To resize an image for Facebook, first choose where it will appear, then match that placement’s recommended dimensions or aspect ratio, adjust the crop, export, and preview it in Facebook on the intended device. There is no single size that fits every placement, and an ad specification should not be mistaken for a requirement for an ordinary post.
Choose a size by Facebook placement
Dimensions below are recommendations reported by third-party guides, not a single universal Facebook rule. Platform specifications can change, so check current Facebook guidance for the placement you are publishing to. The 2026 Businessman Talk guide reports figures it attributes to Meta; Canva and PhotoResizerr publish their own design guidance.

How to resize an image for Facebook
- Identify the placement. Decide whether the image is for a Page cover, profile picture, feed post, event, group, Story, link preview, or ad. Use the matching row above rather than selecting a preset just because it says “Facebook.”
- Choose a resizer. For a straightforward resize, use a tool that accepts custom pixel dimensions and lets you inspect or reposition the crop. A placement preset can save time, but it is a convenience—not proof that the dimensions are an official requirement.
- Set the aspect ratio before exporting. If your image’s shape differs from the target, crop it deliberately instead of stretching it. Keep faces, logos, and text inside the area that will remain visible.
- Adjust and preview the crop. For a Page cover, center important content and leave space around the edges; the 2026 guide reports that display crops differ between desktop and mobile and that a lower-left area may be overlapped. Check the result on a phone and desktop if possible.
- Export and upload. The 2026 guide reports JPG as Meta’s recommendation for Page covers and says PNG can be preferable when wording or logos matter. Treat this as reported guidance, not a universal format rule. Upload the image and inspect its appearance in Facebook.
- Correct a bad fit at the source. If Facebook cuts off important content or text looks misplaced, return to the original, reposition the crop, and export again. Do not assume the platform will preserve every part of the full canvas.
What makes a useful free Facebook image resizer?
- Custom dimensions: You can enter a width and height in pixels instead of being limited to presets.
- Crop control: You can move or scale the image within the target frame and see what will be cut off.
- Relevant presets: Placement labels can speed up setup, but confirm the dimensions and intended use yourself.
- Design features when needed: If you need text, templates, or a more involved layout, a design editor may suit you better than a basic resizer.
- Free-plan limits and privacy: Check current export, feature, and file-handling terms on the tool’s own site. PhotoResizerr says its processing happens on the device, but its privacy statement should be checked directly before relying on that claim. PhotoResizerr
Canva publishes Facebook size guidance and templates. Canva’s guide can help when you want a ready-made layout. Adobe Express is another option described in search coverage as offering custom resizing and free access, but its current feature and plan limits are not established here; check them on Adobe Express before choosing it.

Common sizing mistakes to avoid
- Using one dimension for every placement: A cover, profile image, Story, and feed image have different shapes and display behavior.
- Confusing organic posts with ads: The 4:5, 1,440 × 1,800 px figure is reported for feed image ads, not as a universal organic-post requirement.
- Stretching a mismatched image: Stretching distorts the subject. Crop to the target ratio instead.
- Putting essential details at the edge: Circular profile crops and device-specific cover crops can remove corners or edge content.
- Trusting a preset without previewing: A preset does not guarantee the live placement will show the whole composition.
