Recommended Free Tools
If you want free-to-play games with worthwhile PvE, start with Warframe for fast, mobile combat and gear collecting, Guild Wars 2 for a substantial free story and open-world encounters, or Destiny 2 for cooperative missions and aspirational group activities. Path of Exile is a sensible action-RPG alternative, but its official overview supports fewer specific claims about PvE content. These are practical options, not a tested ranking: the available evidence does not establish an objective five-game “best” list.
How to choose a free PvE game
“Free-to-play” describes the entry point, not necessarily every expansion, activity, or optional purchase. The clearest example here is Guild Wars 2, whose publisher distinguishes its free core from paid expansions. Destiny 2 promotes free play but does not provide a complete current list of included activities on its free-play page. Check the live content listing before choosing a specific campaign, raid, dungeon, or expansion.

Choose by the kind of PvE you want: movement-heavy shooter combat and gear experimentation, open-world events and a branching story, or cooperative missions and group goals. The descriptions below reflect publisher materials; they are not based on hands-on testing, and they do not compare onboarding difficulty.
Four free-to-play PvE games to consider
Warframe: mobile combat, collecting, and build experimentation
Warframe suits players who want a fast third-person action shooter built around movement and customizable characters. Digital Extremes highlights Warframes with distinct abilities, parkour combat, weapon collection and upgrades, and open-world areas. Those ingredients make it a strong fit for players who like adjusting a character and loadout while moving quickly through combat.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
The official page also identifies in-game purchases, so “free-to-play” should not be read as a promise that every item or convenience is free. See Warframe’s official overview.
Guild Wars 2: free story and open-world encounters
ArenaNet says the free game includes progression to the maximum level, eight professions, a full branching story, and competitive play. For PvE, its page also points to open-world bosses and multiplayer instances. That makes the free core a particularly clear starting point if you want a story-led MMO with shared-world encounters.

Paid expansions add regions, story arcs, mounts, and profession abilities. Decide whether the free core meets your needs before paying for those additions. Check Guild Wars 2’s free-play details.

Destiny 2: solo play, co-op missions, and group goals

The free-play page does not set out a complete inventory of what is currently free. Before committing to a particular campaign, raid, dungeon, or expansion, confirm that it is available to you in the current activity and content listing. View Destiny 2’s official free-play page.
Path of Exile: an action-RPG alternative
Path of Exile is explicitly described by its official site as “A Free Online Action RPG.” The site maintains game-system information and news about leagues and events, as well as a microtransaction shop. That establishes it as a free-entry action-RPG option, but the available official overview does not substantiate a detailed PvE feature list or explain the boundaries of its free content. Treat it as an alternative to investigate rather than a fully assessed recommendation.

At a glance: which game fits your PvE preference?
| Game | Publisher-described PvE or play structure | Free-content boundary | Best fit if you want |

| Guild Wars 2 | Branching story, open-world bosses, and multiplayer instances | Free core includes max-level progression, eight professions, and the story; expansions are paid | Shared-world MMO play and a substantial free story |
| Destiny 2 | Solo or co-op play, strikes, raids, and Guardian customization | The free-play page does not list all currently included activities | Co-op missions and longer-term group goals |
| Path of Exile | Officially described as a free online action RPG | The overview does not detail free-content boundaries | An action-RPG option to explore, with fewer PvE specifics established here |
Why there is no fifth ranked pick
The First Descendant surfaced as a possible free-to-play PvE option, but the official Nexon page available for this article provided no usable overview text. Without a substantive official description or a current platform listing to confirm its PvE offer, including it as a researched recommendation would imply more certainty than the available evidence supports. For the same reason, the four games above are not ranked against one another: no common-source comparison or gameplay testing establishes a winner.
