Four Claude Developer Roles Reviewed One Expense App—Here’s What Each Found

A four-stage Claude experiment put one household expense tracker through build, debugging, accessibility and performance roles. Here’s what the reported passes found—and what they didn’t prove.

Giving Claude four focused engineering roles on the same household expense tracker surfaced different kinds of problems at each stage: the build pass created the app, then debugging, accessibility and performance reviews examined distinct risks. In Tom’s Guide’s account, later passes also caught issues that earlier ones missed. It is a useful example of structuring an AI-assisted review—not proof that the app was production-ready or that the results will generalize.

What the four-role experiment involved

Tom’s Guide reporter Amanda Caswell started with a household expense tracker meant to support adding and deleting expenses, assigning categories, filtering entries, calculating totals and displaying a category breakdown. She first asked Claude to act as a senior full-stack engineer, plan the architecture, data structure and user flow, and build a responsive Claude Artifact.

Caswell reports that the resulting React app included sample transactions, spending totals, a category breakdown, search, filtering, date sorting and persistence. The next three roles were review stages, each with a narrower objective.

Role Review objective What the account reports
Full-stack engineer Plan and build the app, including its architecture, data and user flow. A responsive tracker with sample data, totals, category breakdown, search, filtering, date sorting and persistence.
Debugging engineer Check behavior, input handling, data-loss risks, calculations, persistence and edge cases; identify issues and causes before fixing them. Reported problems included weak validation, a misleading empty-state category total, immediate deletion and storage errors shown only in the developer console.
Frontend engineer Review phone use, keyboard access, assistive technology, contrast, loading and error states, and destructive actions while preserving the app’s visual identity and functionality. Reported improvements included input labels, visible focus, screen-reader announcements, contrast, small-screen search behavior, descriptive icon-button names and deletion confirmation.
Performance engineer Examine rendering, calculations, sorting and filtering, storage and memory against a target of at least 10,000 transactions; measure before optimizing. The account describes a currency-formatting optimization and concludes that most performance work was unnecessary for the intended household workload.

These are the reporter’s descriptions of the prompts and outcomes, not findings from an independent code inspection. The original account is Amanda Caswell’s report for Tom’s Guide, published August 30, 2026.

What the debugging pass reportedly caught

The debugging role was asked to inspect functional behavior and explain root causes before attempting fixes. Caswell says it found that expense inputs were not in a proper form, date and amount validation needed work, and an empty tracker could incorrectly show Housing as its largest category. It also flagged immediate deletion, storage failures that appeared only in the developer console, and the absence of automated tests.

Those findings illustrate the value of asking for a diagnosis before a patch: a code change is easier to evaluate when the suspected failure and its cause are stated first. But a reported review is not the same evidence as a reproducible test suite. The account says no automated tests had been created.

Why a separate frontend review mattered

The frontend pass focused on how people interact with the tracker, not only whether its calculations worked. According to Caswell, it found missing visible keyboard focus, labels not connected to inputs, a search field relying on placeholder text, and validation messages that were not configured for screen-reader announcement. It also addressed contrast, search behavior on small screens, and accessible names for icon-only buttons.

This pass reportedly added a two-step confirmation before deletion. That is a meaningful example of role separation: the debugging review had identified immediate deletion, but the frontend review addressed the user-facing consequences of that destructive action.

The touch-target detail needs qualification

Caswell notes an inconsistency in the result: Claude described 44-by-44-pixel touch targets as a minimum, while the main delete control remained 36-by-36 pixels. The article says that control met the smaller WCAG 2.2 AA target but not the 44-pixel recommendation it cited. This comparison is reported by the article; it is not an independent accessibility audit.

What the performance numbers do—and do not—show

For a 10,000-row formatting task, Caswell reports that currency formatting took 349 milliseconds before an optimization and 5.2 milliseconds after reusing one formatter. The article characterizes that as a 67-fold improvement. These are timings from the described experiment, not general performance figures for Claude, React or other apps; the report does not provide benchmark code or enough setup detail for independent reproduction.

The ring binding also ensures that pages won't fall out, preventing the loss of vital information.

The performance role was also given a target of at least 10,000 transactions, but the household scenario discussed in the report was much smaller: 30 to 50 transactions per month. Claude reportedly concluded that the original app would probably handle a decade of that usage without noticeable difficulty. That is an estimate, not a measured ten-year test. The useful lesson is to define a workload and measure a baseline before optimizing; the reported results do not establish that every household tracker needs the same changes.

What this workflow can establish

The experiment supports a practical workflow: break a broad request such as “make this production-ready” into focused tasks, then judge each pass by the evidence it produces. A role prompt can direct attention toward a particular class of issue, but it cannot certify correctness, accessibility or production readiness.

  • Use the build pass to establish scope. Specify the app’s users, core actions, data and expected behavior.
  • Ask the debugging pass to diagnose before changing code. Request concrete failure cases and root causes, then test the fixes.
  • Give usability and accessibility their own review. Check keyboard use, labels, announcements, contrast, mobile behavior and destructive actions with suitable tests and assistive technology.
  • Make performance work conditional on a realistic workload. Record a baseline and optimize only where measurement shows a problem.
  • Verify each result independently. Review the code and run relevant functional, accessibility and performance checks rather than treating Claude’s role assignment as proof.

Caswell’s verdict was that “one enormous ‘make this production-ready’ prompt may not be the best approach.” The account also warns that multiple passes can run into Claude usage limits, without establishing a particular plan, price or allowance.
