For a supported Windows PC, start with Windows Security: run a full scan if a quick scan does not resolve your concern, then use Microsoft Defender Offline if you suspect malware is hiding during normal operation. Microsoft Safety Scanner and Malwarebytes Free offer additional on-demand scans; neither should be confused with ongoing real-time protection. No current independent head-to-head removal test in the sources establishes one tool as the most effective.
Which free malware removal tool should you use?
Choose based on the problem and the scan you need, rather than a universal “best” label. Windows Security is the practical first step on supported Windows PCs. An offline scan is appropriate when malware may be interfering with Windows while it is running. For a separate manual scan, Microsoft Safety Scanner or Malwarebytes Free are options described by their publishers. If the issue is unwanted advertising or junkware, Malwarebytes lists AdwCleaner as a free cleaning tool.

- Start with Windows Security: run a full scan if a quick scan finds nothing but you remain concerned.
- Suspect a persistent or hard-to-remove infection: use Microsoft Defender Offline, which restarts the PC to scan outside the ordinary Windows environment.
- Want another manual scan: use Microsoft Safety Scanner or Malwarebytes Free, bearing in mind their free-scan and real-time-protection distinctions.
- Dealing with adware or junkware: consider AdwCleaner, which Malwarebytes describes as a cleaner for those categories.
These are workflow recommendations, not a performance ranking. Product pages describe capabilities, but they do not establish comparative detection or removal rates.
What each tool does—and what free means
| Tool | Best fit | Free-use distinction | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Security / Microsoft Defender Antivirus | First scan on a supported Windows PC; quick, full, custom, or offline scans | Windows Security includes these scan choices, according to Microsoft’s Windows Security guidance. | Scan results and status are available in Windows Security; a clean quick scan does not rule out every concern, so Microsoft advises a more thorough scan when concern remains. |
| Microsoft Defender Offline | Scan for malware that may hide or interfere during normal Windows operation | Available from Windows Security on supported Windows versions; the scan restarts the computer. | Requires Windows Recovery Environment for the documented workflow. Microsoft’s compatibility and BitLocker guidance should be checked for the current system. |
| Microsoft Safety Scanner | Manual scan and attempted removal of identified malware | Microsoft describes it as a portable manual scanner that attempts to remove malware and reverse changes made by identified threats. | It does not replace an anti-malware product with real-time protection. Each downloaded copy expires after 10 days, so download a fresh one for a later scan. |
| Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) | Supplementary removal of specific prevalent malware families | Generally released monthly through Windows Update and as a standalone download. | Microsoft says it does not remove spyware and is not a general-purpose antimalware substitute. |
| Malwarebytes Free | Additional on-demand quick or custom scan | Malwarebytes’ Help Center feature table, updated September 8, 2026, lists Windows and Mac quick/custom scans as free. | The same table lists Windows real-time protection as paid; a free manual scan is not ongoing protection. |
| AdwCleaner | Cleaning adware and junkware from a PC | Listed among Malwarebytes’ free tools. | Its described cleaning focus is adware and junkware, not a substitute for a comprehensive malware response. |
| Avast free scanner | Another vendor-offered malware scan, including spyware according to Avast | Avast advertises a free scanner and removal tool. | That coverage is a vendor claim, not evidence that it outperforms the other choices. |
How to scan with Windows Security
Run a full or custom scan
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection, then choose Scan options.
- Choose Full scan for a broader check, or Custom scan to target selected files or folders. Select Scan now and follow any prompts.
- Review detections and status in Windows Security. If a quick scan found nothing but you still suspect infection, Microsoft advises a more thorough check.
Microsoft documents quick, full, custom, and offline choices in its Windows Security guidance.

Run Microsoft Defender Offline
- Save open work; the offline scan restarts the computer.
- If BitLocker is enabled on the system drive, follow Microsoft’s advice to suspend protection before starting to avoid a recovery-key prompt.
- In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection, select Scan options, choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan, and select Scan now.
- Allow the computer to restart and complete the scan. Check Windows Security afterward for the result.
Microsoft Learn describes the tool this way: “Microsoft Defender Offline is an anti-malware scanning tool that lets you boot and run a scan from a trusted environment.” It scans outside the ordinary Windows kernel, which can help when malware may bypass or interfere with the Windows shell, including rootkits. The documented scan requires Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) to be enabled.
Microsoft’s current documentation lists x64 Windows 11 and x86/x64 Windows 10, 8.1, and Windows 7 SP1 for this scan, and excludes ARM Windows and Windows Server SKUs. These listed versions do not necessarily indicate current security support; check Microsoft’s Defender Offline documentation for current requirements. A USB drive is not required for the documented Windows Security workflow on supported installations; it is only relevant to an optional bootable-media workflow.

When Microsoft Safety Scanner or MSRT makes sense
Microsoft Safety Scanner: a temporary, manual second scan
Safety Scanner detects and attempts to remove malware and reverse changes associated with identified threats. Microsoft says it does not replace Microsoft Defender Antivirus or another real-time protection product. Its downloaded tool expires after 10 days, so use a fresh download for a later scan. Microsoft lists Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and some older Windows and server versions, subject to lifecycle status. Check the official download and requirements before using it.
MSRT: narrow coverage, not a spyware cleaner
Microsoft’s Malicious Software Removal Tool targets specific prevalent malware families and is generally issued monthly through Windows Update or as a standalone download. Microsoft explicitly says MSRT does not remove spyware, and recommends Defender Offline or Safety Scanner for comprehensive malware detection and removal. Treat MSRT as a supplement for its target families, not the main tool for suspected spyware. See Microsoft’s MSRT guidance.

How to choose and use a scanner safely
Before installing or running another tool, check the details that affect whether it fits your situation:
- Operating system and architecture: verify the current supported Windows or Mac version and processor architecture on the publisher’s page.
- Scan type: distinguish an on-demand scan from scheduled or real-time protection. A manual scan checks when you launch it; it does not necessarily monitor later activity.
- Removal capability: confirm whether the free tier can remove detected items, rather than only report them.
- Restart and recovery needs: Defender Offline restarts Windows; check BitLocker and WinRE before starting.
- Freshness and expiry: Safety Scanner expires after 10 days; obtain a new copy for a later scan.
- Evidence behind claims: vendor descriptions explain advertised features, not comparative efficacy. The cited product documentation does not show which tool removes the highest share of infections.
Download scanners from the publisher’s official site, and avoid running several real-time security products simultaneously unless their vendors explicitly support that setup. If you use an on-demand scanner as a second opinion, keep the distinction between that scan and ongoing protection clear.

What to do if malware remains
If detections return, Windows behaves as though it remains compromised, or malware has caused changes that cannot be reversed, scanning may not restore a trustworthy system. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance points to resetting or restoring Windows, or reinstalling it, with the appropriate choice depending on symptoms and available clean backups. Before recovery, preserve important files carefully and avoid restoring backups that may contain the infection. Follow Microsoft’s Windows recovery options.
