A URL-based placeholder gallery can give a demo product several related views by keeping one seed and changing an angle parameter. A September 24, 2026 DEV Community announcement describes that approach for storefront mockups; its claims have not been independently tested here, and current service terms are not established. Treat the images as mock assets, not as photographs of goods customers can buy.
How the one-seed, several-angles approach works
The announcement uses the seed sku-1024 in example image URLs and changes the query parameter to angle=2 to request another view. The intended result is a group of related images for one mock product, rather than unrelated photos repeated across a product grid. The announcement does not say how many angles are available, whether a seed always returns the same images, or how long images remain available. The DEV Community announcement is the source for the feature description; the URL examples should be checked against the live service before implementation.

What the announcement claims
- Image dimensions can be specified in the URL path.
- WebP is the default format, with JPG, PNG, or AVIF available on request.
- Listed categories include apparel, shoes, bags, electronics, audio, and womenswear.
- The announcement says no API key, signup, or attribution is needed.
These are announcement claims, not verified endpoint behavior or terms. A first-party terms page was not established, so confirm availability, permitted commercial use, attribution rules, rate limits, permanence, image provenance, and data handling with the service before relying on it for a live storefront.

Keep placeholder imagery separate from retail product photography
Use generated or placeholder images to make wireframes, demos, and internal product concepts easier to review—not to suggest that they accurately depict an item for sale. GS1 Product Image Specification Release 3.7 describes sample, prototype, or mock-up images as sketches, images, or computer-generated renderings. Section 2.7.4 says: “The image is intended exclusively for internal use and communication between business partners (b2b) and is used to conceptualize the product for the ordering process.” GS1 AISBL ratified Release 3.7 in December 2020. For internal demos, label mock imagery clearly in the interface or surrounding documentation. Before publishing customer-facing product listings, use accurate imagery and confirm the rights and licensing terms for those assets.

Choose based on the job the image must do
- To fill a prototype grid with a consistent fictional item: the announced seed-and-angle method is designed for that use, subject to confirming the live endpoint and its terms.
- To use real photography: a photo API provides library imagery, but check licensing and attribution requirements and do not assume a set depicts the same product from multiple angles.
- To prevent blank space while an image loads: use a loading placeholder such as Shopify’s documented thumbhash rather than treating a transformed image as another product view.
- To publish a product listing: select accurate, rights-cleared product imagery. A mock image is a design aid, not evidence of the product’s appearance.
The cited API limits are documentation figures accessed in 2026 and may change; check the linked official documentation before building around them. No published study statistic establishes image quality, conversion impact, or adoption for the seeded multi-angle placeholder approach.
