Free Open-Source Geophysics Software: Which of These 7 Tools Fits Your Work?

A task-based guide to seven free, open-source geophysics tools, from Python seismology workflows and real-time monitoring to hazard analysis and dynamic rupture modelling.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single best free, open-source geophysics tool for every job. Choose by workflow: ObsPy or Pyrocko for seismological data work, SeisComP for seismic-network operations, OpenQuake for hazard and risk, OpenSees for structural or geotechnical response, seismicat for earthquake-catalog statistics, and FaultMod for specialist dynamic-rupture modelling.

Which tool fits which geophysics task?

These seven projects address different scientific and operational needs; they are not interchangeable packages. This comparison is about documented feature fit, not a ranking by speed, accuracy, adoption, or ease of use.

USGS FaultMod Dynamic rupture modelling Finite-element research code Study spontaneous rupture with choices of fault geometry and friction laws.

What each tool does—and what it does not replace

ObsPy: programmable seismological data processing

ObsPy is an open-source Python framework with parsers for common seismological formats, data-center clients, and signal-processing routines. It is a strong fit when you want to script and reproduce waveform or catalog processing in Python rather than adopt a full real-time monitoring system. The project identifies its license as LGPL v3.0. Start with the ObsPy project README for the project overview and its linked documentation.

Pyrocko: a broader seismology toolbox

Pyrocko combines a Python library with applications. Its documented scope includes waveform browsing and processing, archive management, Green’s-function calculations, ray theory, synthetic seismograms, and access to online catalogs and FDSN services. Its applications include Snuffler, Cake, and Fomosto. Consider it when your work spans several of those seismological tasks and you value both library-based workflows and standalone tools. See the Pyrocko manual overview for the documented feature set.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

SeisComP: operating seismic data and event workflows

SeisComP documentation covers data acquisition, archiving and exchange, quality control, real-time processing, event detection and location, magnitude calculation, focal mechanisms, and alerts. Its modular design supports automatic as well as interactive workflows. This makes it an operations-system choice, rather than simply another waveform-processing library. The documentation describes SeisComP as “likely the most widely distributed software package for real-time monitoring of earthquakes and other seismic events”; that is the project documentation’s qualified characterization, not an independent adoption ranking. The reviewed documentation is release 7.4.0 and identifies AGPL licensing. Consult the SeisComP introduction and scope for the system’s documented role.

OpenQuake Engine: hazard and risk calculations

The GEM Foundation presents OpenQuake Engine as software for seismic hazard and risk calculation and decision support. Choose it for those calculation workflows; it is not described as a waveform-processing package or a structural-response simulator. The reviewed manual is version 3.26.2. The OpenQuake Engine manual is the place to identify the calculation type, inputs, and setup appropriate to your analysis.

OpenSees: structural and geotechnical simulation

OpenSees is an open-source framework for simulating dynamic response in structural and geotechnical systems. Its command manual covers model generation, analysis, and recorded output, so the core work is building and analyzing a system model—not processing an earthquake catalog or running a network-monitoring operation. The Berkeley project page reported binary version 3.8.0 in February 2026; that dated version reference should not be treated as a claim that it remains the latest release. See the OpenSees documentation and Berkeley project page.

USGS seismicat: catalog statistics in R

The U.S. Geological Survey catalog describes seismicat as an R package for analyzing earthquake catalogs to estimate Gutenberg–Richter b-values and earthquake rates, including uncertainty. It is a focused statistical tool, not a general waveform-processing environment. The catalog listing is dated January 23, 2026. Find the entry through the USGS Earthquake Hazards software page.

USGS FaultMod: specialist dynamic-rupture modelling

The USGS catalog describes FaultMod as finite-element software for spontaneous dynamic-rupture models, with flexibility in fault geometry and friction laws. It is intended for a specialized modelling question, not as a general-purpose beginner’s geophysics application. Its USGS listing is dated June 29, 2026. Consult the USGS Earthquake Hazards software page for the catalog entry.

How to choose based on your workflow

  1. Start with the object you need to work on. Waveforms and catalogs point toward ObsPy or Pyrocko; live acquisition and event monitoring point toward SeisComP; hazard or risk calculations point toward OpenQuake; structural or geotechnical dynamic response points toward OpenSees; catalog-rate statistics point toward seismicat; and spontaneous dynamic rupture points toward FaultMod.
  2. Match the interface to your working style. ObsPy is a Python framework; Pyrocko offers a Python toolbox plus applications; SeisComP is a modular operations system; OpenQuake is a calculation engine; OpenSees is a simulation framework; seismicat is an R package; and FaultMod is finite-element software.
  3. Check your inputs and model before installing. Processing requires relevant seismological data; monitoring requires access to the data and operational components your network workflow depends on; hazard, risk, structural-response, catalog-statistics, and rupture studies each require inputs and models appropriate to their calculation. The projects’ manuals describe their individual workflows; the available documentation does not establish one uniform prerequisite list across all seven.
  4. Verify current release and license details. Version and licensing information is not stated for every project in the sources cited here, and release labels can change. Check the current official installation and documentation pages for supported platforms, dependencies, license terms, and release status before building a workflow around a tool.

What “best” can—and cannot—mean here

The defensible comparison is whether a tool’s documented functions match the job. The cited material does not provide a common benchmark for speed or accuracy, nor comparable adoption data across all seven projects. The USGS software page says its displayed offerings are only a subset of downloadable earthquake research software; its catalog showed 72 items when crawled in 2026. That count is a volatile catalog snapshot, not a count of equivalent alternatives or a measure of use. The seven tools here are a practical task-based selection, not an exhaustive inventory.
