The linked LinuxLinks roundup currently names seven tools, not ten. Of those, Kalzium has the strongest documented feature set for a desktop chemistry reference; gperiodic is a lightweight element browser, while several other entries are presented as terminal or command-line choices. The available descriptions do not support a complete feature-by-feature ranking of all seven.
How to choose a Linux periodic-table tool
Start with how you want to look things up. A command-line or terminal interface can suit quick access from a shell; a graphical reference is more appropriate when you want visual views or chemistry-learning features. Also distinguish a periodic-table browser from a molecular editor: they serve related but different tasks.

- For a broad desktop chemistry reference: Kalzium has the most detailed documented combination of element data, visualizations, and chemistry tools in the available sources.
- For a lightweight element browser: gperiodic is described in the Ubuntu Jammy manual as a small X/GTK application.
- For a terminal or command-line workflow: the LinuxLinks roundup identifies periodic-table-cli, P-Table, and element in those terms, but does not provide enough detail to compare their current capabilities.
- For molecule modeling: Avogadro is an adjacent chemistry application, not a periodic-table reference.
What the seven-tool list actually contains
The LinuxLinks page, dated April 22, 2026, lists seven names. Its brief descriptions are useful for discovery, but they do not establish current versions, licenses, installation routes, or detailed feature sets for most entries. Treat the distinctions below as descriptions reported by that roundup, not as independently verified rankings.
Recommended Free Tools
| Tool | What the cited description establishes | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Kalzium | Element reference and chemistry-learning application | Official KDE documentation gives the most detailed feature and installation information. |
| periodic-table-cli | Console application | Detailed features and current project status are not established by the roundup. |
| Nucleus | Element browser | Detailed features and current project status are not established by the roundup. |
| P-Table | Terminal user interface | Detailed features and current project status are not established by the roundup. |
| Periotable | Described as a modern app | The roundup does not establish its current release or installation options. |
| multiElement | Alternative periodic-table display | Detailed features and current project status are not established by the roundup. |
| element | Command-line program | Detailed features and current project status are not established by the roundup. |
Because the underlying descriptions are brief, there is not enough evidence to score or order the six less-documented entries by data depth, maintenance, or usability. Check each project’s own documentation before relying on it for a particular workflow.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Kalzium: the most fully documented desktop option
KDE describes Kalzium as an element-information and chemistry-learning program. Its element reference includes properties such as melting point, electron affinity, electronegativity, electron configuration, radii, mass, and ionization energy, along with isotope information. The handbook also describes tools for plotting element data and browsing a chemistry glossary.
Visual views and chemistry tools
Kalzium can present the table with colored views, including block separation, a simulation of the table by discovery year, and a temperature view. KDE’s handbook says users can inspect the state of matter at a selected temperature or view the table as it was known at a selected discovery date. The application also includes spectral-line visualization.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Its calculation and modeling features extend beyond element lookup: KDE documents a molecular-weight calculator, concentration, nuclear, gas, and titration calculations, equation balancing, and a 3D molecule editor. These functions make it a broader chemistry-learning application rather than only a static table.
Linux availability and release information
KDE lists Linux support and installation through Discover or other AppStream stores, a distribution package manager, or Flathub. The official page showed Kalzium 26.08.1, released September 10, 2026, as its newest listed release when checked October 7, 2026. KDE lists the license as GPL-2.0+. A package may not be available in every distribution repository, so check your distribution’s current catalog or use an installation channel linked from KDE’s application page: KDE Kalzium.

gperiodic: a lightweight browser documented for Ubuntu Jammy
The Ubuntu Jammy manual describes gperiodic 3.0.3-1 as a small X/GTK periodic-table program. It says the program lists 118 elements and supports lookup by element symbol or atomic number. It can color elements by phase at a temperature specified in kelvins. These details apply to the package and manual for Ubuntu Jammy; they should not be read as a current version claim for other Linux distributions. See the Ubuntu Jammy gperiodic manual for the documented behavior.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Avogadro is for molecules, not periodic-table browsing
Avogadro belongs on a chemistry software shortlist only if the need includes working with molecules. Its official project documentation describes a free, open-source molecular editor and visualization tool for Linux, macOS, and Windows, licensed under BSD 3-Clause. It supports 3D molecule editing and visualization, plugins, multiple chemical file formats, and output parsing for packages including GAMESS, Gaussian, Molden, MOPAC, NWChem, and ORCA. Those capabilities make it relevant to molecule-focused work, but it is not a substitute for a periodic-table browser. See the official Avogadro project site.
