Kdenlive, Shotcut, and OpenShot are free, open-source video editors that could replace CapCut—but the available evidence does not identify which one the title’s creator used or establish that switching made editing faster. Choose by matching the editor’s workflow and features to your projects, then judge speed with your own repeatable tasks.
Which editor does the title refer to?
The title does not name the editor, so it would be misleading to claim that the author switched to a particular application. The candidates assessed here are Kdenlive, Shotcut, and OpenShot. Their official pages describe different editing workflows and features, but none provides a controlled speed comparison with CapCut.

That distinction matters: an editor can offer tools that remove friction from a specific task without being faster for every creator. Your footage, computer, project complexity, and familiarity with the interface all affect the result.

How the three editors differ
| Editor | Supported systems listed by the project | Workflow and documented tools |
|---|---|---|
| Kdenlive | Linux, Windows, macOS, and BSD | Asset bins and tags, proxy media, multicam and 3-point editing, nested sequences, backups, audio mixing, effects, keyframes, color tools, and subtitle features |
| Shotcut | Windows, macOS, and Linux | Native timeline editing without an import step; its feature list includes keyframes, time remapping, motion tracking, stabilization, subtitle burn-in, chroma key, and color adjustments |
| OpenShot | Linux, Mac, and Windows | Its current page reports version 4.0.1 and highlights updates to the Razor tool, color and animation editing, and clip controls, along with color scopes, effects, keyframes, and video masks |

Choose based on the work you actually do
Consider Kdenlive for structured, multi-part projects
Kdenlive’s documented bins and tags help organize assets, while nested sequences, multicam editing, and 3-point editing support more involved timelines. Proxy media is intended to make playback smoother on lower-end systems. Automatic backups, audio tools, keyframes, color features, and subtitle options round out the workflow. The project describes Kdenlive as free and open source; its manual identifies the software as GPL-licensed and notes that Windows versions have drawbacks and a macOS port is available. These are project notes, not an independent assessment of platform performance. Kdenlive’s manual provides further platform and software information.
Consider Shotcut if you want to edit directly on the timeline
Shotcut emphasizes native timeline editing without an import step. That may suit creators whose routine starts with dragging source files into a timeline rather than organizing them in a separate import stage. Its official feature list documents tools such as keyframes, time remapping, motion tracking, stabilization, subtitle burn-in, chroma key, and color adjustments. Whether the direct-timeline approach saves time depends on how you manage media and which tasks you repeat. Shotcut’s feature list describes the available tools.

Consider OpenShot for its accessible timeline controls and current tools
OpenShot presents itself as a quick-to-learn editor. Its current project page reports version 4.0.1 and highlights changes to its Razor tool, color and animation editing, and keeping clip controls accessible while navigating the timeline. It also lists color scopes, effects, keyframes, and video masks. Those descriptions indicate what the project offers, not how quickly a new user will learn it or how it performs on a particular computer.

Compare the same ordinary project in CapCut and the alternative you are considering. Keep the footage and deliverable consistent, and time the tasks that consume your editing sessions—not just the export. A practical checklist:

- Importing or locating footage and other assets
- Making a rough cut and trimming clips
- Adding titles, subtitles, effects, or color adjustments you regularly use
- Handling playback when source footage is demanding
- Making revisions and finding the right controls again
- Exporting the finished video and checking the result
Record where you pause, repeat actions, or look for a feature. If an editor saves time on one step but adds friction elsewhere, that trade-off may not improve the whole workflow. Repeat the comparison on a representative project after you have learned the basic interface; first-use time mostly measures unfamiliarity.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the evidence does—and does not—say about speed
The official project pages document features and supported platforms, but they do not quantify editing speed, productivity, or performance against CapCut. There is no basis here for saying that any one of these editors is universally faster, easier, or the author’s confirmed choice. A defensible personal claim should name the editor, describe the creator’s setup and recurring tasks, and explain what changed; feature descriptions alone cannot prove a faster workflow.
