Apple lets you turn off Apple Intelligence features, but its Mac guide does not document a supported way to delete the models themselves. For that separate task, RemoveMacAI is an unofficial third-party app and command-line tool whose maintainer describes a preview-and-undo workflow for supported Macs. The storage recovered varies by Mac, and 12 GB or more is not guaranteed.
How much storage could Apple Intelligence use?
Check your Mac’s available space and the storage category shown in System Settings before deciding to remove anything. Do not assume the amount reported for another Mac is space your own Mac will recover.

- Up to 14 GB — Apple, 2026: Apple lists this as a requirement for certain recent supported devices.
- Up to 8 GB — Apple, 2026: Apple lists this for other supported devices.
- 12 GB or more — MacRumors, 2026: MacRumors reported that the models targeted by the utility can consume this much. It is not an Apple guarantee or a promised reclaim amount.
Apple’s figures describe storage requirements, while MacRumors’s figure is a report about the model assets. Neither establishes how much space a particular Mac will actually regain.
Turn off features or remove model assets?
These are different actions. Apple documents controls for turning off Apple Intelligence features; its Mac guide does not document a supported control for deleting the model assets. RemoveMacAI is a third-party project, not an Apple tool, and Apple does not endorse it in the cited documentation.

Apple Support’s Mac guide says: “You can turn off Apple Intelligence features like Siri AI (Beta),* summarization features, and more.” Its controls include Siri AI, Messages and Mail summaries, notification summaries, personalized Smart Replies, voicemail suggestions, and Journal writing prompts. What may stop working if you remove the models?
Disabling Apple Intelligence or removing its model assets can affect features that rely on them. The extent depends on which features and apps you use.

The following is the project maintainer’s described workflow, not an independently verified result. Proceed only if you intend to remove or block model assets and accept the feature tradeoffs.

- Confirm compatibility. Check that the Mac uses Apple silicon and runs a supported macOS 27 release. The README says macOS 26 and earlier are unsupported.
- Obtain the project from its official repository or release. The project provides a native app and a CLI. The maintainer says the app is not notarized; use the project’s documented installation method and review its security implications before opening it. The README describes a project-specific install path that checks a SHA-256 checksum.
- Review the preview before applying changes. The maintainer says the tool previews proposed changes. Inspect what it plans to change and proceed only if it matches your intention.
- Choose whether to apply or undo. The README says the selected changes can be applied or undone. Use the undo option if you change your mind, following the project’s instructions.
Use the official RemoveMacAI repository for its current release and instructions. Do not confuse it with the separate apple-intelligence-remover shell project; they are not the same tool.
When will Storage show the recovered space?
According to the RemoveMacAI maintainer, the asset-service request releases the models, but macOS removes the files on its own schedule. Storage settings may continue counting the assets until cleanup occurs and the display refreshes. The amount and timing of any recovered space are therefore device-dependent; do not treat 12 GB as a guaranteed result or judge completion only by an immediate Storage reading.
