Windows 11’s built-in choices do not suit everyone. Five free, open-source apps cover common pain points: VLC and mpv for media playback, Windhawk for interface customization, 7-Zip for archives, and UniGetUI for managing app installations and updates. They address different problems rather than repairing Windows itself; choose the ones that match what is frustrating you.

What each app changes

App Best suited to Main trade-off
VLC Everyday playback of a wide range of media and streaming sources Its broad feature set may be more than you need for simple playback
mpv Minimal, configurable video playback No official full graphical interface; comfortable keyboard use helps
Windhawk Changing selected Windows shell details with community-made mods Mods may need attention after Windows updates
7-Zip Handling compressed archives with a dedicated utility Specific format and encryption claims should be checked against current 7-Zip documentation
UniGetUI Managing supported package-manager apps through a graphical interface Coverage depends on enabled package sources and what they recognize

Choose a player that fits how you watch

VLC: the straightforward all-purpose option

VLC is the conventional starting point if you want one player for many file types and streaming protocols. VideoLAN describes it as a free, open-source, cross-platform multimedia player and framework that plays most multimedia files, discs, and various streaming protocols. Its Windows download page lists version 3.0.24 and says it runs on the latest version of Windows 11; check the page for the current release before downloading: VLC for Windows.

mpv: a leaner player for people who like control

mpv supports many video formats, codecs, and subtitle types, but it is not a conventional point-and-click alternative. The project’s stable manual says mpv has no official GUI beyond its on-screen controller, which is not intended to be a full interface. That makes it a better fit if you are comfortable with keyboard controls and configuration. The How-To Geek roundup recommends trying it for high-refresh-rate, UHD, or HDR playback; that is the article’s recommendation, not a performance result established by comparative testing. See the mpv stable manual before deciding whether its interface suits you.

Customize Windows selectively with Windhawk

Windhawk is an open-source customization platform for Windows 10 and 11. It offers community-created mods for areas such as the taskbar, File Explorer, and Start menu, letting you target a particular interface annoyance rather than replace the whole shell. The roundup describes enabling mods individually and disabling them to revert changes. Because these modifications interact with Windows components, review whether a mod remains compatible after a Windows update. Browse the project at Windhawk.

Use 7-Zip for archive work

7-Zip is the dedicated archive utility in this list, recommended as an alternative to Windows’ built-in archive experience. The roundup specifically mentions additional archive formats and AES-256 encryption, but those details are attributed here to that article rather than independently verified against a primary 7-Zip source. If a particular format or encryption option matters to you, confirm it in the current project documentation before relying on it.

Manage supported apps with UniGetUI

UniGetUI provides a graphical interface to package managers rather than acting as a universal updater. Its project repository lists WinGet, Scoop, and Chocolatey among the supported Windows package managers. The interface can help install, remove, and update applications available through configured sources, but it cannot guarantee that every installed program is detected or safely updated in one batch. Check which sources are enabled and review the apps and changes before applying updates. Project details are available in the UniGetUI repository.

Pick only the fixes you need

  • For a familiar general-purpose media player, start with VLC; choose mpv if a minimal, configurable player is more appealing than a full GUI.
  • For a specific taskbar, Start menu, or File Explorer change, look for a Windhawk mod that addresses that exact issue and keep Windows update compatibility in mind.
  • For archives, consider 7-Zip, checking current documentation for any format or encryption requirement that matters to your workflow.
  • For a graphical view of package-manager installs and updates, try UniGetUI after checking whether its supported sources cover the applications you use.

These are free software downloads; none requires buying a computer upgrade or accessory to address the problems described here.
