The Framework Laptop 13 Pro is easier to assemble than it may be to order. PCWorld’s July 27, 2026 review found the DIY build manageable, while describing a more complicated buying experience shaped by memory costs, changing shipment batches and order estimates. Framework’s September 29 pricing update later reported reduced pricing for limited new supply, so the July conditions are not the whole current picture.
What the Framework Laptop 13 Pro is
Announced on April 21, 2026, the Laptop 13 Pro is a redesigned 13-inch Framework laptop with Intel Core Ultra Series 3 processor options, a 74Wh battery, LPCAMM2 memory, a CNC aluminum chassis, a touch display and a haptic touchpad. Framework also offers an Ubuntu pre-load option. Its product page lists DIY and pre-built editions; the DIY edition leaves memory, storage and operating system to the buyer, while the pre-built edition can be configured with Ubuntu or Windows 11. Framework’s announcement and product page describe the design and editions.

The listed Intel processor options are Core Ultra 5 325, Ultra X7 358H and Ultra X9 388H. Framework’s specifications state that the Intel model supports up to 64GB of LPCAMM2 memory and NVMe SSD storage. Check the exact configuration page before ordering; those component choices and their prices can change. Framework’s specifications list the model options.
Is the DIY version hard to assemble?
PCWorld’s reviewer characterized assembly as approachable, including for relative novices. The process is largely connecting components, with no thermal-paste application step. Framework rates the assembly difficulty as moderate and estimates 10–20 minutes. That estimate describes the assembly, not the time needed to choose parts, set up an operating system or resolve an order delay. PCWorld’s July 27 review recounts the build; Framework’s specifications provide the manufacturer’s estimate.

The bigger DIY task is arriving with compatible parts and deciding how much setup you want to do yourself. Before checkout, make sure your configuration accounts for:
- Memory: The Intel model uses LPCAMM2, not a generic laptop RAM module. Select a compatible configuration or module based on Framework’s current specifications.
- Storage: DIY buyers supply an NVMe SSD; choose a drive confirmed to fit the model.
- Operating system: DIY buyers provide and install their own OS. If you prefer a ready-to-use system, compare the pre-built options and their listed OS.
DIY or pre-built: which should you choose?
The right choice depends on whether you value control over components more than convenience. Compare the live configured totals, not just the initial price shown in a headline or older review.
| Factor | DIY edition | Pre-built edition |
|---|---|---|
| Memory and storage | Buyer supplies memory and NVMe SSD storage. | Check the selected configuration on Framework’s current product page. |
| Operating system | Buyer supplies and installs an OS. | Framework lists Ubuntu or Windows 11 options. |
| Setup effort | Assemble the laptop, provide compatible parts and install an OS. | Less component and OS setup for the buyer; configuration and delivery still require attention. |
| Price to compare | Add the current laptop price to the cost of the required memory, SSD and any OS. | Compare the price of the chosen pre-built configuration, including its selected OS. |
Framework’s April 21, 2026 announcement listed launch starting prices of $1,199 for DIY and $1,499 for pre-built. Those are historical launch figures, not a current quote. The actual total depends on configuration and the live price at checkout. The announcement records those launch prices.

Why buying can be frustrating—and what changed
In its July 27 review, PCWorld described orders allocated to shipment batches, delayed batches and shifting expected dates. It also reported memory-price volatility and changes affecting some pre-order configurations. Those are conditions the reviewer encountered at that time, not a reliable promise about a new order’s shipment date or deposit terms today. Check the current order page and the terms shown for your own order.
Framework’s official pricing post, updated September 29, 2026, says the company secured additional LPCAMM2 and Core Ultra X9 supply at the prior shipment’s pricing, extended a price decrease to remaining Laptop 13 Pro pre-orders and lowered pricing for new pre-orders. Framework described the quantities as limited and said pricing on future new orders might rise if it could not source more memory at that price. This is a partial improvement, not a guarantee of stable pricing or immediate shipment. Framework’s pricing update gives the company’s account.
On July 22, Framework CEO Nirav Patel attributed a price change to a supplier cost update, saying it went “far beyond anything we had predicted and anything we’re able to absorb without placing our ability to operate at real financial risk.” That quote explains Framework’s stated rationale; it is not an independent confirmation of the supplier’s pricing. The official update contains the statement and subsequent changes.

Because both pricing and shipment estimates have been volatile, the practical check is the configuration and delivery estimate shown when you place the order. A dated review cannot establish today’s available stock, price or arrival window.

Framework advertises up to 20 hours of 4K Netflix streaming, 17 hours of active web use and 11 hours of video conferencing. These are Framework’s test results, not guaranteed runtimes for every configuration or workload. The company says it tested in April 2026 on an X7 358H model with Arc B390 graphics, a 2.8K touchscreen, 32GB memory and 1TB storage. For the Netflix result, its stated settings were Windows 11, 250-nit brightness, 60Hz refresh, 30% speaker volume, Dolby Atmos off, wireless on and Best Power Efficiency mode. Framework says results vary with use and configuration. Framework’s product page provides the figures and test conditions.
The 74Wh capacity is Framework’s stated battery specification. Separately, Ars Technica’s July 2026 review reports a substantial battery improvement over earlier Framework Laptop 13 generations. Its assessment is independent review evidence and should not be conflated with Framework’s controlled streaming, web-use and conferencing figures. Ars Technica’s review discusses its evaluation.

Repairability and upgrades: check parts individually
Framework says the Laptop 13 Pro chassis is compatible with every Framework Laptop 13 mainboard, including earlier generations, and lists replacement parts through its Marketplace. That does not mean every component swaps freely or every listed part is in stock. Ars Technica reports that some motherboards, displays and USB-C expansion cards are interchangeable, while the 74Wh battery, input cover with haptic trackpad and bottom case should be treated as a combined upgrade. The review also found some parts out of stock or not yet available when it checked. Confirm the exact part’s compatibility and present availability before planning an upgrade. Framework’s product page describes its parts offering; Ars Technica details component-specific compatibility.
Who it suits
The Laptop 13 Pro is a stronger fit for buyers who value repairability, configurable hardware and the option to assemble or upgrade a laptop, and who are comfortable checking compatibility and tracking an order. The pre-built edition reduces component and OS setup, but does not remove the need to compare the live price and shipment estimate. If you want a simple, fixed-price purchase with a dependable delivery date, the changing supply and configuration picture is a meaningful trade-off; the available dated reporting does not establish a universal delivery experience or buyer-satisfaction rate.
