Four Things That Break When CI Posts to LinkedIn—and How to Prevent Them

CI can publish to LinkedIn, but token expiry, restricted read access, unsafe retries, and unexpected commentary rendering can turn a working job into a duplicate or failed post.

CI can publish to LinkedIn, but a successful first post does not make the workflow reliable. The main risks are expiring credentials, limited ability to read past posts, duplicate publishing after retries, and commentary that renders differently than intended. Design around those failure modes, and check LinkedIn’s current API version and app requirements before deploying: the required version header changes over time.

1. Access tokens expire, and renewal may be manual

LinkedIn documents a default access-token validity of 60 days. A workflow that stores a token as a CI secret therefore needs an owner and a renewal process; otherwise, the first sign of a problem may be a failed scheduled post.

Programmatic refresh tokens are not available to every app. LinkedIn limits them to approved Marketing Developer Platform partners, so a routine integration should not assume it can renew tokens automatically. Confirm eligibility before designing around refresh tokens.

Make expiry visible before a publish fails

  • Check token validity near the beginning of every workflow run, including runs with no content to publish.
  • Fail clearly if the token is expired or revoked, and alert an owner before the expected expiry date.
  • Check that the granted scopes match the workflow’s expected scopes, not just that the token is active.
  • If renewal is manual, document who performs it and how the updated secret is deployed.

Indie Core Dev’s 2026 article recommends treating a token with under fourteen days remaining as a warning. That is the author’s operational threshold, not a LinkedIn rule.

2. Posting permission does not guarantee read access

LinkedIn separates the permission to publish from the permission to read a member’s posts. Its Share on LinkedIn product provides the w_member_social scope for member posting. By contrast, r_member_social is restricted and available only to approved users. A workflow may be able to create a post without being allowed to inspect the member’s history for an existing one.

That makes read-back-based duplicate detection an unreliable assumption. If the app cannot read the account’s posts, it needs its own durable record of what it published. As Indie Core Dev puts it, “The only record of what you have posted is the one you keep.”

Keep a durable publication ledger

  • Assign each intended item a stable content identity, such as a repository and release identifier or a scheduled-content ID.
  • Before publishing, check the ledger for that identity and stop if it is already marked successful.
  • After a successful response, persist the returned post URN alongside the content identity and publication status.
  • Keep the ledger somewhere that survives ephemeral CI runners and can be read by later runs.

Do not treat an empty or inaccessible LinkedIn history as proof that a post was never made. The local record is what lets a workflow distinguish new work from a rerun.

3. Retrying a publish can create a duplicate

A publish request may succeed at LinkedIn even if the CI runner times out before it receives or records the response. If the job blindly retries, it can create another public post. A retry policy that is harmless for a read request can therefore be unsafe for publishing.

Make publishing state-aware: record the returned post URN after success, and consult the ledger before retrying. When the outcome is uncertain because the response was lost, do not immediately issue the same create request again; use the available record and a deliberate recovery procedure to resolve the state.

Indie Core Dev reports that its link-card content did not converge to a single post when rerun. That is the author’s finding for the workflow described, not a universal guarantee about every LinkedIn post type. Verify current update behavior for the specific post type rather than assuming a create request can be safely replayed or transformed into an update.

Use a deliberate trigger and a publish limit

  • Avoid publishing automatically on every push. Prefer an explicit schedule or release trigger, with human confirmation where practical.
  • Set a maximum number of new posts per run as an editorial safeguard. The one-post cap suggested by the author is a choice, not an established LinkedIn API limit.
  • Separate “request sent” from “publication confirmed” in workflow state so a timeout does not silently authorize a second create request.

4. Commentary can fail validation or render misleading links

Checking that a post’s source text looks right is not enough; validate the exact commentary string the API will receive. Indie Core Dev reports that reserved commentary characters require escaping and that strings shaped like domains may be autolinked even when the apparent domain is not real. These are author-reported formatting observations, so verify behavior against the current API and the content you plan to publish.

Before sending a request, inspect the final composed text for reserved characters and unexpected domain-shaped strings. Reject the publish when a check fails instead of silently altering content or posting a link that readers could mistake for a real destination.

Set up the app and keep API versions current

LinkedIn’s current developer setup and API behavior can change, so treat portal instructions and version headers as implementation details to verify when you configure or update the integration. Indie Core Dev describes associating an app with a LinkedIn Page, verifying it, enabling Share on LinkedIn for w_member_social, and enabling Sign In with LinkedIn using OpenID Connect when the workflow needs /v2/userinfo to obtain a member ID. LinkedIn’s documentation confirms Share on LinkedIn supplies the posting scope through the Developer Portal, but portal screens and requirements should be checked as they exist at setup time.

Mint a token with only the scopes the workflow needs, and store it as a protected CI secret. LinkedIn requires API requests to include Linkedin-Version in YYYYMM format and X-Restli-Protocol-Version: 2.0.0. Its Posts API documentation flags Marketing API version 202510 for sunset on ; consult LinkedIn’s supported-version list rather than copying a version header indefinitely.

The article also reports setup details including a 250-character minimum for a Page description and a logo at least 100 pixels wide. Those are author-reported requirements and may change; confirm the current Developer Portal criteria before preparing an app around them.

A safe CI publishing sequence

  1. Validate credentials: check token validity, expiry, and required scopes before doing publication work.
  2. Build and inspect content: compose the final commentary, then validate reserved characters and domain-shaped strings.
  3. Check publication state: look up the stable content identity in a durable ledger and stop if it is already published.
  4. Publish only on an intentional trigger: apply the workflow’s editorial cap and any required human approval.
  5. Persist success: save the returned post URN and confirmed status before the job exits.
  6. Handle uncertainty explicitly: if the request outcome is unknown, pause for recovery instead of blindly replaying the create call.

Which renewal and duplicate-detection approach fits?

Decision Approach Eligibility or requirement Operational trade-off
Token renewal Manual renewal Suitable when the app does not have confirmed programmatic refresh-token eligibility. Requires an owner, expiry monitoring, and updating the CI secret.
Token renewal Programmatic refresh LinkedIn documents availability for approved Marketing Developer Platform partners. Can reduce manual renewal work, but eligibility must be confirmed and expiry still needs monitoring.
Duplicate detection Read LinkedIn history Requires appropriate read access; r_member_social is restricted to approved users. Not a dependable design for apps that lack the permission.
Duplicate detection Local durable ledger Requires stable content identities and storage that persists across CI runs. Works without reading post history, but the workflow must reliably record successful post URNs.
