For a personal dashboard, shortlist CoinGecko Demo or CoinMarketCap for aggregated market data; choose Binance’s public market-data API only when you specifically want Binance prices and markets. Their free access is not interchangeable: compare endpoint access, call limits, freshness, history, attribution and usage terms before building around one. This guide reflects official provider documentation available in 2026; plan details can change.
Which free crypto API fits a personal dashboard?
Start by deciding whether your dashboard should show a market-wide view or prices from one exchange. CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap provide aggregated market information; Binance’s Spot API describes Binance venue markets. Mixing those figures without labeling their different scopes can make apparently conflicting prices look like equivalent measurements.

| Provider | Scope and useful data | Free access documented | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| CoinGecko | Aggregated crypto prices and market data, with current and historical routes described on its pricing page. | Demo lists 10,000 call credits per month and 100 calls per minute; attribution is required. CoinGecko pricing | Confirm endpoint availability, freshness, attribution display and whether the plan’s use terms suit your dashboard. Demo freshness is listed as starting from 60 seconds. |
| CoinMarketCap | Market listings, quotes, history/OHLCV, exchange and DEX data, and global metrics; its overview names watchlists and portfolio dashboards among use cases. | Selected keyless routes use a shared IP-based pool; the public keyless page does not state a fixed shared-pool quota. Its free-key route offers higher limits and broader catalog access. Official pricing information surfaced for Basic lists 15,000 monthly credits and 50 requests per minute; verify live terms. CoinMarketCap API overview | Check access and credit accounting for each endpoint, historical depth for the assets and exchanges you need, and keep keyed requests server-side. |
| Binance Spot API | Exchange-specific market data, including REST and WebSocket options. Public market-data-only REST calls use https://data-api.binance.vision. |
Public market-data endpoints are documented, but the reviewed documentation does not give one universal monthly free quota. Limits and request weights vary by product and endpoint. Binance Spot REST API | Choose it when Binance market data is the intended scope. Account for endpoint weights, rate limits and stream reconnect behavior. |
What to compare before committing
- Scope: Do you need an aggregate across markets, or specifically one exchange’s prices?
- Assets and quotes: Confirm that the endpoint covers your watchlist and the currencies in which you want to display prices.
- Data depth: Check current quotes versus historical chart or OHLCV needs, and whether the endpoint and history you need are available on the free route.
- Capacity and freshness: Compare monthly credits, per-minute limits and update intervals. A plan limit is not a promise of observed throughput.
- Terms and attribution: Review permitted use and required credit, especially if you may publish or commercialize the dashboard.
- Implementation: Consider whether you can protect a key in a backend and handle caching, rate limits and failures.
How to plan requests and avoid common failures
Estimate calls from the dashboard, not a headline quota
List the endpoints, symbols, pagination and refresh cadence you actually need. Estimate daily and monthly usage, accounting for requests that can bundle several assets. Credit systems may count returned data as well as raw requests: CoinMarketCap says credits are tied to data returned, not just request count. Its Basic figures of 15,000 monthly credits and 50 requests per minute are provider-published values surfaced in official pricing information accessed in 2026, and should be checked on the live pricing page before you rely on them.
Use stable identifiers where available
Symbols are convenient but can be ambiguous. CoinMarketCap recommends using a numeric asset ID where possible: CoinMarketCap ID guidance. This reduces the chance that a ticker collision or symbol change points a dashboard at the wrong asset.

Keep API keys out of browser code
CoinMarketCap blocks direct client-side browser requests to protect API keys and advises routing keyed requests through a backend or trusted server-side environment: CoinMarketCap authentication and security FAQ. Apply the same basic secret-handling rule to other keyed providers: do not put credentials in JavaScript delivered to users or in a public repository.
Cache, poll deliberately and handle limits
Poll only as often as your dashboard needs, cache responses where appropriate, and implement retry logic instead of repeatedly sending requests after a limit response. CoinMarketCap documents HTTP 429 for rate limits and recommends exponential backoff for its keyless endpoint: CoinMarketCap keyless API documentation. Binance warns that request weights and limits vary by endpoint and recommends monitoring and retry/backoff: Binance rate limits. For WebSocket feeds, account for reconnect handling rather than assuming a stream stays connected indefinitely.

Make the displayed data interpretable
Show the data provider and an update timestamp near the values. If you combine sources, label Binance values as exchange-specific and aggregated-provider values as market-wide data; do not silently merge them as if they came from the same calculation. These labels help readers understand both provenance and staleness.
When the free route is no longer enough
If your chosen endpoint, freshness, history, capacity or permitted-use terms do not fit, review that provider’s current paid plans before migrating. CoinGecko distinguishes plans by monthly credits, request limits, freshness and license; CoinMarketCap also offers paid tiers with differences in capacity, catalog access and historical coverage. Compare the live terms against the actual workload rather than assuming every paid tier solves every limitation. CoinGecko plan details · CoinMarketCap plan and API information
