“How to get free Ethereum in MetaMask?” If you mean ETH you can spend on Ethereum mainnet, MetaMask’s faucet is not a source: it provides testnet ETH, which has no real-world value and cannot be transferred to mainnet. If you want tokens to try an app or transaction, MetaMask’s developer documentation points to faucets for Sepolia and Linea testnets.
What “free ETH” in MetaMask actually means
Testnets are separate blockchain networks used to try decentralized apps and smart contracts before release. Their tokens imitate the corresponding mainnet tokens for testing, but they are not real assets. How to get testnet ETH through MetaMask
- Choose the network for your test. MetaMask recommends Sepolia for application and dapp development. Its developer documentation also identifies Linea as a supported testnet for faucet use. Check the live MetaMask testnets guide and the linked “Use the Infura testnet faucet” instructions for the current process.
- Enable testnets if needed. In MetaMask, open the network selector and enable the option to show test networks. MetaMask says Sepolia is available by default once testnets are enabled. The specific labels or flow can change, so follow the current wallet interface and documentation.
- Use the faucet instructions for that network. Request test ETH only through the faucet route in MetaMask’s developer documentation, and follow its current eligibility and claim steps.
- Confirm the selected network before testing. Check the network shown in MetaMask and the dapp before submitting a transaction; testnet ETH works only on its respective test network and is not interchangeable with mainnet ETH.
The live documentation is the place to check whether claims are available and what requirements apply. The amount per claim, claim limits, identity requirements, and uptime are not established here, so do not assume a particular quantity or guaranteed access.

Which test network should you use?

MetaMask’s description of Sepolia and Holesky appears in its German-language testnet ETH guide. For dapp testing, Sepolia is the recommended choice; Holesky is aimed mainly at staking and infrastructure work.
How to recognize a fake “convert test ETH” offer
Be suspicious of anyone offering to exchange testnet ETH for an NFT, physical item, game asset, or other valuable property. MetaMask describes scams in which attackers claim test tokens can be converted into real value, sometimes using urgency or a supposed deadline to push a victim into acting. There is no legitimate conversion that turns testnet ETH into real ETH. MetaMask’s scam guidance

- Do not pay, trade a valuable asset, or connect your wallet because someone promises to “unlock” or cash out test ETH.
- Do not follow a link or conversion instruction from an unsolicited message.
- Never share your Secret Recovery Phrase. MetaMask says it will never ask you for it.
- Do not sign an unfamiliar transaction or token approval. An approval can give another party access to tokens.
What to do if a token or transaction looks suspicious
An unexpected airdropped token may display a message about a failed transaction and direct you to an outside site. MetaMask warns that such sites may try to steal a Secret Recovery Phrase or trick users into granting a token approval.
