Choose by what you want from Tumblr
Tumblr served both as a visual-discovery network and as a source of images. Wallpaper alternatives tend to specialize in one of three things: ready-made phone backgrounds, searchable image libraries, or browsing and collecting visual ideas.
For a wallpaper that is ready to use
Start with Vellum or Backdrops. Wallpaper-focused apps reduce the work of finding portrait compositions and previewing a background on a phone. Vellum’s official site lists daily curation and blur among its features; Backdrops is a fit for minimal and graphic styles. Neither replaces the social and community side of Tumblr.

For photographs
Use Unsplash or Pexels to search landscapes, nature, architecture, and other photography. These are general image libraries, so look for a portrait original with enough empty space for the clock and icons. Unsplash’s stated license is broader for ordinary use; Pexels has a specific restriction on standalone redistribution.
For discovery, fandom, or creator-led art
Pinterest is the closest match for collecting visual themes and searching niche aesthetics. Walli is a better starting point for artist-made illustration, while Zedge offers a wallpaper-centered catalog and other personalization content. Fandom, celebrity, game, and anime images often involve copyright or trademark rights; availability in an app does not establish permission to reuse them elsewhere.

For a particular look
- Nature and landscapes: Search Unsplash or Pexels, then choose a portrait crop or a photo with space above the subject.
- Minimal and abstract: Browse Backdrops or Vellum; try searches such as “black iPhone wallpaper,” “OLED wallpaper,” or “minimal dark wallpaper.”
- Illustration: Browse Walli, Vellum, or selected Zedge content, checking for premium locks and image rights.
- Fandom and pop culture: Pinterest and wallpaper communities can help you discover images, but trace a work to its creator and do not treat a repost as a license.
- Changing backgrounds: Save images to an album and use Apple’s Photo Shuffle, or consider a pattern generator if a current iPhone version is available.
- Matching iPhone and Apple Watch: Vellum’s site advertises matching wallpapers for both devices.
What to check before downloading
A good wallpaper app should make it easy to find the original image, save it without unnecessary steps, and preview how it sits behind the iPhone interface. Before committing to a service or image, check:
- Fit: Is it portrait-oriented and large enough for your display? Will the clock, widgets, Dynamic Island, or app icons cover the subject?
- Source: Is this the original upload or a compressed repost? Can you open a full-size version rather than saving a thumbnail?
- Access: Is the image free to download, or does it require an account, an ad, credits, or a premium upgrade?
- Save route: Does the app save to Photos, or does the browser put the file in Files?
- Rights: Does the service’s license cover your intended use, and are there separate rights in people, brands, logos, or artwork?
- Watermarks: If an image is watermarked, find a legitimate original or choose another image rather than removing the mark.
For a quick choice: pick Vellum or Backdrops for wallpaper-first browsing, Unsplash for photos and a stated broad license, and Pinterest when discovery matters more than a straightforward licensing path.

Download and set a wallpaper on iPhone
Save the image to Photos
- Open the image’s detail page in the service’s iPhone app or website, not just a thumbnail in a search grid.
- Tap the service’s Download or Save image option. In a browser, you may need to touch and hold the image and choose Save to Photos or Save Image from the menu.
- If iOS asks, allow Photos access. For Zedge, its iOS help page says Photos access is needed to save wallpapers to the photo album.
- Open Photos and confirm the image is there. If the browser downloaded a file instead, check Files. If the saved copy looks small, return to the image detail page and look for the original-size download.
Set it from Settings
- Open Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper.
- Tap Photos and choose your downloaded image.
- Adjust the crop and Lock Screen appearance in the preview.
- Tap Add.
- Choose Set as Wallpaper Pair to use the same image on both screens, or tap Customize Home Screen to choose a separate Home Screen treatment.
These are Apple’s current custom-photo steps. The Lock Screen offers a shortcut: wake the iPhone, touch and hold the Lock Screen, authenticate if asked, then tap the Add button to create a wallpaper or choose an existing one. Apple’s wallpaper gallery also lets you remove a wallpaper configuration by opening the gallery, swiping up on that wallpaper, and tapping the trash icon. Removing the configuration is different from deleting the image in Photos.
For a rotating background, Apple’s Photo Shuffle can use categories, a selected album, or photos chosen manually, with schedules including on tap, on lock, hourly, or daily. See Apple’s wallpaper instructions for the available choices.

Fix blurry, cropped, or missing wallpapers
If the image looks blurry
- Check whether you saved a thumbnail or preview; open the full image and use its largest available download.
- Prefer an original portrait photo. Enlarging a landscape image to fill a tall screen can soften it, especially if it has already been compressed or reposted.
- Preview the final crop in Apple’s wallpaper editor. An app preview may fit your screen differently from the file it saves.
If the crop hides the subject
- Choose a portrait image or one with generous space around the main subject.
- During setup, pinch to adjust the crop and keep the clock area clear. Leave room near the bottom for widgets and controls.
- Use separate Lock Screen and Home Screen treatments if the same composition does not work on both; a simpler or darker Home Screen can make app icons easier to see.
- If the image is too tight, use a legitimate editor to extend the background rather than enlarging the subject.
If it did not appear in Photos
- Check the app’s Photos permission in iPhone Settings, then try saving again.
- Use the iPhone share sheet and choose Save Image if the app’s save button fails.
- Look in Files if you downloaded through a browser; a file saved there is not automatically in Photos.
Are downloaded wallpapers legal to use?
A wallpaper being visible on Pinterest, Tumblr, Reddit, or a wallpaper app does not prove that the uploader owns it or has licensed it. Saving an image for your own phone is different from redistributing the file, selling a wallpaper pack, putting it in an app, or publishing it. If you intend to publish or sell an image, keep its source URL and check the image-specific license and any rights in depicted people, logos, brands, or artwork.

The Unsplash License allows free personal and commercial use, modification, and distribution without mandatory attribution. It does not permit compiling images to create a competing image service. The license also does not automatically clear separate rights in recognizable people, trademarks, logos, or artwork; see Unsplash’s terms and its guidance on brand logos in images.

Pexels
Pexels permits personal downloading, but its current terms and conditions prohibit distributing content on a standalone basis and explicitly include wallpapers as an example. Its API also cannot be used to build a wallpaper app whose main function is serving images for download, as explained in its wallpaper-app API guidance. Those restrictions matter especially to publishers, app builders, and sellers—not someone choosing a background for personal use.
Pinterest and Zedge
Pinterest is a discovery platform, not blanket permission to reuse each image it displays. Follow a pin to its original creator or source and check the rights there. Zedge’s iOS help page distinguishes free and Premium content, and says Premium content is licensed to Zedge by rights holders. That does not clear an image found elsewhere online or grant permission to redistribute a downloaded file.
What “free” means in wallpaper apps
Free access varies by service and by item. A library may let you browse without paying but reserve downloads for an account, show ads, ask you to watch an ad or use credits, or place some collections behind a premium purchase. Vellum advertises a free daily wallpaper and a one-time premium purchase for access to the previous four weeks of daily wallpapers; its current purchase amount is not stated. Zedge says its iOS app includes free content and Premium content, and some items may require an additional action. Its help page lists iOS 14 or later as the compatibility requirement, but app requirements can change.
Unsplash and Pexels present free consumer downloads, subject to their respective terms. For the simplest no-cost route to a personal photo wallpaper, choose a suitable image, save it, and use Apple’s built-in wallpaper editor; you do not need a separate wallpaper purchase to set an image you already have.
