If you need hosted screenshot review, compare Argos and Chromatic. But first check whether Happo’s free plan already covers your workload: it lists 5,000 snapshots per month in Chrome, with visual and accessibility testing.
Check whether Happo’s free plan is enough
Switching tools is not automatically an upgrade. Happo’s pricing page lists a free plan with 5,000 snapshots per month, Chrome, visual and accessibility testing, no credit card, and no time limit. A snapshot is one component variant rendered in one browser. Free accounts pause when they reach the monthly quota until the next cycle or an upgrade. These details are from Happo’s pricing page, accessed October 3, 2026; confirm current limits before choosing.

Happo’s Playwright integration uses existing tests to capture selected UI states and describes CI integration and browser coverage. That managed workflow differs from Playwright’s native approach, where your project keeps and maintains the reference screenshots. See Happo pricing and Happo’s Playwright integration.

| Option | Free allowance or model | Best fit | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playwright Test | Built-in screenshot assertions; no hosted-plan quota is specified here. You manage baseline files in the project. | Teams already running Playwright that want self-managed comparisons. | Baseline review and storage, repeatable CI environment, and browser/OS consistency. |
| Argos | Hobby: up to 5,000 screenshots. Pro: starts at $100/month with 35,000 screenshots included. | Teams that want hosted visual testing and a published free allowance. | Usage, required plan capabilities, hosted review needs, and cost beyond free capacity. |
| Chromatic | Free plan: 5,000 snapshots per month; testing and review pause at the cap until the next month or upgrade. | Teams whose framework and review process fit Chromatic’s cloud workflow. | Snapshot counting, integration and capture requirements, and the value of hosted review. |
| Happo | Free plan: 5,000 snapshots per month in Chrome, including visual and accessibility testing. | Teams that may not need to migrate. | Whether Chrome coverage and the quota meet your needs. |

Use Playwright when you want to own the baselines
Playwright Test provides the toHaveScreenshot() assertion. On its first run, the test runner generates reference screenshots; subsequent runs compare captures against them. Snapshot files are organized with the test and may include browser and platform identifiers. Review generated images before committing them, and treat baseline updates as code changes rather than automatic approvals.
Here is a minimal runnable example. Install Playwright Test and its Chromium browser with npm init playwright@latest if the project does not already have it, then save this as tests/homepage.spec.ts:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('homepage visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('http://127.0.0.1:3000');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('homepage.png');
});
Start the application at that URL, then create or update baselines deliberately:
Recommended Free Tools
npx playwright test tests/homepage.spec.ts --update-snapshots
npx playwright test tests/homepage.spec.ts
The first command writes the reference image; inspect the generated snapshot and commit it with the test. The second runs the comparison. Use your project’s configured web server and test command if it already has them. Consult Playwright’s screenshot assertion documentation for configuration, snapshot naming, and update behavior.
Keep captures comparable
A visual difference can come from a changed interface or a changed rendering environment. Playwright cautions: “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery vs. power adapter), headless mode, and other factors.” Use a repeatable CI image and browser version, control dynamic content such as timestamps and rotating promotions, and review diffs before updating baselines. Do not regenerate snapshots blindly to make a failing test pass.
Know the operational trade-off
Playwright avoids a separate hosted review service, but the team still owns baseline storage, CI execution, artifact review, and environment stability. A hosted service shifts some review workflow to a cloud interface; it does not remove the need to decide whether a UI change is intentional.
When Argos or Chromatic makes more sense
Choose Argos for a hosted workflow with stated upgrade pricing
Argos lists its Hobby plan at $0 for up to 5,000 screenshots and Pro starting at $100 per month with 35,000 screenshots included. Its pricing page also lists a different extra-screenshot rate for Storybook screenshots, so check the current terms and how your captures are counted before estimating cost. The listed prices were accessed October 3, 2026.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose Chromatic if its cloud review fits your integration
Chromatic documents 5,000 snapshots per month on its free plan. When the cap is reached, testing and review pause until the next month or an upgrade. Its Playwright setup documentation describes cloud snapshot capture and review; check the setup requirements for the project and framework before migrating.
See Chromatic’s Playwright setup documentation alongside its FAQ for the workflow details.

How to choose without wasting time on a migration
- Start with the framework: If the team already runs Playwright and can maintain snapshot files, try native assertions first. If you want hosted review, evaluate Argos or Chromatic.
- Decide who owns baselines: With Playwright, the reference images live in the project and require deliberate updates. With a hosted service, confirm how its capture and review process fits your approvals.
- Check rendering coverage: Compare the browsers and viewports your product needs with what each workflow supports. Happo’s free plan is specifically listed as Chrome-only.
- Estimate usage using the vendor’s unit: Happo counts a component variant in one browser as one snapshot; Argos lists screenshots; Chromatic lists snapshots. Do not assume those units map one-to-one for your test suite.
- Plan for the cap: Happo and Chromatic document pausing behavior at their free quota. Check each service’s current plan terms for what happens when you exceed its allowance.
- Account for the real workload: Include CI runtime, baseline maintenance, artifact review, and keeping renders stable—not just the software price.
ScreenshotNeo is for capturing pages, not replacing visual regression review
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a direct substitute for a component-baseline review workflow such as Playwright, Argos, or Chromatic. It is useful when the task is to capture a URL as an image or PDF: its clean-shot flow accepts consent banners and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP server tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
For page capture, one GET request returns an image or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo’s free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card.
