Before connecting four speakers, check three things: whether they are passive or powered, how many amplifier channels you have, and the speakers’ rated impedance versus the amplifier’s minimum supported impedance. For a common two-channel system with four identical 8-ohm passive speakers, connecting two speakers in parallel to each channel creates a 4-ohm load per channel; use that arrangement only if the amplifier manual permits 4-ohm operation.
Check the equipment before choosing a wiring layout
Start with the amplifier and speaker manuals, not a wiring diagram found online. Confirm the amplifier’s minimum supported impedance for the mode and number of channels you will use, then identify the nominal impedance of each speaker. A connection that falls below the amplifier’s stated minimum can put the equipment at risk. The permitted load is model-specific; do not assume every amplifier can drive 2 ohms or any other particular impedance.

- Passive speakers require an external power amplifier and speaker cable.
- Powered speakers contain their own amplifiers. They take a signal input and should be linked only through the output, thru, or link connections permitted by their manuals; do not treat them as passive loads on a power-amplifier output.
- Channels determine how the speakers can be grouped. In the common stereo setup, two speakers are assigned to the left channel and two to the right.
Yamaha Commercial Audio’s PA Beginners Guide: Amplifier illustrates the load calculation: two 8-ohm speakers in parallel present a total impedance of 4 ohms. That is an electrical example, not a guarantee that a particular amplifier supports the resulting load.

Choose series or parallel for two speakers on each channel
For four identical passive speakers in a two-channel stereo system, make one pair for the left channel and one for the right. Within each pair, the speakers can be wired in series or in parallel, but the resulting impedance and failure behavior differ.

For parallel wiring, connect both speakers’ positive terminals to the channel’s positive output and both negative terminals to its negative output. For series wiring, connect the amplifier’s positive output to the first speaker’s positive terminal, connect that speaker’s negative terminal to the second speaker’s positive terminal, then connect the second speaker’s negative terminal to the amplifier’s negative output. Follow the equipment’s terminal markings and manual.
In a parallel pair, each speaker is connected across the same amplifier output; in a series pair, the impedances add. These simple calculations assume matching nominal impedances. With speakers of different impedances, do not use the equal-speaker shortcut: check the actual network and the manufacturer’s allowed configurations. The amplifier’s behavior and the speakers’ sensitivity and placement also affect output, so the impedance calculation alone does not predict volume or sound quality.

Wire four 8-ohm passive speakers in a stereo system
- Confirm that all four speakers are passive, rated at 8 ohms, and suitable for the amplifier.
- Assign two speakers to the left channel and two to the right channel.
- Choose a wiring method for each pair. Parallel wiring gives a 4-ohm load per channel; series wiring gives a 16-ohm load per channel.
- Check the amplifier manual for the minimum supported impedance in the configuration you chose. Do not use the parallel layout unless the manual allows a 4-ohm load on each channel.
- Use dedicated speaker cable, match positive and negative terminals, and follow the connector instructions for both devices. Keep bare conductors from touching one another while connecting equipment.
Yamaha Commercial Audio’s guidance warns that three 8-ohm speakers in parallel produce an impedance of less than 3 ohms, which it says is unsafe for most power amplifiers. That example shows why adding speakers in parallel is not automatically safe; the particular amplifier’s rating remains decisive.

Powered speakers
Connect a powered speaker’s signal input as specified by its manual. If the model provides an output, thru, or link socket for another speaker, use it only as directed. A signal-link connection is not the same as placing passive speaker loads in parallel on an amplifier’s speaker output.

Passive PA speakers with link connectors
Some passive PA speakers provide parallel input and output connectors for linking a second compatible speaker. Linking does not remove the combined-load calculation: make sure the total load stays within the amplifier’s limits.
Many speakers across a commercial space
For distributed installations, a compatible 70- or 100-volt system may be more appropriate than a long chain of low-impedance speakers. This approach requires a compatible constant-voltage amplifier and transformer-equipped speakers, and the aggregate speaker power must remain within the amplifier’s output rating. Final checks before powering the system
- Verify the selected wiring layout against the amplifier’s manual for the exact operating mode and channel configuration.
- Check that the speaker cable and connectors are intended for the equipment, and that all positive and negative terminals are matched correctly.
- Inspect connections for loose strands or bare conductors touching each other.
- Make and change connections with the equipment off, following the product manuals’ instructions.
- If the speakers, amplifier rating, or wiring configuration are unclear, do not guess: consult the manuals or a qualified installer before connecting the system.
