Framework’s 2026 Laptop 12 refresh targets the convertible’s battery-life shortcoming with Intel Core Series 3, but the improvement is a company claim—not an independently verified result. Framework says its Core 5 320 configuration delivered up to 70% more battery life in a Netflix 4K streaming test than the original Laptop 12 with a Core i5-1334U. The update also adds Wi-Fi 7, Thunderbolt 4 on the rear expansion-card positions, and optional fingerprint and keyboard upgrades.
What changed in the 2026 Framework Laptop 12?
Announced on August 18, 2026, the refreshed Laptop 12 keeps the 12.2-inch convertible design and adds Intel Core Series 3 processor options: Core 3, Core 5, and Core 7. Framework founder and CEO Nirav Patel described the processor platform as “essentially a shrunk down version of the Core Ultra Series 3 platform we use on Framework Laptop 13 Pro.” That is Framework’s characterization, not an independent performance assessment. Framework’s announcement lays out the update.

- Wi-Fi 7 replaces the older wireless generation.
- The two rear Expansion Card positions support Thunderbolt 4; the front pair are USB 3.2 Gen 2.
- A fingerprint reader and backlit keyboard are optional input-cover upgrades.
- The 12.2-inch touchscreen remains 1920 × 1200 and supports USI 2.0 styluses.
Framework’s current product specifications list one upgradeable SO-DIMM memory slot, supporting up to 64GB, and modular M.2 2230 NVMe storage up to 2TB. The SSD form factor matters: a typical M.2 2280 drive is longer and should not be assumed to fit.

Framework claims up to 70% more Netflix 4K streaming battery life for the new Core 5 320 model than for the original Laptop 12 with Core i5-1334U. The company’s product-page footnote describes a July 2026 test with Intel Graphics, 16GB RAM, a WD SN5000S 512GB SSD, screen brightness at 150 nits, Wi-Fi enabled, Best Power Efficiency mode, and Netflix 4K video playback. Framework warns that real battery life can be lower and varies with configuration, use, software, operating conditions, and power settings. See the test qualification and product details.

This is a controlled streaming comparison, not a promise of 70% more runtime for every user. It does not establish how long the laptop lasts in mixed workloads such as web browsing, video calls, coding, or sustained CPU-heavy tasks. Nor does it show how the Core 3 and Core 7 configurations compare with the tested Core 5. No independent runtime measurements for the 2026 generation were established in the available coverage, so the battery claim should be treated as a manufacturer result pending independent testing.
What are the Core 3, Core 5, and Core 7 options like?
Framework offers three Core Series 3 choices, but the available announcement and specifications do not provide independent benchmark results for this laptop. A higher-tier processor may suit heavier workloads, but the evidence here is not enough to quantify performance, graphics gains, thermals, or fan noise between configurations. Choose based on the work you expect to do and the configuration’s current price—not an assumed performance uplift.

Framework says the new Core Series 3 mainboard, fingerprint reader, and backlit input cover can be installed in the original Laptop 12. That gives existing owners a potential upgrade path rather than requiring a complete replacement. The announcement does not establish the upgrade’s total cost or value; check current part availability and prices before deciding. Memory and the M.2 2230 SSD are also replaceable according to the official specifications.

Is the Laptop 12 a good fit for Linux?
Framework announced Fedora 44 KDE Plasma Desktop preinstalled on some configurations. That is distinct from choosing a DIY configuration and installing a distribution yourself. Framework says Core Series 3 and the BE213 Wi-Fi 7 radio require a Linux distribution with kernel 7.1 or newer; fingerprint support relies on libfprint. Check that your chosen distribution provides the required kernel and fingerprint support before buying if those features are essential.
Framework reported that around 80% of Laptop 12 owners use Linux across a range of distributions. That is company customer-research data, not an independently published survey, and it does not establish that every distribution supports every feature equally. Fedora Project Lead Jef Spaleta said Fedora KDE Plasma contributors aim to make that edition a strong KDE experience, while KDE e.V. president Aleix Pol noted work on touch and pen input. Those statements describe the software partners’ goals, not a substitute for checking support on a specific distribution.

BIOS and Windows driver availability
Framework’s support page listed BIOS 3.00 as the stable, latest Core Series 3 Laptop 12 BIOS and Windows Driver Bundle v1.00 on September 7, 2026. Support versions can change; consult the Framework BIOS and driver releases page for the current files and model-specific instructions before updating.
Verdict: a targeted refresh, with battery life still to be verified
The Core Series 3 Laptop 12 adds meaningful options on paper: a claimed streaming-runtime improvement, newer wireless and rear-port connectivity, optional fingerprint and backlit input hardware, and a stated mainboard upgrade path for original owners. Its modular memory and storage and USI 2.0 pen support remain relevant strengths for a compact convertible. The key caveat is the one that matters most to the refresh’s pitch: Framework’s 70% figure comes from a specific company-run Netflix test, and independent mixed-use battery, performance, thermal, and noise results are not established here.
