The free DVD player to use on Windows 10 is VLC media player. VideoLAN, its developer, describes VLC as free and open source, lists DVD playback among its features, and publishes a Windows download page. Windows Media Player does not play DVDs by default, so you need VLC or another player with DVD support, plus an optical drive that can read the disc.
What you need before you start
- An optical drive. The computer needs a built-in DVD drive or an external USB DVD drive. Software cannot read a disc without one.
- A DVD in working condition. Scratches or dirt can stop playback even when the software is correct.
- Administrator rights on the PC. Installing VLC normally requires them.
- An internet connection for the download from VideoLAN’s official site.
Install VLC and play a DVD
- Open a browser and go to VideoLAN’s official website. Choose the Windows download option, not a third-party mirror, to avoid bundled software.
- Run the downloaded installer and accept the default options unless you have a reason to change them. The installer is listed at about 43 MB, but file size and version change with each release, so confirm the current figure on the download page before you install.
- Insert the DVD into the optical drive. If Windows AutoPlay offers an option, you can close it and open VLC directly.
- Open VLC from the Start menu. Select Media and then Open Disc…, or press Ctrl+D.
- In the Disc tab, confirm that the disc type is DVD and that the drive letter matches your optical drive. Select Play.
If the menu appears but the video stalls, check the disc for scratches and try a different drive letter in the Disc tab. Commercial discs with copy protection may not play in every setup; VideoLAN’s page supports VLC’s general disc playback, not every protected title.

Why Windows Media Player won’t play your DVD
Microsoft’s troubleshooting documentation states that DVD playback is not included in Windows Media Player. That is why a disc may appear to do nothing when you insert it, or why the player reports that it cannot play the disc. Installing a dedicated DVD-capable application is the practical fix.

Windows DVD Player: why you may see it mentioned
Older articles mention a Microsoft Windows DVD Player app. Microsoft’s 2017 support article described it as available free for a limited time to users upgrading from Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate, and from Windows 8 or 8.1 Pro with Media Center. The same article said a clean installation of Windows 10 was not eligible. Users upgrading from editions without Media Center could buy the app or another Store app instead. That offer is historical. Do not expect it to be available now, and do not assume it is free.

Do you need an external DVD drive?
Only if your computer has no optical drive. Many current laptops and small desktops omit one. An external USB DVD drive gives the computer a way to read discs, but the drive alone does not add playback software, so you still need VLC or another DVD-capable player. Check that the drive works in File Explorer under This PC before you blame the software.
Troubleshooting checks
- The disc does not appear in File Explorer. Confirm the drive is connected and powered, then try another disc. A damaged drive or disc will produce the same symptom.
- The disc appears but nothing plays. Open VLC first, then use Media, Open Disc, rather than relying on AutoPlay.
- Playback is choppy or the picture is poor. Clean the disc with a soft, lint-free cloth from the centre outward. A cleaning kit is optional and not required for ordinary playback.
Choosing a different free player
VLC is the option this guide supports directly, so it is the recommended starting point. If you compare it with another free player, check these points before installing:

- Whether the software is listed as free, with no paid unlock for DVD support.
- Whether it supports Windows 10 on the edition and build you run.
- Whether the installer includes unrelated bundled software.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft ended mainstream support for Windows 10 on 14 October 2025. Playing a DVD with VLC does not depend on the Windows version, but a computer that no longer receives security updates carries more risk when you install and open downloaded software. Check Windows Update and Microsoft’s lifecycle information for your edition.
