and network utilization while a full match is running. Remove unnecessary background workloads, leave memory headroom and test one mod or configuration change at a time. A second instance requires an additional 4 GB of RAM under the licensing policy; running multiple instances on an undersized machine can affect all of them.
The server becomes unmanageable
Maintain an administrator roster, document permissions and keep at least one backup administrator account. Public operation requires active moderation; a server that nobody can staff is not a sustainable free solution.
Before you promise players a “free” server
- Decide whether Custom Browser placement is acceptable.
- Confirm your machine, connection and power budget for the planned hours.
- Verify current ports and licensing requirements rather than copying an old tutorial unchanged.
- Test from outside your home network.
- Write down who handles updates, restarts, bans and emergency recovery.
- For a provider trial, record the expiry date, renewal terms and data-export steps.
- Do not promise primary-browser placement, player capacity, uptime or “free forever” access unless the current provider and Offworld documentation explicitly supports it.
Bottom line for different use cases
For a one-night event or private practice, an unlicensed server on your own machine can be adequate and costs no hosting fee. For a public community, the Custom Browser limitation, maintenance burden and staffing requirement quickly become more important than the nominal price. A short provider trial is useful for testing, while a licensed paid host is generally the most dependable 24/7 option. Treat every offer, provider roster and policy detail as changeable and verify the current terms before committing your players.
